El Loro Rewatched Carnival of Souls (1962). Very low budget independent film, a bit like a full length Twilight Zone story. Considering that it is low budget, it's not bad and at times quite eeries. As a piece of trivia the assistant director was Reza Badiyi. 6 years later he created the title sequence for the original Hawaii Five-O, a strong contender for the best title sequence in the history of television. Michael Powell last but one film to be released
El Loro I got a copy of the above DVD and watched The Boy who turned Yellow last night. Because it was made for children for them to watch at Saturday morning matinees for children it had little but curiosity value for adults. The writing and direction was competent as one would expect, the storyline eccentric, the acting varied from adequate to laughable, and the outfit worn by Nick was absurd though young children could find it amusing. I have yet to see The Monster of Highgate Ponds mentioned... [ more ]

The 'Greatest' film never made to be made
Former Member Barry Lyndon was a great historical romp... makes you wonder what Kubrick would have done with Napoleon. I like your summing up of AI - it was an odd film and didn't work. Wish Spielberg would hold back the sentimentality more often, like he did with Munich. [ more ]

The BFI top ten films
El Loro Since then I've now seen La Regle du jeu. It's a film to admire rather than like. There is a hunting scene in it where the shooting party are shooting at birds, squirrels etc and it is hard to watch as there is no doubt that these are being killed. It is a prolonged scene. Citizen Kane is admired by critics for its technical aspects rather than being liked. A lot of the credit should go to Gregg Toland for his cinematography. Orson Welles recognised that in the credits by having Toland's... [ more ]
Enthusiastic Contrafibularities I saw this list published and was pleased to say I know most and seen some of the films on the list. I do have a question mark over Citizen Kane. " Citizen Kane is regularly at the top of critics greatest films. It is an exceptional film but there is nothing to like about it. " I've seen it once and immediately thought, why do people rate this film. I have got to re-visit CK and do some additional reading, because I just don't see it. I've spoken with people who enjoy film and no one can... [ more ]

Ken Russell 1927-2011
El Loro Ken Russell's semi-dramatised documentary on Elgar made in 1962 for Monitor was one of the best things he made and is free of the excesses in much of his film work. There are slight hiccups at the beginning of some of these clips. the narration is by Huw Wheldon. [ more ]

Former Member It really scared me the first time I saw it and it still makes me jump now. Clowns are evil. The more recent(ish) films that preyed on my mind when I was trying to get to sleep would be the Japanese ones like The Grudge and the Ring - even the remakes are scary [ more ]

Books into Film .
Former Member The problem is not making books into films but doing it well. I often thought I would like to have a film production company which adapted books to the screen and did it properly. I understand El Loros points about the difficulty in translating the written word to film but what drives me mad is when they kill off characters or make up new ones and thereby completely change the story. I love Dean Koontz's books and think most of them would adapt very well to the big screen but every single... [ more ]

El Loro The problem with choosing a book to make into a film is that they are very different forms of media. A book lets you visualise the story as you read it whereas a film visualises the story for you. Compare two of the greatest Brisitsh directors of all time - David Lean and Michael Powell. I rate Powell ahead of Lean as whereas Lean generally adapted existing books, Powell tended towards material written for the film (normally using Emeric Pressburger). Also if you adapted even a short book... [ more ]

Elizabeth Taylor has died
brisket In a tribute to hear on BBC News there was a rather interesting revelation. Elizabeth Taylor said that she gave a lot of credit to Montgomery Clift for creating within her a moment of change in her approach to acting. She had said that she had hitherto subconsciously thought that you play the part of a character, but that Montgomery Clift had impressed upon her that you actually have to 'inhabit' that character - become that character. In an interview she gave much credit for that learning ... [ more ]

El Loro I'm pleased to see that you appreciate A Canterbury Tale as much as I do as, superificially, it can seem a silly storyline, but when you think about it, there is much more to the film than that. I know you are not a fan of 2001, but I wondered if you had ever seen it at the cinema or just on a television screen. El Loro The BBFC has today announced that the distributors have chosen (not been instructed by the BBFC) to release the film in a shortened version, by omitting the 7th reel of what would be a 9 reel film. The distributors have also indicated that the film shoul be projected at 25 frames per second instead of the normal 24 frames. I think that the reel consistes mainly of hallucinatory images. The 25 frames per second means that the film will play at the same speed as an ordinary DVD. The BBFC text... [ more ]

The most censored film in recent years
El Loro Reference: jackassfan but some of the sick stuff like the baby rape scene has stopped me from watching it The BBFC has now provided its extended classification information, and they confirm as I expected that this scene has been fully cut leaving just the sounds of the baby crying and the reactions on the faces of the onlookers. The BBC was one body asked to consider taking a lead role in distributing lottery money to film projects.
