Big Brother gets new series order in Germany
14/09/09

RTL2 has ordered another season of Endemol's reality show Big Brother, taking it into its tenth season in Germany. The free-to-air broadcaster will air the show daily, in primetime.

The ninth series of the show finished in December on RTL2 and performed well for the free-to-air broadcaster with a peak audience over 40% above its average share.

Endemol announced last week that US network CBS had commissioned a twelfth series of Big Brother and will be cheered by the German deal after the UK broadcaster of the show, Channel 4, announced it would not be ordering any more after its current deal expires next year.

Endemol is also keen to flag the current success of the show in Italy and Spain.

In Italy Grande Fratello is enjoying its best ratings for three years, generating a 29.2% share for Canale 5. In Spain Gran Hermano launched this month with a 25.3% share, well above the average for its local broadcaster Telecinco.

X Factor winner 'could flop', warns Cowell

Simon Cowell has issued a stark warning to this year's The X Factor hopefuls, saying that even winning the show doesn't guarantee a successful career.

Speaking to The Sun, the mogul said that anyone who does win the series only has a one in two chance of achieving long-term chart success.

"We can't guarantee that they will be an international star," Cowell said. "There is a 50/50 chance that they are going to make it. Sometimes it doesn't work.

"The music business is hard. Trying to find a star with long-term appeal is not an easy job. But they will have a better chance of being a star after appearing on this show."

The show has of course had its success stories - Leona Lewis has become a huge star around the world while last year's winner Alexandra Burke is also tipped for global fame having signed a five-album deal in the US worth around £3m.

Burke has also been working with several renowned US producers and performers on her debut album, set for release in October.

However two of the five series winners so far - Steve Brookstein and Leon Jackson - flopped, while series two winner Shayne Ward has been only moderately successful in the charts.

"We don't always get it right" Cowell admitted.

"People can give an amazing performance on the show but then they can't get the whole career thing right. It's disappointing but it's out of our hands - it comes down to the public whether or not they like them after the show.

"But I'm 100 per cent committed to the artists."

X Factor reject is online hit

Demi Cullen with X Factor judge Cheryl Cole at the Birmingham auditions

X Factor reject Demi Cullen today said she would never forget the moment she was comforted on stage by judge Cheryl Cole.

The emotional scenes have become an internet hit after being broadcast on the ITV show.

Demi, aged 17, from Walsall, became upset when her hopes of stardom ended as her performance of a Whitney Houston classic was described as “just not good enough”.

But in a rare moment of compassion from the X Factor panel, all four judges, including Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh and Danny Minogue praised the student’s bubbly personality.

And Girls Aloud star Cheryl then ran on to the stage to offer her a hug.

Speaking on GMTV this morning, Demi said: “Cheryl was really lovely to me and told me she liked me and she would have put me through.”

Demi has now become an internet hit on Facebook and YouTube.

She has also been asked if she would be available to switch on this year’s Christmas lights in Walsall.

'Strictly' Bruno: 'I love Alesha'
Monday, September 14 2009, 06:30 BST
By Catriona Wightman

Strictly Come Dancing judge Bruno Tonioli has said that Alesha Dixon will bring "energy" to the show.

The People reports that Tonioli avoided talking about former judge Arlene Phillips by praising Dixon.

"I loved Alesha when she competed," he said. "She's so bubbly and she'll bring energy that hopefully I can use too.

"She just needs to be herself. You can't try to be somebody else on Strictly. The public may or may not agree with you, but they have their say by picking up the phone."

Tonioli added that he was looking forward to the series, especially because Footballers' Wives stars Zoe Lucker and Laila Rouass are contestants this year.

"I'm looking forward to the battle of the bitches," he said. "I really hope they will be as feisty and bitchy as they were on Footballers' Wives."

The new series of Strictly Come Dancing begins on Friday at 8.30pm on BBC One.

Will you watch The X Factor or Strictly Come Dancing?
By Ben Wright

Strictly Come Dancing's latest line-up of celebs will make their debut on Friday night, before going head to head with The X Factor on Saturday

X Factor judges Walsh, Minogue, Cole and Cowell

THE BBC launches its big gun this week as the seventh series of Strictly Come Dancing appears on our screens.
It will, no doubt, herald a Saturday night ratings war, as it is pitched directly opposite ITV's The X Factor.

Simon Cowell, Dannii Minogue, Cheryl Cole and Louis Walsh already have a head start after their sixth series began on ITV on August 22.

However, will Bruce Forsyth, Tess Daly and their cast of celebrity dancers manage to sweep them away?

Since the first show in 2004, Strictly Come Dancing has increased in popularity every year. The finals of the fourth and fifth series in December 2006 and 2007 each attracted audiences of more than 12 million viewers, and the 2008 final topped that with an excess of 13 million viewers.

This year they will be hoping to top that with a line-up of 16 celebrity wannabe dancers, including Natalie Cassidy and Ricky Groves, better known as Sonia and Gary from EastEnders.

Meanwhile, from the world of sport there is former cricketer Phil Tufnell, Grand Slam tennis winner Martina Hingis and Joe Calzaghe, the former world boxing champ from Wales.

Bruce and Tess return with their team of judges, Craig Revel Horwood, Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli along with glam newcomer (and series five winner) Alesha Dixon.

The X Factor, sometimes described as Britain's biggest talent show, has changed format and replaced behind the scenes auditions in front of the panel of judges with the hopeful contestants trying for a stab at fame in front of a live audience.

So who will be the winners? The celebs attempting to kickstart their careers or the ordinary Joes desperate for celebrity, no matter how fleeting?

X Factor hopeful already successful actor and singer

It has been revealed that an X Factor contestant put through to Bootcamp on Saturday’s show is already a successful actor and singer. Find out who it is here.

14 September 2009 11:59 AMComment

Heshima Thompson was one of the acts out through to Bootcamp after his performance on Saturday night’s X Factor impressed the judges.

But is has been revealed the show hopeful is already a successful actor and singer who has appeared in a string of big name shows and sung with one of the world’s leading performers.

According to reports, Heshima was a backing singer for Amy Winehouse and his TV credits including Spooks: Code 9, The Bill, Judge John Deed and Prime Suspect.

He is also said to be releasing his solo album in 2010. Either Heshima is extremely confident of X Factor success or he already has plans out-with the show.

His performance of The Script's Breakeven certainly impressed the judges and he said he wanted to end the’ female domination on the show.’ A comment which delighted Simon Cowell who has already spoken out about his desire for a male winner this year,

Louis Walsh told Heshima: "We think you have more potential than you even think you have."

We have a funny feeling Heshima already knows he has talent Louis. Amy Winehouse certainly does!

Minogue mocks joint wedding rumours
Monday, September 14 2009, 13:00 BST
By Daniel Kilkelly, Entertainment Reporter

Dannii Minogue has laughed off claims that she is planning a double wedding with sister Kylie.

Last week, it was suggested that Dannii would marry rugby player Kris Smith and Kylie would tie the knot with model Andres Velencoso in a shared ceremony.

Speaking to The Mirror in response to the rumours, the X Factor judge joked: "Yes, it's all true. However, we haven't decided if it will be incorporated into an episode of Neighbours or if we'll do it on a stage in Las Vegas with an Elvis impersonator."

She added: "Either way, Jean Paul Gaultier is doing the dresses."

Dannii's ongoing romance with Smith has resulted in several engagement reports in recent months.

Kate Walsh demands pre-nup

'The Apprentice' star Kate Walsh is refusing to marry fiance Philip Taylor, who she met on the show, unless he signs a pre-nuptial agreement, as she is determined to protect her wealth.

14 September 2009 12:00 PM

Kate Walsh is demanding her fiance signs a pre-nuptial agreement.

'The Apprentice' star is determined to protect her fortune before marrying Philip Taylor - who she met while filming the BBC reality TV show - and will not walk down the aisle until he has consented to the document.

She said: "I'm a businesswoman and it's all about looking after number one sometimes. I've been burnt in previous relationships.

"I know it's sad. I've had that conversation with Philip. This is the reason I want a pre-nup. He knows I'm not a born romantic, unfortunately."

Kate is said to be worried as she has carved out a successful TV career since appearing on the show - her new programme 'Live From Studio Five' kicks off on Five tonight (14.09.09) - while Philip is unemployed.

Philip said: "I'm not doing anything at the moment. I am supporting Kate doing her TV thing."

Kate is presenting the new show alongside former glamour model Melinda Messenger and ex-footballer Ian Wright.

She told website Digitalspy: "The best way I can describe it, is it's like when you're down the pub with your mates having a bit of banter about whatever's been in the news that day."

Kate is not the only TV presenter to start a new job today.

Today also marks Holly Willoughby's first appearance on ITV daytime show 'This Morning', which she now presents with Phillip Schofield.

Speaking ahead of the show, she said: "I will definitely be nervous. I've been presenting for ten years now and I still get nervous before a show or anything I do.

"This is such a big thing for me. I've been such a fan of the show for a very, long time. It was one of those things that as a kid, if you had a sick day from school you could sit on the sofa and watch 'This Morning'."

Meanwhile, Phillip has revealed he struggled to cope when his former co-host Fern Britton appeared on the show for the final time earlier this year.

He said: "As we got nearer to the end of the show, the atmosphere was getting more and more emotional. When Fern said 'bye to me on the telly I lost it a bit because it was such a momentous occasion for us."

Michael Jackson’s brother Jermaine will also feature on the show. The performer will discuss the forthcoming Michael Jackson tribute concert, and his thoughts on the investigation into his brother’s death.

In a pre-recorded interview, when asked about the amount of drugs Michael was allegedly taking, Jackson said he never saw Michael “act in any way that was out of the ordinary”.

Live From Studio Five will be broadcast at 6.30pm on Five.

Strictly Come Dancing: Stars' mouths not so strictly shut
Sep 14 2009 By Albertina Lloyd

So Strictly Come Dancing is back! The glitzy show returns to BBC One on Friday September 18, and we catch up with the contestants and dancers to give the latest gossip from inside the show.

All the celebrities taking part this year had been thoroughly briefed on just what they should say about her departure from the judging panel.

But the instructions perhaps hadn't been strict enough for Phil Tufnell.

"What was it we were told to say about Arlene again?" the slightly bleary eyed former cricketer - fresh from celebrating England's Ashes victory - asks the BBC publicist looming at his shoulder.

Then he repeats parrot fashion, like most of the other contestants, "Oh yeah, she is still part of the show. Everything has to change, the changes are for the best."

Actress Lynda Bellingham, 61, is a little more vocal on the supposed ageism issue - and Arlene's replacement by Alesha Dixon, some 30 years her junior.

"Age is a number, it's a cliché [that] the only thing you've got to be aware of as you get older, is if you let it all go", declares Lynda.

"She's still in the show, if it was about ageism she wouldn't be in the show and if they weren't speaking to each other she wouldn't be in the show and I think as far as Alesha goes - she's innocent until proven guilty - give the girl a chance. It's a show it's about entertainment, it's not real life."

Dancer Anton Du Beke and his partner this year, Footballer's Wives star Laila Rouass take a more humorous approach to skirting round the issue - suggesting new judge Alesha Dixon will side with her former partner Matthew Cutler when it comes to scoring.

"It's good having Alesha as a judge, 'cause she can look at it from my side, she knows what I'm going through", says Laila. "But the only thing is she danced with Matthew - so she better not be on his side."

"I reckon Alesha is completely biased!" declares Anton. "She'll swing it towards Matthew every time. They love each other. Matthew comes out and she'll give him ten without waiting for him to dance!"

But dancer Flavia Cacace feels having a former Strictly winner on the judging panel could be to her and partner Craig Kelly's advantage.

"I hope Alesha will be able to relate to the celebrities and how they're feeling", she says.
"I think that's nice because she can understand a little bit more how they're thinking so it might be a nice twist.

"I think Arlene will be missed but Strictly evolves like anything and she'll still be part of the show."

So with the Arlene issue swept off the dance floor and under the carpet, it's down to the other question no one usually wants to give an honest answer to - who wants to win?
But EastEnders Natalie Cassidy, teamed up with feisty Vincent Simone, is upfront.

"I'm here to win! You can't not want to win with Vincent as your partner", she laughs.
And Russian dancer Kristina Rihanoff - who last year had "tranquillised rhinoceros" John Sergeant as her partner - is delighted to be taking to the floor with light-on-his-feet boxing champ Joe Calzaghe.

"I wanted an athlete for the show and Joe is really great because he's so focused," she says.
"He's a very different partner, but they have something in common that they both want to do well on the show and John, bless his heart, he tried his best, but obviously now I have an athlete - my dream came true."

And Kristina needn't worry as Joe is full of fighting spirit.
"Of course I want to do well - I'm a competitor, I'm a winner. I want to win!" he says.

"If there's one thing I'm dreading it's messing up," he also confesses.
"The fear of being on the live shows in front of millions of people and losing your pose or treading on her toes."

This year sees an unprecedented 16 couples take each other on in the sequin-spattered series which runs until Christmas.

While Laila Rouass and her Footballer's Wives co-star Zoe Lucker were famous for trying to literally kill each other in the ITV drama, she insists they'll be cheering each other on during the dance show, despite being competitors.

Laila insists: "There's no rivalry between me and Zoe - I was so surprised to see her and so happy. We can be nervous together."

And Zoe agrees: "Do you know when she walked in today, I was absolutely thrilled. We're in the same boat, I'm sure she's a much better dancer than I am, but she's great fun.

"She's very warm - she's going to be a great support - we're just going to have to look after each other. The more time we spend together the less intimidating it will be."

Oxo Mum Lynda believes it's the luvvie side of being an actress that is getting in the way of her competitive streak.

"I'm not a very competitive person I have to tell you," she confesses.

"I'm used to, as an actor, being in a kind of team effort. Contrary to what people think about actresses all bitching and hating each other, mostly we are a very team-forming group of people, but on the other hand who knows - if I start to race ahead..."

And Hollyoaks hunk Ricky Whittle vows: "If I get to the final I'll dance in a thong."
The sequins and Lycra are a source of great amusement for the men.

"I've already tried on my leather-studded jock strap", jokes EastEnders Ricky Groves. "It's all part of the glamour and the glitz isn't it really?"

But for some of the women taking part in Strictly is like a fairytale dream come true.
"The frocks are amazing - I had some fittings and I actually cried," Natalie Cassidy reveals.
"They're just beautiful and they're very daring and like a princess. It's every girl's dream, I think."

There is a lot of training to do before anyone can really start to imagine holding that glitter ball trophy above their heads and a lot of the contestants aren't quite sure what they've let themselves in for.

Craig confesses: "We haven't started training - I really don't know if I can dance, but I'd be lying to say I wasn't competitive.

"Flavia's got to push me, squeeze it out of me. But she's got a willing pupil. I want to do well. The fear of looking like a total idiot is enough to get you focused."

And Tennis ace Martina Hingis reveals: "I'm worried about stepping on my dress!
"Training is going OK - baby steps you know. Once I had just the socks on it was light and then you put your real dancing shoes on and I can hardly even walk straight."

But some of the contestants seem to think their celebrity lifestyle of living it up on the dance floor at top night spots should be a good grounding.

Jo Wood, 53, reveals: "I go to nightclubs and dance quite often. I've got no dancing background except I did waltz one year at school, one term but that was with another girl 'cause I was at a girls' school."

Jo's dance partner Brendan Cole - known for being very strict in rehearsals - says: "She goes out to Mahiki until 3am in the morning - none of my partners have done that before."

Jo laughs: "Brendan is the only thing I'm not dreading because I like Brendan. He's the bad boy of ballroom, you see."

It's time for the contestants to get down to some serious moving and shaking - never mind stiff competition, it's going to be stiff backs and aching feet from now on.

And it looks like there won't be anybody reading newspapers in rehearsals and stomping around the dancefloor making a mockery of the show this year.

Or will there?
Phil Tufnell lets slip: "I think the main thing is about enjoying it, keep a smile on my face.
"You don't want it to become like a burden or get so nervous you're in the toilet throwing up - I want to be enjoying myself."

Extra time - Strictly Come Dancing
Badboy of ballroom Brendan Cole was engaged to professional dance partner Camilla Dallerup when the first series of Strictly began, but their relationship ended over his affair with his celebrity dance partner, newsreader Natasha Kaplinsky. Their sizzling chemistry clearly helped them on the dance floor as they won the series and claimed the first glitter ball trophy.

Professional partners Flavia Cacace and Vincent Simone used to be an item off the dance floor, but they split in series five when Flavia fell for her celebrity partner, ex-EastEnder Matt Di Angelo.

Matt and Flavia's chemistry helped them get to the final but they were beaten by singer Alesha Dixon and her partner Matthew Cutler. Alesha is now to sit on the Strictly judging panel herself.

Ex-political journalist John Sergeant made headlines last year after viewers voted to keep him in week after week, despite his terrible dancing. He and partner Kristina Rihanoff played on his lack of skill by making their dances humorous, but critics and the judges believed he was making a mockery out of the dance competition. He eventually withdrew in Week 10.
This year's contestants Hollyoaks' Ricky Whittle and athlete Jade Johnson have a Strictly advantage. Ricky danced a group dance with the Hollyoaks cast to Footloose on BBC's Let's Dance for Comic Relief earlier this year and Jade danced the Cha Cha Cha with Roger Black last year for Sport Relief does Strictly Come Dancing.

Guess which Big Brother star has also ditched the blonde...
Posted by heatworld on Monday 14 Sep 2009

There must be something in the expensive bottled water that famous types drink this weekend, because yet another "star" has gone over to the dark side. Agyness Deyn was the first brave lady to ditch the bleach, and now Big Brother housemate Karly has followed suit. It's not the first time Karly's been a brunette, but to be honest we're surprised she's ditched her attention-grabbing colour in the midst of her five minutes. Saying that, it does look rather synthetic, doesn't it? Maybe she's just wearing a wig. Do you think Karly looks better with dark locks, or are you a fan of the blonde?

Ant & Dec: "Reality TV is here to stay"
Monday, September 14 2009, 15:01 BST
By Daniel Kilkelly, Entertainment Reporter

Ant and Dec have insisted that reality TV has a bright future despite the downfall of Big Brother.

Critics have suggested that Channel 4's decision to axe the long-running show after next year's series marks an end of the genre's golden age.

Reflecting on the programme's fate, Ant told the Daily Star: "It changed TV, like Pop Idol. But reality TV is here to stay. People who want to kill it off are going to be disappointed. It's not the root of all evil."

The pair also agreed that they enjoy the opportunity to travel around the country for Britain's Got Talent auditions each year.

Dec explained: "You can get so insular staying in London, thinking this is the centre of the universe, and it really isn't. It's so interesting to go out and meet people."

Big Brother may continue on another network after the 2010 series, though no deals have yet been announced and a number of broadcasters have ruled out bidding for the programme.

Groves excited over 'Strictly' costumes

Former EastEnders star Ricky Groves has vowed to get into the spirit of Strictly Come Dancing by experimenting with his wardrobe on the show.

The 41-year-old actor, who played Garry Hobbs on the BBC One soap, revealed that he is keen to wear a wide variety of outfits as he dances with professional partner Erin Boag in the weeks ahead.

Speaking to the Sunday Sun, he commented: "I'm looking forward to experimenting with all sorts of costumes as the weeks go on.

"I will possibly indulge myself with a tan or two, but do warn me if I start turning into David Dickinson."

Groves made his final appearance in Walford last month after nearly nine years on the series.

Strictly Come Dancing kicks off on Friday night on BBC One.

HOLLY TAKES HER SEAT ON THIS MORNING'S SOFA

DEBUT: Holly Willoughby on the sofa for the first time today (ITV/PA Wire)

Monday September 14,2009
By Emily Garnham for express.co.uk

HOLLY Willoughby today revealed how nerves kicked in ahead of the first day in her dream job, as she made her debut appearance on This Morning's famous sofa.

The new face of ITV's flagship daytime show looked relaxed as she chatted merrily with co-host Phillip Schofield, showing off her curves in a flattering cream dress with capped sleeves.

The former Dancing On Ice presenter - who recently gave birth to her first child, a son called Harry - said her famously revealing gowns had been haunting her in anxiety dreams as she geared up replace Fern Britton.

The 28-year-old, who caused a sensation by wearing a white gown with a plunging neckline on the celebrity ice-skating show last year, said: “I dreamt the first item on the show today was a dress comparison, where I had to bring in the dress from Dancing On Ice and wear it again.

“It was a ’before and after’ breastfeeding comparison, so everybody was just staring at [my bust] area, saying ’They’re not like that any more now she’s had Harry’, and I was thinking ’I don’t want this job any more’.”

FEARS: The blonde said she had anxiety dreams in the run-up to today

Holly told Phillip: "It was like Christmas eve for me last night - that kind of brilliant excitement where you just can't sleep."

Sofa guest DJ Chris Moyles said: "Holly, you are doing a marvellous job and you look gorgeous."

Former presenters Richard and Judy also passed on a message, which read: "What a fantastic start! Have great fun and enjoy - we did! Lots of love, Richard and Judy."

This Morning's phone-in room received hundreds of message and emails congratulating the bubbly presenter and wishing her well in her new job.

Viewer Donna Williams said: "I never thought it would be possible to replace Fern BUT you have succeeded! My days off will now be filled with the lovely Holly and the silver fox."

The star landed the job after Fern Britton announced she was leaving in March after 10 years on the sofa, saying she wanted to work on other projects and spend more time in her garden.

Her last show came on her 52nd birthday in July, when former presenters and guests appeared to bid her farewell, including former co-host John Leslie who played a special version of the song My Way in a video message to a tearful Fern.

Fern rejected rumours she quit the show after falling out with Phillip because he was being paid more than her.

Speculation over who would replace her was rife, with Myleene Klass, Melanie Sykes and Kate Garraway all mentioned.

Nigella Lawson refuses to be well-paid 'fat one'

Advertisers may, increasingly, be looking for voluptuous women to promote their products, but Nigella Lawson says she refuses to work as a model.

"I'm happy to be a representative for curvier women, but I don't really want to be known as 'the fat one'," the "domestic goddess" tells Mandrake.

"I don't really mind what people want to say about me, but it's just that I have two daughters and I don't want them growing up to believe that flesh is something to be ashamed of, particularly at their age. They need to understand not to take any notice. I'm happy with my shape."

Nigella's appearance is a constant source of fascination to the tabloids. Last week, the pulchritudinous television presenter was criticised for allegedly wearing too much make-up for the launch of a book by her husband, the art dealer Charles Saatchi.

Typically, he chose not to attend his own party. "I'm Charles's representative on Earth!" joked Nigella. "He's the same with other people's parties, not just his own.

"He's ordering the sushi. I won't let him near the kitchen, but he's good at ordering in. And his portion sizes are more generous than mine, so I won't go hungry."

Duncan about to leave Channel 4 after dispute

(Tom Stockhill)
Andy Duncan, of Channel 4

Dan Sabbagh, Media Editor

The end of Andy Duncan’s five-year reign as chief executive of Channel 4 is expected to be announced within days, ending a bloody and longrunning boardroom dispute at the broadcaster behind Big Brother.

Mr Duncan’s resignation and subsequent rapid departure was to be announced “imminently”, according to Channel 4 insiders last night, confirming one of the worst-kept secrets in British television.

He is expected to depart as the television industry gathers in Cambridge for the biennial Royal Television Society convention — and could use a scheduled appearance at the event on Friday to justify his tenure at the state-owned broadcaster.

Intense speculation had focused on Mr Duncan’s future over the summer as his alleged strained relations with Luke Johnson, the chairman, deteriorated. He is said to have gradually lost support of other members of the broadcaster’s board after Channel 4 failed to secure a government-brokered bailout amid concerns about its long-term financial security.

As recently as the end of August Mr Duncan was denying the talk, telling an audience at the Edinburgh Television Festival that “there is nothing to add”. He said: “It is rumour, speculation and gossip. It is Edinburgh. There has been rumour and speculation for the last five years. There is nothing to tell, there has been no board meeting and no vote of no confidence.”

However, even by then Channel 4 board members were talking about the timing of his exit and severance package, and it is now thought that agreement on those matters has been reached. Mr Duncan, who came to Channel 4 in 2004 via marketing roles at Unilever and the BBC, is not expected to linger, departing rapidly with a payoff of up to £585,000, or one year’s salary.

His position is expected to be taken up on an acting basis by Anne Bulford, the broadcaster’s low-profile finance director. It is not clear when the recruitment process will begin because Mr Johnson is to depart at the end of the year, and the task of recruiting a chief executive would logically be handled best by Mr Johnson’s successor.

Early favourites to succeed Mr Duncan are Peter Fincham, the popular director of television at ITV, who lost out to Mr Duncan last time round. Other potential contenders include Jana Bennett, the BBC’s director of television, who also has applied for the job before, and Lord Carter of Barnes, the former minister, who it is thought could take a job in the media industry starting from next year, about six months after leaving the Government.

Mr Duncan’s tenure was dominated by efforts to secure Channel 4’s finances, in the belief that falling advertising revenues caused by a declining audience would make it impossible to fund programmes such as Channel 4 News and Dispatches through profits generated by Big Brother. He did not secure any cash from the BBC licence fee and battled to create an alternative source of profit by developing a joint-venture partnership with BBC Worldwide.

Mr Duncan’s exit comes as ITV is close to appointing Tony Ball as chief executive, although final negotiations with Mr Ball have been dragging on. By yesterday Mr Ball, who has been offered the job, had not heard from Sir James Crosby, the head of ITV’s nominations committee, although it is widely believed that the former BSkyB chief executive will land the job this week.

Alexandra Burke wants Robert Pattinson to be her Bad Boy

X Factor star Alexandra Burke has pleaded with her management to let her attend the Twilight premiere so she can meet Robert Pattinson. Details here
.15 September 2009 07:17 AM

Alexandra Burke is a fan of bad boys, the title of her new single, and the X Factor lovely has her eye on none other than Twilight star Robert Pattinson.

Speaking to stv.tv she told us she would love to attend the Twilight Premiere but indicated that she has such a hectic schedule just now, she doesn’t know if her management would let her.

When asked is she was going she looked at her record company staff and said: Why not, if management allow it, then why not?”

The stunning singer flashed a cheeky grin and added: “I’de like to meet him.” She may have some competition though as another British pop star has her eye on the singer.

Frankie Sandford of girl band The Staurdays recently said "My celebrity dream date would be Rob Pattinson.” She added: "I'm desperately trying to get to the premiere of his new film but Dougie (her boyfriend and McFly bassist) won't take me.”

It seems the Twilight star could have his choice of celebrity stunners… Kristen Stewart beware! New Moon will be in cinemas on November 20.

Rachel Stevens wins Rear of the Year accolade

The former S Club 7 singer and Strictly Come Dancing runner-up shares the title with tenor Russell Watson, who described landing the men's prize as "better than getting an OBE".

The pair follow figures such as Denise Van Outen, Melinda Messenger and Robbie Williams in being chosen for the award.

They received a huge vote for the 2009 Rear of the Year at the official website for the award which is now in its 27th year.

Stevens, 31, who has previously been voted the world's second sexiest woman in an annual poll for FHM magazine, said: "I'm very flattered and I'm now going to insure each cheek for a considerable sum of money."

Watson, who bounced back after surgery for a brain tumour in 2007, said: ''For the past 10 years it's always been about The Voice but, for the first time, I'm delighted to say it's about my rear. Winning the Rear of the Year Award is better than getting an OBE."

Award organiser Tony Edwards said: "They've both been high on the list of contenders for the past few years but this year broke through with amazing support.

"This is the era of the well-toned rear when people are taking care of their bodies with workouts, jogging, and aerobics. Rachel and Russell typify the look."

Strictly Come Dancing judge Bruno Tonioli is looking forward to the "energy" Alesha Dixon will bring to the show.

Bruno avoided talking about former judge Arlene Phillips in an interview with The People by praising the new member of the panel.

He told the newspaper: "I loved Alesha when she competed.

"She's so bubbly and she'll bring energy that hopefully I can use too.

"She just needs to be herself. You can't try to be somebody else on Strictly.

"The public may or may not agree with you, but they have their say by picking up the phone."

The judge added that he was excited about the new series, especially with Footballers' Wives stars Zoe Lucker and Laila Rouass competing this year.

He added: "I'm looking forward to the battle of the bitches.

"I really hope they will be as feisty and bitchy as they were on Footballers' Wives."

Birmingham Strictly Come Dancing star ditches acting to become a teacher instead
Sep 15 2009

SHE was the star of TV’s biggest shows – and beat Angelina Jolie in a poll to find the sexiest women in the world.

Brummie Sarah Manners had a lead role in Casualty and won the hearts of the nation in Strictly Come Dancing.

But now the 34-year-old actress has had to take up teaching because times are tight in the recession.

As hospital receptionist Bex Reynolds, Sarah was a familiar face and a favourite of the fans.

And when Brendan Cole reduced her to tears in Strictly, it sparked a storm of protest from her supporters.

Then, after leaving Casualty to spend more time with computer salesman husband Ben O’Sullivan, Sarah disappeared from our screens.

Now she has taken up teaching drama to children to boost her income.

“Times are definitely hard in acting,” Sarah told the Sunday Mercury. “There’s not a lot of new stuff being made. The recession is hitting everybody.

“I’ve done bits and pieces, and some theatre tours. I’ve done a couple of pilots for shows but they haven’t been picked up.

“I’ve just had a couple of big auditions, so I’m hoping something will come from that.

“In the meantime, I’ve been teaching at the Helen O’Grady Drama Academy. I really enjoy it and seeing the effect it has on the five to 11-year-olds. Learning how to act is a brilliant tool – it can nip shyness in the bud and help children to do better at school. It’s so rewarding, seeing the children improve.”

In her spare time she will be watching the new series of Strictly, which begins this Friday evening.

Sarah still smarts from the remarks made by her second series partner Brendan Cole, who said dancing with her was like “dancing with a brick wall”.

When she heard Brendan’s new partner Jo Wood had been crying in rehearsals last week, Sarah laughed wryly: “I’m not surprised!

“The pressure of the show is huge. Brendan has every right to be strict and to work his partners hard to get the best out of them.

“But there are more supportive ways of doing it.”

Sarah returns to the Midlands next week in a new play about cancer – but it won’t help her finances. The actress is generously giving her time free of charge to raise money for charity.

She had a skin cancer scare when she had a mole with abnormal cells removed, and has seen several friends stricken by cervical, ovarian and breast cancer, so she was pleased to help Macmillan Cancer Support by appearing in the new play.

Survivorship: To Cancer And Beyond is written by Monica Price and staged at Solihull Arts Complex next Thursday and Friday.

It stars Sarah alongside Hannah Waterman, Jean Boht, Maggie Service and Finn Atkins and tells the stories of five women surviving cancer.

It’s also a homecoming for Sarah, who grew up in Harborne and whose family still live in the area, including her sister Kate’s three-year-old twins, Florence and Jamie.

“They are just delicious, but I love handing them back,” she said.

SOPHIE SPLASHES CASH TO END FAMILY FEUD

ABOVE: BB beauty Sophie is going to buy her parents a new house
13th September 2009 By Vaz Sayed

SEXY Sophie Reade is to use her Big Brother fame to buy a new home for her family after they fell out with their neighbours.

The 20-year-old is aiming to pocket £1million after winning the show and becoming Britain’s most in-demand glamour girl.

And top of her priorities is to look after her parents who have become embroiled in the bitter feud.

The spat began two years ago when Sophie began dating Aaron Taylor, the grandson of her parents’ next-door neighbours Jeanette and Eric Kay in Nantwich, Cheshire.

Sophie’s mum Helen told the Kays that Aaron wasn’t good enough for her daughter.

Since then, the warring families have not spoken to each other.

Now Sophie wants to buy her parents a new place to get them away from their neighbours.

A source said: “Sophie’s mum had always envisaged Sophie marrying a rich businessman or a successful sportsman.

“She has been rumoured to have dated Cristiano Ronaldo and that is the kind of person that Helen thought Sophie would end up with.

“She looked down her nose a bit at Aaron. He is just a normal lad who likes to play darts for a local team and Helen didn’t think he was ambitious enough for her daughter. She was delighted when they split up.

“They don’t even talk over the garden fence.

“Sophie thinks the best solution now is to use her money to buy her family a nicer place away so there is no more trouble.”

Neighbour Jeanette, 73, said: “Her mum came round saying Sophie was too good for my grandson.

“We were not happy about it.

“She was saying, ‘My Sophie is a model and can do better than him’.

“My daughter rang her up and there was a falling out.

“We don’t speak to each other now.”

And Aaron’s mum Sandra said: “She is just a blonde with silicones.”

Strictly Come Dancing has earned a place in the record books as the world’s most successful reality television format.

Across the world, a record 38 countries have been sold the format for the BBC1 show, earning it a place in the Guinness World Records book. The seventh series begins in the UK on Friday.

Also finding its way into the new edition of the book are actors Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson buoyed by the box office success of the Harry Potter franchise.

Others who made entries into the Guinness World Records 2010, which goes on sale on Thursday, include Oasis for longest run of top 10 hits in the UK chart by a group and singer Sir Cliff Richard for most UK chart singles by a British act.

That is good that you don't have anything too strenuos to do today.
What month are you going away? I think Portugal is quite nice all year round, isn't it? That will give you and the family something to look forward to.

I read that the ice skating is back in January, at a guess it is probably the same time as CelebBB. It is good for me that I am not into Strictly, because I watch X Factor, and never usually get round to watching stuff if I have to record it. Big Grin

Sophie: 'Noirin is welcome to Kris!'
Big Brother winner Sophie Reade tells new! why she is not surprised Kris Donnelly has already got his mitts on Noirin Kelly

Posted: Tuesday 15 Sep 2009

Above: Sophie has washed her hands of Kris
Big Brother winner Sophie Reade has hit back at news that her ex Kris Donnelly is already dating fellow housemate Noirin Kelly, telling new!, “She’s welcome to him!”

Last week, Noirin and Kris went public with their romance as they enjoyed a date in a Hertfordshire park.

“They couldn’t keep their hands off each other,” said an onlooker. “They were walking along with their hands on each other’s bums, and then they stopped and sat on a bench.

"They kept looking into each other’s eyes and fondling each other. The pair of them seemed to be loving the fact everyone was looking at them!”

Kris and Noirin – who recently split from her on-off boyfriend Isaac Stout – first fuelled rumours that they were dating when they were caught canoodling at The O2 in London on September 5.

The couple arrived at the venue’s IndigO2 club holding hands and spent the night whispering into each other’s ears.

Two days later, the pair tried to fool their housemates by arriving at the Big Brother wrap party separately.

Noirin, 25 – who broke the hearts of Sree Desari, Marcus Akin and Siavash Sabbaghpour during her stint in the house – arrived at the party on the arm of hunky Tom Oliver in a bid to hide her fling with Kris.

However, insiders have confirmed to new! that Kris and Noirin are an item.

“They are dating, but it’s all hush-hush at the moment,” a source told new!. “They really like each other, but realise there’ll be a backlash, so they are just seeing how it goes.”

But Sophie – who had a relationship with 24-year-old Kris inside the house – insists she isn’t jealous.

“I expected that to happen, to be honest,” she told new!. “He is just bitter and it was only a matter of time before she got her claws into him. I had a lucky escape.”

Last week, Sophie, who has not spoken to Kris or Noirin since winning the show, told new! that she didn’t have sex with Kris in the house – and compared his manhood to her pet chihuahuas’!

But Kris has scoffed at Sophie’s claims, and taken a swipe at her recent 1st 1lb weight gain, telling new!, “The main thing to remember here is that I have never lied [about having sex] on national TV, unlike someone.

“I have never had any complaints about my manhood in the past. All I will say about the size of my manhood is it is bigger than her mouth, but obviously not as big as her waistline.” Ouch!

Brendan Cole blasts 'Strictly' scheduling
Tuesday, September 15 2009, 09:23 BST
By Daniel Kilkelly, Entertainment Reporter

Strictly Come Dancing star Brendan Cole has criticised the BBC for scheduling the show against The X Factor.

Last week, it emerged that the popular ballroom competition has been shifted to a later timeslot on Saturday nights this year, pitting it against ITV1's annual talent search.

Speaking to The Mirror, professional dancer Cole commented: "I think it's a shame that two great shows have to compete. I don't quite get the understanding of it.

"Obviously the BBC and the powers that be decide the scheduling. It's got nothing to do with me. But I think it's sad that people are going to have to flick between the channels and not see either of the great shows in their entirety.

"I don't think it's necessary. There's enough time for both."

The BBC is believed to be standing firm despite calls for it to reconsider its decision. The corporation has stated that a later slot for Strictly is necessary to accommodate drama series Merlin earlier in the evening.

A Strictly insider admitted: "Brendan's comments probably won't go down well. The row over the scheduling hasn't been the best build-up to the programme and execs are annoyed that it is overshadowing everything."

(I think the BBC have screwed up big time, putting the timing against the X-Factor show.

Octogenarian X Factor star William Hooper has revealed that he has been hiding a secret heartache.

Octogenarian X Factor star William Hooper has revealed that he has been hiding a secret heartache.

The cheeky granddad-of-four, who won a place in boot camp with his rendition of "Come Fly With Me", told The Sun that he faces a daily struggle to care for his wife.

The 82-year-old told the newspaper that he was "singing for Dorothy", who is no longer able to speak after suffering a stroke.

He said: "She is wonderful. Her speech has gone but she smiles at everyone."

William revealed that the couple ran a dance studio in North London together for almost forty years.

He added that Dorothy was "very, very proud" to see him gain the approval of Simon Cowell, Cheryl Cole, Dannii Minogue and Louis Walsh.

Millions of viewers saw William's cheeky performance of the Frank Sinatra classic on Saturday night.

Simon Cowell asked: "Where would you be in three or four year's time?"

"I hope at the top," William replied.

Lily Allen attacks Ferrari collecting Pink Floyd
Tuesday, September 15, 2009

Lily Allen has hit out at big acts like Pink Floyd Lily Allen has hit out at Pink Floyd's Nick Mason and Ed O'Brien of Radiohead for condoning the sharing of music on the internet.

The 24-year-old singer launched a rant on her MySpace blog against file-sharing yesterday, branding it "music piracy" and claiming it was turning the British music industry into "nothing but puppets paid for by Simon Cowell" as it made it "harder and harder for new acts to emerge".

Allen wrote: "I think music piracy is having a dangerous effect on British music, but some really rich and successful artists like Nick Mason from Pink Floyd and Ed O'Brien from Radiohead don't seem to think so."

Mason and O'Brien contributed to a recent article in The Times, along with the Featured Artists Coalition, endorsing file-sharing.

Allen continued: "These guys from huge bands said file-sharing music is fine. It probably is fine for them. They do sell-out arena tours and have the biggest Ferrari collections in the world.

"For new talent though, file-sharing is a disaster as it's making it harder and harder for new acts to emerge.

"You don't start out in music with the Ferraris. Instead you get a huge debt from your record company, which you spend years working your arse off to repay.

"When you manage to get a contract, all those pretty videos and posters advertising your album have to be paid for and, as the artist, you have to pay for them.

"I've only just finished paying off all the money I owe my record company. I'm lucky that I've been successful and managed to pay it back, but not everyone's so lucky.

"The more difficult it is for new artists to make it, the less new artists you'll see and the more British music will be nothing but puppets paid for by Simon Cowell."

She added: "Is this the way we want British music to go? Now, obviously I'm going to benefit from fighting piracy, but I think without fighting it, British music is going to suffer."

Allen built up her fan base sharing her music on social networking site MySpace and blogging updates to her fans, but has recently become a devoted follower of rival networking site Twitter.

The Smile singer - who is travelling to South America for an arena tour - posted a link on Twitter to her MySpace blog saying "please read and consider".

The star, who also had a hit with Fear, vowed to campaign against music piracy and work towards finding better ways of purchasing music legally online.

She wrote: "I don't think what's out there is perfect. It's stupid that kids can't buy anything on the internet without credit, forcing them to steal Mum's credit card or download illegally.

"File-sharing's not OK for British music. I want to get people working together to use new digital opportunities to encourage new artists."

Holly Willoughby receives mixed reviews after This Morning debut
By Nicola Methven 15/09/2009

Holly Willoughby took her place on This Morning’s sofa for the first time yesterday, to a mixed reaction from fans.

Men particularly said the former model brightened up the show but other viewers, missing Fern Britton, 52, thought her “too glam”.

The ITV1 show started with Holly, 28, clinging on to Phillip Schofield as he pretended to run off as the titles appeared.

Then the new mum, known for plunging necklines while hosting Dancing on Ice, told viewers she spent a fitful night fearing all eyes would be on her bust.

Holly said: “I dreamt the first item on the show was a kind of before and after breast-feeding comparison.

“Everyone was staring at me saying, ‘Ooh, well they’re not like that any more since she’s had Harry.’

“And I’m thinking I don’t want this job any more if you’re going to be mean.”

But she received plenty of encouragement. Guest Chris Moyles said: “Holly, you’re doing a marvellous job and you look gorgeous.” While This Morning was on air the show received hundreds of messages to congratulate Holly on her new job.

Viewer Phillip, 47, told her: “You look great.” Rob Wilson said: “Even if I couldn’t hear the TV her smile and beauty would make me watch.”

Andrew Lutton added: “She brightens up an old man’s day.” But not all her fans were men. Donna Williams told her: “I never thought it would be possible to replace Fern but you have succeeded.”

Karen Banner agreed, saying: “Holly, you are doing so well. I thought I would miss Fern so much but you have made my day.”

Some viewers, logging on with nicknames in the online forums, disagreed.

Quelquechose said Holly was “too glam” adding: “Replacing experience with eye candy doesn’t work.”

Rosie Red said: “Some of the issues This Morning deals with are better suited to someone older.”

Travel-guy said: “They should have gone for experience and maturity.” Afterwards Holly said: “It feels like I’ve queued for two months for a roller coaster. Now I’ve had a go I can’t wait to get back on.”

Expert view:
Amber Morales, Fashion Director

Deciding what to wear for your first day at a new job is always challenging.

But it’s doubly hard when your outfit it going to be seen by about two million people.

So spare a thought for Holly Willoughby who didn’t have an easy task for her first day presenting ITV’s daytime chat show This Morning.

But 28-year-old Holly clearly wasn’t fazed and dressed for business in a simple tailored shift dress and a pair of classic black patent Christian Louboutin court shoes.

The figure hugging cream Diane Von Furstenberg frock ticked two boxes, looking sexy and stylish on her hourglass curves without being as revealing as THAT Dancing on Ice number.

Now we wonder what she has up her sleeve for today ...

Jim Shelley, Shelley vision

Some viewers are not happy about replacing Fern Britton with Holly Willoughby.

Willoughby is inane, sugary, one of those classic presenters who mindlessly witters away. In other words, perfect. She’s like a Russian doll version of Fern – younger and slimmer.

Willoughby is a girl of many talents. She can read an autocue and beam for Britain.

And she’s no fool. She laughs at everything Phillip Schofield says.

She seemed happy to let him lead and act as the programme’s “eye candy”.

She began the show with a reference to two of her other famous “assets” in a dream she’d had. A brilliant ploy to make sure the audience stared at the right area.

She did everything the show needed. She was bright and breezy and fitted in perfectly with the tone required for two hours of coffee morning TV. She seems like a safe choice for the sofa.
