England beat South Africa in the cricket second test. First time they've done that in Cape Town since 1957.

Of course there was the international sporting boycott of South Africa for years. That was throughout the 1970s and 80s.

It makes the three game series more interesting now England have won though El

It's a four test series. The third is in Port Elizabeth (from the 16th) and the fourth in Johannesburg (from the 24th) (also 3 one day matches and 3 T20s - those are in February)

Yogi, I was thinking of you this morning with your physio appointment . I thought she would give you some regular exercises to do. It may take a few days before you notice improvement but the exercises will work in due course. That's what I found when I had a rotator cuff injury in my shoulder.

Same as when I was referred for my arthritic hips, El.
I’ll definitely stick with the exercises.

I hope you had a good time with the little ones

The weather has been wet and windy all day. Quite cold too but it is winter after all πŸ˜‰

I've been looking at the tax accounts on the HMRC site for all my self-assessment clients to see what they are showing as due by the end of the month. Last year I found many errors by HMRC. This time it seems a lot better.

The only oddities I've found are:
a husband and wife where the tax statements seem to be in a non-standard format and don't include a payslip; and
another client where there's no statement at all.

So I've written to the clients about this and included payslips to use if they haven't received anything from HMRC. The payslips I've printed off wouldn't be accepted at banks and if the clients were to pay by cheque they would have to post them to HMRC so would have to allow a week to clear.

It's possible that the client for whom there's no statement hasn't been sent on as the amount of tax is under Β£100 (just). I think there may be an unofficial decision by HMRC not to insist on payment by the due date if the tax is under Β£100 though I haven't confirmed this. The tax wouldn't be written off by HMRC and would get carried forward to another year until the accumulative tax gets over Β£100. I suspect many people would prefer just to pay the tax so that it wasn't hanging over them.

I mentioned a year ago that I had found that for one client their tax return hadn't gone through the system so no tax was being shown as due. I sorted it out. I thought at the time that it might have been caused by me filing his return at about the same time as his wife's. His wife had transferred some of her personal allowance to him (10% marriage allowance claim).

This time I filed his return a couple of days after her return. They went through correctly.

Very recently HMRC have advised people to do what I did. Where one spouse is transferring some allowance to the other, the person making the transfer should file their self assessment tax return before the person getting the allowance files their return. This only applies where the couple file tax returns and haven't got the claim built in to their tax codes used for employment and pensions.

Good afternoon everyone

The weather isn’t to bad here. Cool, a slight breeze but on the whole quite nice πŸ‘

Shopped and had a wander around the local towns

Had to break into one of my outbuildings because the lock had ceased to work

I finally managed to get in after several hours a couple of days ago and an hour today

A new dead lock fitted. No damage to the inside or outside of the door but the old lock is a mess

Have a lovely day everyone

Moonie

I bought a guillotine many years ago to use. Yesterday I realised that the guard next to the blade had become detached. Tried to see if I could re-attach it but couldn't. So I bought a replacement guillotine and it arrived a short while ago. It seems to be working properly.

It's a breach of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 to use a guillotine with a faulty guard so I had little choice other than to buy a replacement.

If you want to see a clip of it in action here's a Youtube clip:

Well done on getting the old lock off and replacing it, Moonie

Rained here last night, cloudy at present but dry, more rain forecast for later.

Moonie, I worded my guillotine post to be accurate but also a touch misleading

Yogi, that's great news about the exercises already helping

I hope everyone has a good day

Here’s me thinking it was my twisted mind, El
