This 'Wait and see' approach by the world was (right from the start), in my opinion, so lack-a-daisical and short sighted. This was a new strain of virus that no-one knew anything about, but the Powers-that-be (mainly) decided to sit back and treat it like it was just a stronger strain of flu. Now that it has been proved to be more than that, it is going to be much harder to contain, if at all! Initial approach to this should have been much more robust, precicely BECAUSE it was a new and unknown strain.

The schools nearby ( and the one my granddaughters attend) are quite small and usually belong to a federation where the teachers , especially the head teacher, move around, there are joint class/school events, any siblings attend the local secondary school which have had a recent trip to Italy. The “suspect” could have already infected many and passed the virus on

machel

I agree it’s worrying Machel ....one school in a nearby area has closed after a trip . But I can’t help but wonder if it’s all being made worse by the media . If you look at the actual numbers affected , and the number of those that have died I think it’s about 1%  ....which is no worse than normal  flu . So I’m trying not to panic too much . Hopefully they will have a vaccine by next year .

Although that is reassuring we only have china’s word and people were moving around without knowledge of the virus, if it is confirmed that the person at the school has the virus then that could be 1 in 30/40

I think that the spread of fear in the way the media covers this causes anxiety and panic which only helps the virus spread as fear lowers immunity

Having said that my son is working in South Korea for a year and they have a high rate of infection. The schools are shut and everyone is wears a mask Where he lives the bridge is closed so travel is minimised. They get texts from the government health agency frequently with advice and information. I try not to worry or get into conversations where people unleash their anxiety as it really doesn't help.

South Korea are obviously well prepared unfortunately that is not replicated elsewhere.  I am glad for the media coverage (although I am relying on BBC news as opposed to tabloids)  whilst the actions of this government are deafening in their silence. Am I panicking? no,  am I concerned? yes,  I am in the “vulnerable” group where the implications are more serious

Very reassuring - adding to the 'DON'T PANIC' advice.

Covid-19 incubation period can be up to 24 days instead of 14, says new research from China The incubation period for Covid-19 could be as long as 24 days, instead of the previously thought 14 days, according to new research by researchers in China.

useful site.

Of closed cases, 7% have died, but mainly people with a pre existing condition. It is affecting people over 50 disproportionately high and very few children have been affected. Like you say, flu and measles have been much more deadly and contagious. Media making this worse, although I think China should have been much more careful at the outset and not try and cover it all up.

I heard that the other day Roxan ....they speculated that the elderly ...aka me ......might have something that makes it easier for the virus to attach itself  ....or words to that effect ....but I agree , although it’s very worrying ....I do think the media is hyping it up a bit

Hi just spoke to my son in SK and he gets at least 2 texts a day with details of all new cases and their exact wherebouts ...so where not to go and when the area has been cleaned and safe again..as well as other advice. We have had very limited information here so far. There is a case of a man back from a skiing trip in Italy with his family who may have been living less than a mile away from me (unconfirmed by authorities/news} we know he's been taken to a hospital in England. We don't know if he was out and about here before he got tested. I don't think we should panic at all but we also need to be informed .

been reading an article in Wales Online which isn't really very comforting as people who were in contact with the man and his family before he was tested were given different advice like some were told to send kids to school and others to keep them home and in at least one case wrong advice...also treated quite casually and not taken seriously one of them said. So far a shambles

I'm considered "vulnerable" too, due to those pesky "underlying health conditions".

And yes: while I accept there has been some utter nonsense in the far corners of the "media", I appreciate the reporting of the likes of the BBC too. After watching a BBC report on a doctor in China struggling to deal with the emergency - and losing 5 patients in one day - I can't help feeling that there hasn't been enough concern in some quarters...

He's an easy target, of course, but I really believe that Trump has to take much of the blame for recent events in the States: even by his standards, he's handled this abysmally.

Firing his Pandemic Response Team to fund tax cuts; reducing funding for the CDC; and, until very recently, insisting it was all a hoax created by the media and the Democrats. It was inevitable that when things finally did go pear-shaped, Wall St would panic because they had been left in the dark and completely unprepared.

Now that the first death in the US has been announced (and in Washington State too, so a great big  to all our GaGa friends), I think it's understandable that when Wall St reopens on Monday, many will think about how the US response is now being led by a science-denying creationist who believes smoking doesn't kill and condoms give "very poor" protection against STDs, and come to the conclusion that things are likely to get a whole lot worse before they get better...

After months we are still sailing blindfold into this. Act now, even though it's far too late - that horse has bolted. Open borders with people from all over walking through airports unchecked for starters. No thermometers, hand gel or info. Nothing. No info on self-quarantine for Italians or Iranians. Where's the crowd control as in Europe? If you think the NHS is coping with this dream on.

They know how this is heading. Hancock really struggled this morning - you'd think you were about to pull all his teeth. He's a joke like Johnson and the rest of them. This is life v money/economy and this bunch of shysters are going to choose money. It's frightening, completely inept and criminal.

Boris Johnson will say the NHS is well-prepared and the government will "stop at nothing" to fight the virus.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Really?

Then why (harsh as it may seem) are we still letting travel into this country happen?

In light of the recent report suggesting that the incubation period is more likely to be 24 days, not 14 (which was just a guess), why are we still saying you are OK if you test negative after14 days? - off you go and waltz about the country to your hearts content!

I have to admit that I do wonder why there is so much hype about this . So far , like you say,  it sounds like a virulent flu strain ....which is constantly changing , and which we get every year ...but I’m wondering what they aren’t telling us . As someone in the high risk category,  I switch between blind panic and common sense  I have to admit I’ve stocked up on dettol wipes etc...and I’ve always been overly cautious about hand washing.....but the bottom line is what will be , will be ....or that’s how I feel until the next newsflash

Apparently when you cough or sneeze, microscopic moisture droplets are catapulted from your mouth and/or nose up to that distance. Therefore to protect yourself as much as possible you should keep that distance (as a minimum) between yourself and other people.

Extremely Fluffy Fluffy Thing

Growing up we were always told to cover our mouths when coughing/sneezing - part of general good manners. Sadly such things as good manners died a death in this country many years ago and unbridled coughing and sneezing is the norm and general good manners is unheard of - mostly.

I know what you're saying, Velvet, but one of the things that recent events has brought home to me is just how bad certain members of the GBP are at basic hygiene.

I was in a pub on Saturday evening that's heavily geared towards family dining, and I retired to the toilets to "wash my hands" before eating. While using the hand-drier, a bloke came out of the stall and walked straight out the door without even stopping to think of running his hands under a tap!

Not uncommon of course, but still not on under normal circumstances.  Given the current situation, I just stared in shock!

Due to health issues and immunosuppressant medications, I have a compromised immune system. I’m not getting into a panic but I am taking, what I consider to be, sensible precautions I.e. lots of hand washing, hand sanitiser, Dettol spray and wipes etc.
@Eugene's Lair, I have been shocked at how many women use public toilets and then walk straight out without washing their hands - I use tissues or wipes to open the doors because the handles must be covered in germs.

Yes, because even if you wash your hands vigorously, you still have to turn off taps (though more and more public toilets are installing automated facilities) and open the door!
