some secondary schools have recently returned from northern Italy and are issuing statements to parents about watching for symptoms. Two primary schools very close by are closed and undergoing a “deep clean”

This 'Wait and see' approach by the world was (right from the start), in my opinion, so lack-a-daisical and short sighted. This was a new strain of virus that no-one knew anything about, but the Powers-that-be (mainly) decided to sit back and treat it like it was just a stronger strain of flu. Now that it has been proved to be more than that, it is going to be much harder to contain, if at all! Initial approach to this should have been much more robust, precicely BECAUSE it was a new and unknown strain.
And official Gov advice is to go to school as normal
The schools nearby ( and the one my granddaughters attend) are quite small and usually belong to a federation where the teachers , especially the head teacher, move around, there are joint class/school events, any siblings attend the local secondary school which have had a recent trip to Italy. The “suspect” could have already infected many and passed the virus on
I agree it’s worrying Machel ....one school in a nearby area has closed after a trip . But I can’t help but wonder if it’s all being made worse by the media . If you look at the actual numbers affected , and the number of those that have died I think it’s about 1% ....which is no worse than normal flu . So I’m trying not to panic too much . Hopefully they will have a vaccine by next year .

Although that is reassuring we only have china’s word and people were moving around without knowledge of the virus, if it is confirmed that the person at the school has the virus then that could be 1 in 30/40

But it appears to be fairly mild in the majority of cases Machel .....hopefully
I think that the spread of fear in the way the media covers this causes anxiety and panic which only helps the virus spread as fear lowers immunity
Having said that my son is working in South Korea for a year and they have a high rate of infection. The schools are shut and everyone is wears a mask Where he lives the bridge is closed so travel is minimised.They get texts from the government health agency frequently with advice and information. I try not to worry or get into conversations where people unleash their anxiety as it really doesn't help.

South Korea are obviously well prepared unfortunately that is not replicated elsewhere. I am glad for the media coverage (although I am relying on BBC news as opposed to tabloids) whilst the actions of this government are deafening in their silence. Am I panicking? no, am I concerned? yes, I am in the “vulnerable” group where the implications are more serious
