If I'm eating the hot stew, it could be Lisburn.
this quiz is from richard osman (i follow him on twitter) and the prize is the pointless book (due out on the 11th) so not a prize of great wealth, however i have now been outed on twitter as not playing "in the spirit" (gaga is now trending on twitter!!!!!) i don't think i am being unfair as if i was at work etc i would be asking colleagues, although someone is now (or has done) putting on wrong answers, if that is you, please don't, (i would rather you refrain from answering) as that would not be "in the spirit"

Oh dear!
I was going to suggest Bath for hot lumpy stew, but that may just be mine.
Same here. The 'trends' on my feed never seem to match what I'm being told is trending.
"lumpy" may refer to an anagram whether "hot stew" or a hot stew (casserole?) ?

Definately leeds for 2 clues.

It has a dual name, Derry/Londonderry, for politically sensitive reasons.
When you are on twitter and on the left you will see your name etc, then under 'who to follow', under that you will see trends, that apparently means what most people are mentioning in their tweets.
i am stuck on continued. help please !

New comes from rearranging castle and getting cleats dinnit?
New castle = cleats.

Cleats or studs are protrusions on the sole of a shoe, or on an external attachment to a shoe, that provide additional traction on a soft or slippery surface
are any cities the name of some sort of shoes/studs? like Derby for hat??
So we have:-

leaver - EXET ER
fire queen - LIS BURN
buried s - S UNDER LAND
confusing for lads - SALFORD

I've got all of them except for 18 and 19. ('Cleats' and 'Time to move on to e')
I wanna put Newcastle for Cleats because it's an anagram of Castle. Also, I googled cleats and it's also the name of a comic strip about a football team (Newcastle FC?)

Technically speaking it's Newcastle Upon Tyne, and as cleat is a nautical term (used to secure a rope on a boat), this answer fits even more.
Oh yes. Hope I haven't given the impression that I came up with all the answers myself, I was just collating them.
Oh yes. Hope I haven't given the impression that I came up with all the answers myself, I was just collating them.
lets see what tomorrow brings. surely this can only get easier as we run out of cities??
all the suggestions were correct (it was newcastle and cardiff) todays list:
replace your old drugs
genuine caviar
pan-cook rabbit town
mess behind rug
the result of a chinese burn
dagenham?
left opening around september 1st
a right tit
this city won the next one
this city was won by the last one
good luck!
mess behind rug = Edinburgh
I think I have genuine caviar, pan-cook rabbit town, mess behind rug, result of chinese burn, dagenham?, left opening around september first. some certain some slightly dubious. I have a very dubious guess for replace your old drugs.
will leave it till after lunch to give people a chance before i say what i think they are
genuine caviar = Truro
this city won the next one = Winchester
this city was won by the last one = Chester
i thought that but i think its too obvious and more importantly Richard said no city would be used twice and chester was an answer yesterday so it cant be. i was thinking maybe winchester and worcester (as in win the war/wor) but i dont think thats right.
dagenham? = Hereford (home of Ford cars)
this city won the next one = Winchester
this city was won by the last one = Chester
Already had Chester, and I'm guessing they won't repeat cities. Like the thinking though.
I've got Edinburgh for 24 and Truro for 22. "The result of a chinese burn" might be ARMAGH.
i thought that but i think its too obvious and more importantly Richard said no city would be used twice and chester was an answer yesterday so it cant be. i was thinking maybe winchester and worcester (as in win the war/wor) but i dont think thats right.
Ah right. I didn't remember what cities had gone already....and it did seem a little too straightforward
So far I have:
Genuine Caviar = Truro (True Roe)
Pan-cook rabbit town = Peterborough (Peter pan/peter rabbit and burrow=burough)
Mess behind rug = Edinburgh (anagram of beind rug) as said
The result of chinese burn = Armagh (bad joke) as said
Dagenham?= Hereford (as in here ford as mentioned before)
Left opening around september 1st = I think may be westminster (Left=West and houses of parliament opens in september i think) not too sure about that one but closest i can get so far.
for Replace your old drugs all i acn see is Newry. New=replace old and Rx is medicines so maybe Ry is the new one. again not convinced of this but closest i have.
A right tit - Bristol?
was wondering if "replace your old drugs" was also an anagram "replace your/rearrange" old drugs - but can't make a city from the letters left and usually in cryptic circles if "right" is used then it means the letter r begins or ends the word.
*back to study list again
A right tit - Bristol?
explanation please??
"bristols" is slang for tits, (or is it cockney - bristol city = titty?) so a right tit would be singular and therefore just Bristol
this city won the next one Manchester
this city was won by the last one Derby
I think one of the answers is Derby, as in local derby, but I can't figure out who won what when. Could be Manchester (Utd. v City) or London teams. Be back later.
I like that Manchester and Derby answer. City won the most recent derby game at the end of last season.
Newry is definitely the drugs one (Newer E)

My guess is Glasgow and Derby.
Glasgow have won the right to host the next Commowealth Games.
Derby for the same reason has above. Rangers & Celtic.
cannot see derby as an answer - many other clues could be used for that city, and there are many football derbies
back to the drawing board........

Personally I think the Glasgow/Rangers/Celtic is too tenuous.
Whareas (to me)the Manchester one feels exactly right.

Yes, but how many football teams are called [Something] City AND participate in a local derby?
"cryptic clues and terrible puns"
this is why i am struggling with the last two, "this city won the next one" other than glasgow which is hosting the commonwealth games, it would have to be a play on words, similar to the last clue
Well that's the beauty/frustration of cryptic clues, you have to consider all the possible meaning of all given words/phrases.
'THIS CITY' could refer directly to a city name
-OR-
THIS 'CITY' could refer to an entity called 'something City'
How about "this city won the next one" as Glasgow - because it was the city that won the hosting of the next Commonwealth Games; and "this city was won by the last one" as Manchester because it was the city that won the hosting of the last Commonwealth Games that were held in the UK - just an idea, but haven't convinced myself yet!
Yes, that works as well as the football analogy.
Edit: Oh no! it doesn't.
As that would mean Manchester 'was won' by the last Comonwealth games
I don't think the commonwealth one works, because Manchester itself was not "won" by anything.
Does anyone have any ideas for the left opening around september 1st clue? I'm completely blank on that one.
I don't think the commonwealth one works, because Manchester itself was not "won" by anything.
Does anyone have any ideas for the left opening around september 1st clue? I'm completely blank on that one.
It was given earlier, seamed reasonable.
Westminster. West being to the right (assuming North is to the top)
And Houses of Parliament open around early September.
Going by this and last quizzes it is unlikely to be referring to something like the derby or commonwealth games it is more likely to be a crossword style pun/cryptic clue. Is driving me mad. Apparently lots of people getting these 2 quite easily think we are overthinking it. help please
Parliament opened on 9th May this year?

Does it? I thought Parliament opened in May, and used to be much later in the year. The West bit works, not sure on the september part.
I think it might be Wakefield instead of Westminster.
Wake from that Green Day song 'Wake me up when September ends' and Field from the saying 'left field'....very tenuous I know!
Actually that sounds silly looking back, I was hoping their was a city with the word Fall in it for Autumn!
Could be Wells. A (water/oil) well is a hole or opening and the 1st (letter) of September is s.
There's various recesses throughout the year. Parliament closes in mid-July and opens again on the first Monday of September I think
im going with wells too, the open5ng - well is to the left of the first of september - this makes the most sense. What about
Going by this and last quizzes it is unlikely to be referring to something like the derby or commonwealth games it is more likely to be a crossword style pun/cryptic clue. Is driving me mad. Apparently lots of people getting these 2 quite easily think we are overthinking it. help please
The football and commonwealth games answers are only if the two clues are linked to each other, but what if they aren't?
todays have been difficult (still don't have them all) and i am now doubting westminster - wells fits too, wonder if either will be allowed??
The epsom Derby was once won by a horse called Doncaster. Possible?
doncaster isnt a city unfortunately, I am def swaying towards wells due to his liking for crossword style rather than general knowledge/facts. Thats why I think the answer to 29 and 30 will be more related to pronunciation or just a bad pun
Just looked on twitter and there are only 4 people with 30/30 so "carnage" indeed today!
Doncaster isn't a city.
Lester (Leicester) Piggott won the Derby though...
Shame those four people aren't helping us non tweeters here.

ANY THOUGHTS ON 'dagenham?' ?
Personally I think Manchester and Derby makes more sense than Leicester and Derby because its THIS CITY WON THE NEXT ONE, as in Manchester City won the Derby... Richard's sort of wordplay for this city,
hes a big footie fan apparently too
I like the Wells answer better than Westminster too.
Doncaster and Derby are quite good, but....should these answers not be something we can arrive at without 'specialist' knowledge?
just a thought!
this city won the next one:
be right on
brighton??? or does it fit was won by the last one?
Ely / Londonderry were answers on Monday. I wouldn't have got London Derry without googling 'Derry Chancellor'

Hereford

Didn't Newry go yesterday? And I thought Preston had gone too.
I think the answer to "LEFT OPENING AROUND SEPTEMBER 1ST" is PORTSMOUTH
Left = Port (of a ship)
opening = Mouth
and the S in the middle comes from the "first letter of September because it says "Left opening AROUND September 1st!

Brilliant! Makes the most sense!

Newry still in preston gone sorry.
Hereford for Daagenham is a bit of a stretch is it not? also it is a question DAGENHAM?
Thinking of joining twitter after all this!!!

Not that much of a stretch. To me Dagenham and Ford motor cars are synonymous. And 'where'? is a question.
I like that Portsmouth answer up there ^^^
New member. Was following and had thought about left opening as Portsmouth but see you have already reached same conclusion. Unfortunately had to wait ages for email to sign on.
Nothing on twitter will help except only 4 correct replies today so far. Need 29 and 30. Agree about all the others.
Sorry to harp on, but I thought Newry had been given as the answer to that 'drug' clue - maybe that was 2 days ago.
We can't let Clues 29 and 30 beat us - so far I've come up with Glasgow, Manchester, Derby, Worcester and Winchester as possible answers - none of which I can convince myself are correct - someone out there HELP!!
Welcome Mary Grace

Had just been thinking it probably wasn't Wells, because of the 'AROUND' Sept 1st bit of the clue.
Must be old age setting in! At least I had it linked with the correct clue.

Regarding the list of cities left I have Newry, Truro, Peterborough, Edinburgh, Armagh, Hereford, Portsmouth and Bristol for clues 21 to 28. Any help for last two please.
brighton fits either of the last clues,
"b(e) right on" could mean winning

Hi Mary Grace, 'We're working on it!' is the best we can say at the moment.
I agree with suzybean..WINchester and Chester...

A bit spurious though. Surely it would have to fit exactly, not just in a loose way?
