Crumpets are thicker, smaller and more doughy. A bready texture not a battery one. 

Honest, that's what the bakers sell as crumpets here!  A Scotch pancake is the wee one in front.. though I have seen those other,pale, doughy-looking crumpets in Tescos .

Aye, the wee one is a Scotch pancake and the big yin's a crumpet. I've also heard them called 'crimpets' round these parts.
