So if anyone gets an email supposedly from WHO, don't assume that it's genuine.

useful site.

Of closed cases, 7% have died, but mainly people with a pre existing condition. It is affecting people over 50 disproportionately high and very few children have been affected. Like you say, flu and measles have been much more deadly and contagious. Media making this worse, although I think China should have been much more careful at the outset and not try and cover it all up.

I heard that the other day Roxan ....they speculated that the elderly ...aka me ......might have something that makes it easier for the virus to attach itself  ....or words to that effect ....but I agree , although it’s very worrying ....I do think the media is hyping it up a bit

Hi just spoke to my son in SK and he gets at least 2 texts a day with details of all new cases and their exact wherebouts ...so where not to go and when the area has been cleaned and safe again..as well as other advice. We have had very limited information here so far. There is a case of a man back from a skiing trip in Italy with his family who may have been living less than a mile away from me (unconfirmed by authorities/news} we know he's been taken to a hospital in England. We don't know if he was out and about here before he got tested. I don't think we should panic at all but we also need to be informed .

It’s good that your son is getting food information Amythist I saw that one in your area , and wondered if it was near you ....hopefully they will have  found all his contacts by now

been reading an article in Wales Online which isn't really very comforting as people who were in contact with the man and his family before he was tested were given different advice like some were told to send kids to school and others to keep them home and in at least one case wrong advice...also treated quite casually and not taken seriously one of them said. So far a shambles

Awwww Roxan I can understand your concerns , but I do think that they are exaggerating the economic threat , tbh

Oh Baz. Sending my best thoughts to protect your daughter.

Thank you both

Heard today that the sister and family of one of Miss KTs friends has been put into quarantine (Tenerife hotel but at home )

medics came out to test them, but results not back yet. However, they were reassured in relation to the children because the medics said that even if they do get the virus it is very mild in children

I think that the spread of fear in the way the media covers this causes anxiety and panic which only helps the virus spread as fear lowers immunity

Having said that my son is working in South Korea for a year and they have a high rate of infection. The schools are shut and everyone is wears a mask Where he lives the bridge is closed so travel is minimised. They get texts from the government health agency frequently with advice and information. I try not to worry or get into conversations where people unleash their anxiety as it really doesn't help.

.

South Korea are obviously well prepared unfortunately that is not replicated elsewhere.  I am glad for the media coverage (although I am relying on BBC news as opposed to tabloids)  whilst the actions of this government are deafening in their silence. Am I panicking? no,  am I concerned? yes,  I am in the “vulnerable” group where the implications are more serious

I'm considered "vulnerable" too, due to those pesky "underlying health conditions".

And yes: while I accept there has been some utter nonsense in the far corners of the "media", I appreciate the reporting of the likes of the BBC too. After watching a BBC report on a doctor in China struggling to deal with the emergency - and losing 5 patients in one day - I can't help feeling that there hasn't been enough concern in some quarters...

He's an easy target, of course, but I really believe that Trump has to take much of the blame for recent events in the States: even by his standards, he's handled this abysmally.

Firing his Pandemic Response Team to fund tax cuts; reducing funding for the CDC; and, until very recently, insisting it was all a hoax created by the media and the Democrats. It was inevitable that when things finally did go pear-shaped, Wall St would panic because they had been left in the dark and completely unprepared.

Now that the first death in the US has been announced (and in Washington State too, so a great big  to all our GaGa friends), I think it's understandable that when Wall St reopens on Monday, many will think about how the US response is now being led by a science-denying creationist who believes smoking doesn't kill and condoms give "very poor" protection against STDs, and come to the conclusion that things are likely to get a whole lot worse before they get better...

It's not in my nature to worry about this sort of thing as although I'm in a vulnerable group - it always feels like the media is always trying to frighten people.  But this time I am starting to worry.  I did think twice about going to the supermarket yesterday.

And yet you wouldn't have to, if our shitstorm of a government got it's act together.
