Good morning overcast but pleasant here today

thank you El I’m meeting a group of friends for lunch today

i haven’t seen fortnite but all the kids here are playing & talking about it, it is very popular

what are the rest of you doing today?

Enjoy your lunch and your day off, Summer

Yogi19

Summer,  I hope you have a good lunch with your friends

Yogi, looking at the Wiki article on Fortnite, it's not the sort of game I would ever play. Co-operative survival shoot-up against zombies and it costs players to get any bits of upgrade. The developers have made many games over the years, not that any of them are of appeal to me, the best known being the Unreal series and Gears of War series, the sort of games which are too violent for youngsters but they still play them.

Squiggle, I hope the weather improves for you

Good morning everyone, quite a change from yesterday, grey clouds wall to wall and a stiff breeze.  I hope you have better weather for your day off Summer.

Enjoy your day everyone

Sorry Squiggle, I missed your post this morning. I think we were all posting at the same time.

I hope your weather has improved since this morning.

Many years ago I saw a film on television but I couldn't remember what it was called. I knew it was an European film, that it was set in the Middle Ages, that it was about a boy searching the countryside on a quest and that there was the constant threat of plague. (It's not The Navigator, a Medieval Odyssey which is better known - that was an Australian/New Zealand film, not European).

I had tried to find it some years ago without success but I think I've found it. You may have heard of The Singing Ringing Tree (1957). It's reputed to be quite a scary film considering that it's a childrens film. I haven't seen it though one can get it on DVD but apparently there's a strobing effect on the DVD which I waould find really offputting. The film was made by an East Germany (as it was at the time) film company called DEFA. They made other childrens films based on the likes of the stories of the Brothers Grimm. Closer to the dark stories of Grimm rather than the Disneyfied versions.

I think the film is "Dar Licht der Liebe" which means The Light of Love (1991). I found a DVD on the German site of Amazon and using Google Translate, the description sounds right. It was made by DEFA and the date of the film makes sense.

I've ordered a copy and will see if I'm right. (same DVD region as UK and it mentions that there are English titles).

BBC news just now ended with a tribute to Stephen Hawking. The music used was unmistakeably by Brian Eno. As it's a piece that people are likely to recognise even if they can't name it, it's called An Ending (Ascent) from his Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks 1983 album.

Next snow event confirmed for this coming weekend, my area could get 2 to 4 inches on Sunday. At present, not expected to be as bad as the recent snow event.

Hope it isn’t as bad as last time

Good morning everyone

The band of rain mentioned on the weather forecasts passed over here about 4 hours ago. It's fairly cloudy here now and showers are likely.

Dental hygienist & checkup this morning.

I hope everyone has a good day

Yesterday morning when I was out, when I was at a double mini roundabout I saw someone going straight over the middle of the first roundabout.

It was a police woman on a horse There's a small subdivision of mounted police. They do do patrols as well as attend events.

El Loro

Good morning everyone.

Back to wind and rain, up here.

Love the pic of the police horse, El

Good luck at the dentist

Off to Morrisons to do the weekly grocery shopping.

Have a good day, everyone.

Yogi19

Good morning cold, grey & wet here, I hope you’re all warm and cosy

Lunch yesterday was lovely, it turned into a 5 hour gathering! Then I had chores to catch up on, and getting the house ready for my mums next visit

~Sparkling Summer~

Thanks everyone Both the hygienist and the dentist were happy and apart from the routine scale and polish, nothing required and nothing likely to need to be done in the near future, so made the ususal 6 monthly checkup etc appointment.

Summer, that was some gathering and you must be looking forward to your mum's next visit

Yogi, I hope you get all you were looking for in Morrisons

Squiggle, that sounds as if your weather today is a big improvement over yesterdays

Yogi, it's the south and east of England mainly expected to get the snow. Each day the Met Office has been increasing the risk for the weekend. Hopefully it won't amount to much but it's clear that the extent and quantity is very uncertain.

The winter hasn't been anything like the one of 1962/63 (briefly mentioned in the latest series of Call the Midwife). In this part of the country one might expect one lot of snow in a winter but to get four lots is unusual.

Good morning everyone

Rained here overnight. Fairish weather at present and still mild. Tomorrow and Sunday is a different matter. Even if there's no snow it will still be cold. Years ago when I was working for my old firm I was in Cardiff on St Patricks Day and the Cheltenham Gold Cup was that day. When we came out of the client's offices for lunch there was snow all around.

I hope everyone has a good day

(No, I've never betted on horse races, so no tips from me )

Good morning everyone

The weather is overcast and damp. It feels cold.

When we lived right up north, I remember having snow one Easter.

I saw on BBC Breakfast that the businesses in Cheltenham consider this weekend (Gold Cup) to be their second Christmas because it’s so good for trade.

Have a good day.

Good morning 👋 raining, cold, grey and utterly miserable here lol we’ll definitely be making our own sunshine today

how are we all?

I’m going to be visiting family & friends this weekend, so I’m busy packing etc, I can’t wait to see everyone.

I see the Durrells starts on Sunday, who’s going to be watching?!

~Sparkling Summer~

Yogi, I can do one better than you. Years ago we had a lot of snow locally on Low Sunday, that's the name given to the Sunday after Easter Sunday. I was the church treasurer then and we would have the church AGM on Low Sunday. I remember trudging through the snow in the evening to get to the AGM. I can't remember which year it was so don't know if it was an early Easter in March or a later one in April.

I'm a bit puzzled about BBC Breakfast saying that this weekend would be so good for trade. The Cheltenham Meeting ends today with the Gold Cup.

Summer, I hope you have a great time this weekend visiting friends and family

El Loro

Good morning everyone, another bright morning here but sadly after this it's downhill all the way for the weekend.  Sending a bit of my sunshine to those who have none Image result for sunshine smiley

Enjoy your day everyone

The Met Office has set a record for the most weather warnings:
2 yellow today, 7 yellow and 2 amber for Saturday and 3 yellow and 2 amber (same as Saturday) for Sunday.

Welcome to mini beast from the east as it's being called

Summer, yes, I'll be watching The Durrells on Sunday  -  I think all the main characters return.

I see that BBC1 will be showing The Silent Child at 19.40 on Good Friday.

20 minute short film of a young deaf girl who has difficulty communicating. It won the Oscar for best short film.

I might have misunderstood , El. I assumed they were talking about the weekend but maybe they meant the last few days.

Yogi, for generations many people from Ireland come to Cheltenham for the Cheltenham Meeting as their annual holiday. Hotels, lodging places are booked solid months in advance. Quite a few house owners let them stay with them (and quite likely it's the same people who come to stay year after year).

Good morning everyone

Cloudy and cold here. There's snow in the air but not settling. Any settling snow is more likely tonight so Sunday could be snowy. Although there are amber warnings, it's just yellow for my area.

Yogi, I tracked down the bit of yesterday's BBC Today that you mentioned. It didn't specify the days of the Cheltenham Meeting so unless you knew whicvh days it was on one could easily assume that yesterday was the first day so into the weekend rather than the last

Summer, I hope you are having a good time with family and friends

Back from my shopping, noticeably colder then the last few days though not as cold as it was when there was the main Beast from the East.

Squiggle, I've gone back to wearing a thicker pullover (and a thicker coat when out) so I wrapped up warm.

Some strange cricket scores from the two recent matches between a New Zealand XI and England.
First match:
New Zealand XI 376 all out after 90 overs
England 319 for 14 after 90 overs
Second match:
New Zealand XI 287 for 13 after 90 overs
England 353 for 9 after 90 overs

They were practice matches for England to prepare for the tests.2 day matches with one side batting throughout one day to 90 overs - if they were bowled out, they came back in until the end of the 90th over, then vice versa on the second day.

There's a very icy wind but no sign of any snow yet.

BiB - that explains my misunderstanding, thanks El.

Have a good day, everyone
