Richard Tice was coming out of the tube station as the events unfolded.

He told BBC News: “I came out of Westminster Underground and it was clear something dramatic had happened.

“I was ushered onto the bridge and, looking up and down, there were at least eight figures on the west pavement… and then the car crashed at the south end of the bridge.

Daily Mail journalist Quentin Letts whose office overlooks the scene told the BBC of the moment police shot the man.

"This man had something in his hand, it looked like a stick of some sort and he was challenged by a couple of policemen in yellow jackets and one of the yellow-jacketed policemen fell down.

"We could see the man in black moving his arm in a way that suggested he was either stabbing or striking the yellow-jacketed policeman, and one of the policemen then ran to get help, which was very quick to come and as this attacker was running towards the entrance used by MPs to get into the House of Commons.

"As he was running he ran, about I'd say 15 yard perhaps, two plain clothes guys with guns shouted at him what sounded like a warning, he ignored it and they shot two or three times and he fell."

Scotland Yard said in a statement: "Police are asking people to avoid the following areas: Parliament Square; Whitehall; Westminster Bridge; Lambeth Bridge; Victoria Street up to the junction with Broadway and the Victoria Embankment up to Embankment tube.

"This is to allow the emergency services to deal with the ongoing incident.

"Officers - including firearms officers - remain on the scene and we are treating this as a terrorist incident until we know otherwise. "We thank the public for their assistance."

Baz, as you say, it's not clear yet if the driver of the car is the same person as the man who has stabbed or struck a policeman and has been shot.

Hopefully it was just one El...and he's been shot ....but I'm guessing they aren't taking any chances ..hence them keeping everything in lockdown

I have seen enough now Baz and probably have all the info as it stands so will look for something else on the TV and carry on clearing out old paperwork.

Police statement on TV now. Officer saying four dead now, although he's said nothing else about the other two. Edit - Apparently the other two died on the bridge

When we visited the Palace of Westminster we were chatting before we left.

One of the policemen approached us and said he was from the North East too.

We tend to forget they are people - he was a very nice guy

REXI - if you don't mind me asking ... how did they come to live in London?

Very jellus

Well, in a nutshell, they ran away from controlling mummy!

It's one of those 'how does that make you feel moments'!!

And also, they are not responsible for, yet they benefit from the will of their 96 year Old grandfather
