Bonkers down here...Tesco is decimated, yet a couple of miles up the road both Iceland and B and M have loo rolls and tissues etc, only thing you can't get is hand gel and if you run out it's easy to make your own if you have to

I have to say though that it was also very noticeable that the shop had more people than usual out in the aisles refilling the shelves: at least for the time-being, it seems to be more a matter of logistics in getting the stock out there than actual shortages...

I prefer not to think about the selfish people who denude the shelves and steal hand gel....the worst kind of humans. In the UK ,how our beleaguered NHS is expected to cope with this pandemic is beyond me. Two hospitals in my area are facing closure because there aren't enough doctors to staff them...let alone nurses where there is a huge shortage too. Retired healthcare professionals are being asked to return to work..the ones I know are refusing as they are in the vulnerable age bracket.

My son in South Korea says that most of the newly qualified nurses...2000 of them have volunteered to go to the worst areas and stay there until the epidemic is over...as they are young, and without families they are best placed to do this

So far there has been colossal mismanagement .....people flying in from Italy not being screened and returning home to infect others has been the main source of the virus getting established

Today a friend who is a teacher rang 111 as she had symptoms of a dry sore throat and feverishness ...it took an hour and twenty minutes to get through

she was told to carry on as normal (back to the classroom) and they would ring back in 4 hours. They did not ring back.

Ok money is now being put in but its a bit late as the horse has bolted

RIGHT - Boris saying many people will die has freaked me out

So i've gone online and paid the Council Tax in full to avoid the Post Office

Shopping online only next week

Prescriptions from the GP and delivery all online too

I'm avoiding going out at all if i can

Saint

I think that Boris's speech has made everyone panic as it seems that the Government is not doing nearly enough. I've been at my local farm shop this morning and the car park was full...never seen this before even at Christmas as car park is enormous. But unlike Christmas nobody spoke  it was like walking into a silent movie. But you could cut the tension with a knife...especially when one man coughed . It's going to be around for a while and people are already realising that we have to help each other as the ones in power aren't.Groups are being set up to shop for people and provide support in so many different ways. The sun is coming out properly next week. Make sure you get vitamin D from it Sainty

Amythist

I was reading an idea someone came up with on twitter.

The first hour of opening, make sure all handles, taps, toilets are cleaned with antibacterial wipes, sprays etc that kills the Coronavirus  and let the elderly and high risk groups shop alone for the first hour. I really haven't thought this through to be honest, although it sounds a great idea to me on first reading it.

I'm getting more annoyed at selfish people panic buying and not giving two hoots for those that can not afford to do the same and why are they doing this? If everyone bought normally, on line deliveries could cope normally if you can't get to supermarkets

Dame_Ann_Average

I know I keep banging on about South Korea, but my son keeps me updated and its widely reported as the most successful country in the world at dealing with it. So why is the UK risking and sacrificing lives following a contentious scientific theory than a strategy that is working in the world right now. Because the SK govt is running things so well people are calm and not resorting to panic buying and hand gel hysteria.

Amythist

It's the same everytime a 'crisis' situation happens. We have generated a very uncaring society and (mostly) no-one gives two hoots about anyone else. Even the government, as demonstrated by the fact that charities are PERMANENTLY factored into our financial system.

The CDC have released a report saying with no intervention, still not happening at the direction of the White House, they expect 200 million to be infected here and 40 million to die. This is a much higher mortality rate than elsewhere and based on the demographics and infrastructure. There are tens of millions of illegal migrants here who won’t go to the doctor and tens of millions  or more with no insurance who can’t  afford to go. There are a very low number of hospital beds in the country and only ten percentage of these are critical care. You don’t get much sick time here typically six days a year and can be sacked for exceeding that. My husband has already been warned (Thursday) that three violations of this rule and you are out.

My immune system is compromised and I have chronic asthma. Now I can’t fly home. I am starting to think I never will. One day at a time...

2. We are in the second phase of the government's response

The government has published its action plan for dealing with the virus, which involves three phases - contain; delay; mitigate - alongside ongoing research.

While the emphasis has been on the contain and research phases up until this week, the country has now moved to the "delay" phase to stop the wider spread of the virus.

Graphic showing the phases of the government's response to coronavirus. Containment phase: prevent disease taking hold; Delay phase: slow spread of virus; Mitigation phase: ensure treatment for most sick; Research phase: ongoing

Personally I think the Contain and Delay phases should have been combined and run together from the start!

A tweet. Don't know if it's true but if it is, what have we become

Mayhem at our local ASDA in Walton, as a woman is stabbed, allegedly for her bog roll. My daughter was in the shop. Police, ambulance, the works. Perp apprehended by a member of the public.

Sprout

Well, nothing as dramatic at my local shop, thankfully.

I was a little concerned however that some of the more recent emptied shelves were of perishables - particularly eggs and bread. The lad at the checkout was telling me people were stocking up on those large trays of eggs.

I do wonder if people have thought about how many they're actually going to use, though: not only could it cause shortages, but they're also looking at a lot of waste...

Eugene's Lair

Yes, it is, shall we say unfortunate, that this virus has emerged at a time when lots of people are getting colds and flu anyway.

Is it a heavy cold or a mildish dose of CovID-19?

There we go. Moving into stronger tactics. I would like to self isolate for about 2 months, if nothing more than to sort out some paperwork, catalogue my CD's and catch-up on lots of missed tellybox.

The positive is that they are saying that fatalities are generally low.

I’ve been trying hard not to panic but, after hearing the Deputy Chief Medical Officer yesterday, saying diabetics (hubby) and people with compromised immune systems (me) are in the high risk groups and will probably need to be on lockdown for 12 weeks, I did get into a panic.
My 81 year old parents will also be on lockdown in a different town from us so that is another worry. We spent most of yesterday trying to put things in place so they will be okay. Scary times.
