did you not put any netting over it??  I usually put strawberry netting.  Did you scarify the patch first and put some holes in with a garden fork? 

 

Scarifying gets rid of any moss or naff grass, the holes allows the water to soak through and the netting puts the birds off

It's only little circles, where Keira has weed and scorched the grass, so I didn't think it was worth netting it - wrong!
