Nine of us went last June - a wide age range 71 down to 9 - and had a wonderful holiday in Bitez. It's between Bodrum (lovely place for a day's meandering around the shops, visiting the castle etc and Gumbet (hideous 18-30 place I'd avoid like the plague!!).

We booked through Thomsons and stayed at the Sestra Apartments - though you can book directly I believe. Staff there were absolutely great.

We also had a fantastic day on a gulet - diving off the boat and eating a glorious bbq'd lunch moored just off the coast.

Indeed! it's safer to enjoy Turkish culture in Germany.

I'm thinking of going to Turkey this year on holiday for the first time. Does anyone know the best place for 40+'s who hate lager louts and like a peaceful hotel/apartment but a resort that's not just a handful of bars and shops - has a bit to offer without being too over the top?
From your spec, think you might really like Fethiye, ...avoid Marmaris, Bodrum, Kusadasi, Side....there are also loads of lovely 'smaller' resorts which are free of larger louts like Kalkan, Kas and Yalikavak, but they may be a bit too small for you??? Sorry to disagree with earlier poster, but doubt Hisaranou would fit the bill for you

Any ideas?

Depends where you go Kel- it's a big country and most of the 'up-market resorts' know that Brits don't want to be hassled/harrassed and therefore leave you alone. Unfortunately some Brit women of a certain age have got us a bad reputation out there- on hol looking for a Turkish toyboy and dropping their knickers at the drop of a hat! I've been many, many times and have relatives living out there, always find the locals v friendly and if you say 'No' they respect that

I've been to Turkey and would reccomend Icemeler Thumbs Up. A quiet resort the pubs etc shut at 12 because of the rules by the Government but the pubs in the hotel etc are still open after then. Marmaris the local town is about 10-15 minutes away but is a party place, gets loads of visitors though. Bodrum in Altinkum is cool too Nod.

Think all of these places cater more for younsters/party animals Darlo- not the impression I got of what boltonfan was looking for? Bt maybe I'm wrong

Icemeler isn't a party place i've been there 2 years in a row Wink, it's quiet. Marmaris is only good for visiting I think but it depends what people want.

My first time in Icemeler- 1982! Only 6 people on the beach and 1 small hotel - Marmaris was lovely then too! Got the impression Icemeler had got big and a bit 'brash' with English bars/food/karaoke and bingo etc. but to be fair, haven't been there for years, just what people have told me.

Oh right Thumbs Up, it's best sometimes not to go what by people say until you have seen for yourself, then you can make your own mind up Smiler.
Does that mean it hasn't got big, got karaoke bars etc. Darlo?

It's got the Bars and Resturants etc but they have to shut at midnight every day. Music has to be turned down too. Loads of people visit Icemeler in the day as all the shops are open, but if you want to have a good time on the night then Marmaris is the place as thats open 24/7.
