The Beeb is saying he'll announce he's stepping down 'soon' rather than immediately.

Speakers are supposed to give up their constituency seat and they normally take up a seat in the House of Lords. I think they also get a kickback of around ÂĢ100K at the end of the term.

If he gives up his seat then there will be a by-election and NuLabour really don't want that now. I think this is what the 'soon' is all about. Watch out too for the ÂĢ100K golden handshake thingy and whether he takes up his seat in the Lords.

If he's going to go then he should go immediately, give up his seat and the ÂĢ100K, and not go into the Lords under the circumstances. Anything else is pander-politics.

Couldn't agree more.

He will probably be off to the Lords to collect even more from the public purse....while he nods off in his seat. Big Grin
