A 4-year-old boy flashes a huge grin as he tucks into a warmonigiri rice ball at a shelter in Minamisanriku,a town in Miyagi Prefecture that was devastated by tsunami on March 11. The town had a pre-quake population of 18,000. Some 7,000 residents are staying in shelters. The first hot food in days helped alleviate miserable living conditions exacerbated by a lack of stable water and power supplies. The hot miso soup and warm rice balls were provided by a volunteer group.
