I take it you have unplugged your router & replugged ?

Am baffled...

My middle name is 'unplugged', slim.  It's driving me mad because I thought this couldn't happen with a secure connection.

I know my internet is misbehaving because of the strong winds, but I would think about contacting my provider if I were you....it might be that yours has become unsecure which would leave your data open to public viewing ??

Is that on the bottom right? If so, when it does this, it never shows my wifi, only the ones which must be close to me, some secured, some not, all BT.

hover over your wifi connection at the bottom Col, it should give you choices

I had a problem getting online last year, and rang my isp Plusnet who talked me through what to do. Can't remember the exact details sorry. They asked which router lights were on or flashing. Somehow they reset the connection by telling me to type stuff into the website box thingy, then to unplug the router from the phone line and reconnect it etc. Need to have your broadband password ready and also security key [should be on the bottom of the router].

Before that Cologne, have you tried resetting the router yourself by pressing the reset button or by switching it off and on? Wait a few mins til the lights settle down. Or check that the filter is correctly plugged in at the socket and doesn't have any nicks  in it?

Dame, when I'm on like now, it shows my provider first, but then suddenly I get thrown out , I re-plug everthing and sometimes it takes a couple of hours for the BT Fon to hang around at the top of the wifi connections and it doesn't show talktalk at all.

Cologne that sounds similar to my problem, My wifi was on the list, but showed as unconnected and other wifis went to the top. Sounds like it might be a problem on their side?

Cologne, it may be that your TalkTalk wifi connection is getting interference from neighbours who are using BT which has a stronger signal than TalkTalk. Changing the channel the router uses may help - TalkTalk should be able to tell you how to do this. If that doesn't solve the problem your options may be either to change your provider to BT (or Virgin if that's an option) or to switch to a wired connection if that is practical.

I think El Loro is right about having your router channel changed Col, I would call Talk Talk and ask them to direct you through the steps.
