A police hunt is under way after a young boy was reportedly seen being taken into a van in Surrey.

The child, aged six or seven, is believed to have been taken into a modified black Volkswagen van in Redstone Hill, Redhill.

A member of the public told Surrey Police they saw the boy being taken at 16:43 BST. A bike, believed to belong to the child, was left at the scene.

Officers and a police helicopter are searching the area.

The child is described as white, approximately 4ft (1.2m) tall, and was wearing a red T-shirt and navy blue jeans.

The modified VW Transporter had three alloy wheels, with one front nearside missing, no rear windows, a sliding side door and chrome sidesteps.

So presumably a hoax then... it's better than the alternative mind you.

I agree Roger it is.

But I also think it is extremely serious what he has done (if proven to be the case) particularly as all of the resources and money that will have been ploughed into investigating the allegation could have been spent on other unsolved and present cases. For that reason alone I feel he should be given a hefty fine and a jail term - a message needs to be sent out to people who are stupid enough to think that making hoax calls are just a bit of harmless fun.
