Cos it is seriously doing my eyes in....on my PC thankfully it doesn't show up but that is running slow cos its scanning and I'm on the sons laptop today instead.

The background doesn't effect me whatsoever 
Its much better than all the little flowers covering the background.
Not sure you could turn it off.
The bright white background with the flowers....
I cannot stand white cos its just too bright.

Me too Ev, all I have is a little bit of briskets avi on the edge, I'm finding it easy on the eyes

I don't think you can turn it off Croc. I think that it's put there by the site leaders/creators.

Well I went on holiday to Cornwall at the end of May but have been back for 3 weeks now.

Ah right, it must be the browser your using! I found with internet Explorer the same happened to me, and you could see it through the posts as well, quite distracting.
Not sure how it can be changed, hopefully someone can tell us. I just changed to google chrome.

On the plus side this laptop is loads quicker than my pc which I think is on its way to dying!

I've got it on my iphone and your right it doesn't show up there...but its not as easy to have multitabs open and switch between them on there.
I can confirm that there is no way to turn off the background. Sorry, Croc!
I have to say that I'm finding the solid white background really dazzling, and it's not really a solution to turn down the brightness because it makes all my other tabs and Word far too dark then. I got to quite like the flowery background, and the flowers and leaves broke up the whiteness enough so that it didn't hurt my eyes.
