Crisis over, thank gawd!  I'd must have inadvertently clicked on something somewhere and the bugga decided to take up residence   A quick click on uninstall in the control panel and by following a few hints on Chrome itself......and voila, sorted.

It was called Bannersurf (for those who might want to know)

Awww. Sweetie. Glad you're sorted. The red circle has ABP in it not ADP. 

It is a very good ad blocking site.
