Just dropped my brother off at the rail station. He's having to catch an earlier train as the one he intended to get was cancelled (yet again). Sadly the concept of a reliable Sunday train timetable is no more.

Summer, you did the right thing in taking Bramble straight to the vet. Could be something she ate, could be heat exhaustion but something would have caused that. I hope that's a one-off

You may remember that I recently posted about a film I'd seen which I didn't enjoy - Love & Friendship. That was based on Jane Austen's early novel Lady Susan.

I don't know if any of you are intending to watch ITV's Vanity Fair starting tonight. That's based on the novel by William Makepeace Thackeray. I have seen a couple of adaptations of that over the years including the Reese Witherspoon film version. The main character in the novel is Becky Sharp. The Reese Witherspoon adaptation is not a true adapatation as Becky Sharp ultimately comes across as a sypathetic character.

The Becky Sharp of the novel is not a sympathetic  character. She's much closer to the Lady Susan of Love & Friendship. Both characters are early examples of the literary anti-heroine.

The most likely Thackeray novel that you would have heard of after Vanity Fair would be The Luck of Barry Lyndon as that was filmed as Barry Lyndon by Stanley Kubrick. Like Vanity Fair, Barry Lyndon (Ryan O'Neal in the film), the main character, is an anti-hero.

Moonie, thanks, we had a good weekend My brother's journey should be alright though take longer as he has to go via Bristol Parkway where he has to change trains. The one going from there to London will be very crowded and it's likely he'll have to stand as the train would be coming from elsewhere and having to take on those additional people such as my brother.

I too remember Dempsey and Makepeace. Michael Brandon and Glynis Barber, the leads, married after the series ended and are still together after nearly 29 years.

 I didn’t know that El

El, glad you had a nice weekend - blood is always thicker than water only some people don't know it. I do

I remember them marrying. Got a few saved off Talking Pics too. See it's on Freeview which says it all - great channel.

Take care all and tread carefully. I'm saying that after a heavy fall in here which was NOT looking good at one point. Invested in an ArcforHealth and it's the best ÂĢ250 ever spent. Google it - they came from ArcforSport.

Love you all more than you'll know. Good over evil

The good news is that I've been able to access the huge client's server and start work on it

Being able to do that took quite some time and lots of phone calls to and from the client.

Client had told me to use the ip address she gave me but that turned out to be wrong (only she can use the one she gave me). Once I had the correct one I was able to get on the server.

Then when I clicked on the accounts icon on the desktop I was told that I didn't have the required permission. That's something for the server administrator to do but that eventually got done.

Then I found that I can't print off to my printer and the client couldn't really help there. I worked out a way round that by creating pdf files, getting those over to my computer, then printing them.

There was a bit of a holdup with getting files on to my computer but between us we sorted that out.

I'm using a USB flash drive as the means of getting files from their server to mine. I set up my desktop connection to the server so that only that drive gets linked to the server. That way seems the most secure way so that the server can't see what's on my main drives.

I know it’s a bit complicated but I’m glad you’ve managed to find a way to get the work done.

Thanks Yogi

As my old computer wasn't connected to any printers, I had used the flash drive to transfer documents in PDF format and spreadsheets from there to my main computer to be able to print off and work on the spreadsheets so the process is much the same.

The flash drive I use is quite old and small capacity (256 mb) but is ideal for this sort of work. No longer available but it's sturdier than most. You can see it:

I've been in touch with my brother and he got home without any problems

Sad to hear that Jacqueline Pearce has died, she was 64. Anyone who watched Blake's 7 will remember her as the evil Supreme Commander Servalan.

Article doesn't mention that she was in a 1966 Hammer horror film called The Reptile. If you were to look at the IMDB page on that film, amongst the photos is one of her as the reptile. To say it's not a pretty sight is an understatment.
