Years ago my mother needed the same treatment for actinic keratosis on an arm. It generally affects fair-skinned people, especially those with blue eyes, red hair, freckles and a tendency to burn easily in the sun. My mother wasn't. It's also more likely where you've been abroad in hotter sunnier countries and my mother never went abroad. But there is a possibility that her skin might have been exposed to arsenic (another cause) at a place she had worked at.

I fit into the fair skinned, freckled, blue eyed category - but my hair was darkest brown/black. The dermatologist has recommended I cover up and wear a wide brimmed hat in the sun, as well as slapping on Factor 50 - especially as one of my tablets makes me more susceptible to skin cancer.
