Oliver Murs’ audition prompted Simon Cowell to give the easiest YES he has ever had to make. We caught up with the overwhelmed Essex lad immediately after his performance to get his reaction.

“When I walked out on to that stage and saw 2,500 people, I thought wow, this aint like a Friday night down the pub! I’m in a couple of bands back home but we only play around the pubs in Essex… and never to audiences that big!”

Olly admits to being a little overawed when he first took to the stage stating: “When I eventually got out there Simon asked me a few questions and I didn’t know what I was saying – I was all over the gaff!”

But luckily for Olly, the judges and the audience weren’t there to listen to him talk - they’d come to hear him sing - and when the familiar bass line of Stevie Wonder’s Superstition kicked in, and Olly began to wiggle his hips, it became clear something memorable was about to take place.

“When Simon said ‘that was the easiest YES I’ve ever had to make’ I just didn’t know what to say,” Olly’s eyes well-up at the memory: “Look at me!” he says laughing: “I feel so emotional just thinking about it!”

Olly works for an energy saving company, but it’s not what he wants to do, he has his sights set elsewhere.

“My job involves giving people advice on how to save money on their energy bills, but it’s not where I want to be… I want to be a star!

“I want to be a recording artist, I want to be on TV, I want to be singing, entertaining people – the lot! I want to be a popstar, I always have… and now I feel I’m that little bit closer to becoming one.”

And you’ll be a lot closer still if you carry on producing performances like that!
