Fluffy, for the Grand Slam events, there are 128 players in the singles. Those include 8 wildcards and 12 qualifiers. That leaves 108 players who go in by virtue of their ranking. So it's players outside the top 108 who would go throught the qualifiers. The figure of 108 doesn't take into account players who have a protected ranking or any who are unable to compete due to illness, etc.

Heather Watson and Katie Swan have won their first qualifying round matches this morning.

Although Katie Boulter has withdrawn from the French Open due to a back injury she's been included in the main draw. It's unclear as to why, possibly that she may have left her name in the draw accidentally. She could be given about ÂĢ20k prize money as a result - someone who withdraws gets half of that round's prize money.

Katie Swan lost her third qualifying match so Johanna Konta is the only Brirish woman in the main draw of the singles of the French Open.

Katie Boulter went to Roland Garros to watch Katie Swan and to collect that ÂĢ20k - she has said "I was still hoping to have a chance of competing but doctors have advised me not to take a risk."

I don't know if Heather Watson will be in the women's doubles - that draw doesn't get made until some time next week - she's not seeded for that.

Johanna Konta has won her first round match at the French Open. 2 set win over German world number 147 Antonia Lottner. It's the first time she's won a match in the main draw in the French Open. Second round opponent is Lauren Davis who is ranked 111 but was given a wildcard to the main draw due to recent good performances on clay.

Johanna Konta beat Lauren Davis in 3 sets even though she had been feeling sick since Sunday. Her third round opponent is Slovakia's Viktoria Kuzmova, ranked 46th, on Friday. It was expected to have been Kiki Bertens but she had to retire from her match through sickness. Looks as it there's a sickness bug at Roland Garros.

Heather Watson's doubles match is scheduled at the end of today,

Johanna Konta became the first British woman to reach the French Open last 16 since 1983 after thrashing Slovakia's Viktoria Kuzmova at Roland Garros. In 1983 it was Anne Hobbs and Jo Durie who did with Jo Durie reaching the semi finals.

Konta, 28, continued her fine clay-court season with a 6-2 6-1 late-evening victory on the new Court Simonne-Mathieu.

Despite suffering sickness this week, the 26th seed broke serve five times to seal an impressive win in 54 minutes.

Konta will play Croatia's 24th seed Donna Vekic on Sunday.

The 4 quarter finals:

Madison Keys (14, US) v Ashleigh Barty (8, Aus)
Simona Halep (3, Rom) v Amanda Anisimova (US)
Sloane Stephens (7, US) v Johanna Konta (26, GB)
Marketa Vondrousova (Cze) v Petra Martic (31, Cro

The semi finals will be between the winners of the first two quarter finals and the winners of the last two.

The numbers shown are the seeded numbers which are also the current rankings. They are based on the results of the last 12 months. If one looks at the Porsche Race rankings (based on just the current season to date) it shows a rather different position:
Madison Keys 26 / Ashleigh Barty 6
Simona Halep 7 / Amanda Anisimova 29
Sloane Stephens 21 / Johanna Konta 13
Marketa Vondrousova 16 / Petra Martic 22

The organisers have now scheduled both semi finals for Friday. As more rain is forecast that day, they may try to move one of them to another court to see if there's enough time in any dry intervals. It is quite possible that the final will move to Sunday instead of Saturday (with the men's final next Monday instead of Sunday).

Court Philippe Chatrier (the centre court) will be installing a retractable roof in time for next year's tournament.

Johanna Konta's semi final scheduled for an early start tomorrow on Court Simmone-Mathieu. The other semi final starts at the same time on Court Suzanne-Lenglen. The two men's semi finals are on Court Philippe-Chatrier starting at a later time so theoretically after the women's semis are finished but such is the forecast that the timings are just hoped for.

The grass court season starts today with the Nature Valley Open at Nottingham. British players in the main draw are Heather Watson, Harriet Dart, Katie Swan and some others who are lower ranked. Katie Boulter still recovering from back injury and a lesser WTA event than Johanna Konta would be in. Heather Watson, the highest ranked of those, has a tough first round drawn against Maria Sakkari.

With the bad weather forecast this week, it's quite possible that the only games will be indoors There are 11 indoor courts and 16 outdoor ones,

In the Nature Valley Classic Johanna Konta has a trickly first round opponent in the other Konta.. Anett Kontaveit.

Heather Watson has been given a wildcard entry and faces Barbora Strycova as has Harriet Dart who is against Yulia Putintseva. There are some other British players who are in the qualifying rounds which are starting today though it looks as if rain is affecting play.

Harriet Dart didn't win her first round match and Johanna Konta lost her second round match,

Next week is Eastbourne.

The following week is Wimbledon - Heather Watson, Harriet Dart and Katie Swan have been given wildcards for that, Katie Boulter has yet to be fit enough as she hasn't played since April, Johanna Konta of course will be one of the seeds.

For the doubles the most hopeful pair of progressing beyond the first round seem to be Heather Watson & Mandy Minella of Luxembourg drawn against Raquel Atawo & Lyudmyla Kichenok though they are lower in the rankings.

The drawn for the mixed doubles is made on July 3rd. Too soon to know if Heather Watson will be with Henri Kontinen again. Haven't heard if Andy Murray has decided on a mixed doubles partner.

El Loro

Laura Siegemund beat Katie Swan 6-2, 6-4.
Johanna Konta then beat Ana Bogdan 7-5, 6-2.

So 3 of the Brits survive to the second round.

Tomorrow Heather Watson's match is the first on Court 1. She's against Anett Kontaveit, the 20th seed so a tough match. They've met 4 times before each winning twice but never on grass.
