I can't watch Big Week at the Zoo. Tonight's episode contains an item about looking after the only polar bears still in captivity in this country. Many many years ago when I was young we would go to Bristol Zoo for a day each year. Then as I got a bit older I observed something at the polar bear enclosure which really disturbed me. I think my father realised that something was not right and we never went again. As an adult I was able to check this out and it confirmed what I thought.

I hope you enjoy the programme but I couldn't.

I agree that somethings about zoos are not ideal El....although I think they have got a lot better ...or at least some of them have...especially those like the Bronx Zoo . I’m not sure what it is you’re getting at , but I’ll keep my eyes open However , I do think that they have a place in conservation and breeding  ....especially of some of the most endangered species

Baz, I could post a Youtube clip to show what I meant but it's too depressing. It's possible that the programme might make some reference to what I'm referring to.

I should say that the only polar bears in the UK are now at Yorkshire Wildlife Park as far as I'm aware so their living conditions years ago when I was a child is no longer the case - at least in the UK.

I share your concern about polar bears in captivity.

As a child I saw a polar bear at Edinburgh Zoo (it might have been Glasgow) and even as a child I could see it was obviously unhappy and stressed. I remember my animal loving dad being annoyed too.

I think there are still polar bears in the Highland Wildlife Park but conditions are massively different from the old zoos.
