I agree cags.. and I'm sure it's not helping the unsettled atmosphere.  it's like kids pushing boundaries now.

Cags, Ted did explain the 'whys' on p 6 of this thread, essentially: having given us a refuge when C4 closed down and the fact that they are in the US and we are in the UK, that they now want us to take some responsibility for management of the site i.e. some people to help out as moderators, covering whatever hours they can manage. He also stated that in their extensive experience, that the best forums build their moderators from within. Re whether it is Gaga or the whole site, I think that GaGa is the 'whole site' now and given that Ted said that they thought they could 'grow' the site, then I assume he means all of GaGa, not just the BB part.

Having said all of that, it is dragging on a bit now, is almost two weeks since that post, and, whilst I understand that our little forum is unlikely to be a business priority, it is obviously making some fms feel a little unsettled as to what's happening and when.

Me: I'm not particularly keen on the idea, but I can also see that they're a business not a charity and therefore will make business decisions, some of which won't be that popular with all of their 'customers.' From the outset I've been pretty resigned to the fact that this is about 'when' rather than 'if' however there doesn't appear to have been too many volunteers, (unless people have offered privately,) so maybe that's what's causing the delay/ problem in getting back to us?

this statement of Ted's is all well and good and probably applies to a lot of forums started from scratch but, and tis a big but.. this forum wasn't built from scratch it was built in one go with an already established community with grievances long held and still being held now.. as the recent thread shows. . so maybe the usual model for a a forum doesn't apply here no matter how 'adult' we all are..

in fact there are only two members that I can think of that were completely new to all of us, James is one who, having being a former LiveCloud user happened upon us as we moved over, and ickleditty I think was a new member as well having not been on C4 BB Forums... we haven't got any new people since. .we may have got new usernames but no new people..  and I don't care what anybody says about that last sentence.. deny or whatever but I still feel that is the case..  IMHO of course

anyway tis why it would not be a good idea for any of us to Moderate here.. too much long held history   . .

Hi...been a while since I posted, couldn't even remember me log in for a while , but I'm gonna stick me oar in any how   I don't see the problem with old c4 peeps moderating.  Surely all old arguments are well in the past now?  C4 was three years ago, as far as I remember from the beginning of Gaga, there were a few teething problems, but they're all gone now, aren't they?  You're all getting on well now?  If people are still holding old grievances, just don't have them as mods? lol  What can mods see?

Temps

The old arguments (some of them at least) are in the past but there are new arguments and problems that would make it really difficult for someone from here to mod here. I know I would be rubbish at it and hold my hands up

Fluffy is a good choice but regardless of how well she does the job there will still be mutterings about how she does it.

Nature of the beast I'm afraid

Veggie I happen to think you would make a very good mod.

Thanks Aquarius ( I think xx) but I wouldn't be good at all - not on here. I've modded on other forums and it's been no hassle even on a football forum where it can get scarily nasty but here is different.

One thing that will be needed here if they do engage fms as mods is a very clear laying out of the rules and an absolute requirement that all mods are singing from the same hymn sheet which is very difficult on matters that are not clearcut.

As we saw from the locked thread here, we all see things differently. What someone sees as robust argument by several, another will see as ganging up.

Plus what about fms you know are posting under new ids when their old ones have been banned? A mod would have a requirement to deal with that, surely, whereas most of us ignore it if we know someone has re-regged as long as they are not doing the stuff that got them banned in the first place.

I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to be even handed when dealing with fms who have a history of unpleasant behaviour and I'm not sure many people would

I thought that we were just GaGa now Fluffs: BB, The Lounge, Games, Brisket memorial film forums, and loads of other bits n bobs that nobody much ever goes into?

In some ways I find this thread amusing. I bet Seattle never expected all this lol. Having been a member of quite a few Forums over the years whether UK, US, or Ozzie based there have been times when a Forum would either announce a new Mod had been chosen by the Admin, or would ask for volunteer Mods to cover different time zones. Never once have I seen anything like a 12 page discussion lol. In both circumstances whoever's been chosen all I've ever seen is messages of Congratulations to the new Mod.

This place is unique that's for sure...imho, and experience. Tbh I feel quite sorry for Seattle lol.

Yellow Rose

Hello again everyone-

To answer one question about dialogs... no one can read private dialogs other than the specific people who are participating in the dialogs.  Even a Super Admin (like me) on the site cannot read your dialogs.. there is no secret control panel that supports that.  Thus, no moderator will be able to read anyone else's private dialogs.

As you can see, we are making some changes to the site, including:

-- Some new TV show-specific forums that were requested.

-- New theme

-- New title graphic

-- New Terms of Service (we never had one before).. you'll be asked to agree to it the next time you sign-in, if that has not happened to you already.  This just lays the groundrules for accepted behavior for the site.

-- Behind the scenes, we've created a new Moderators permission group so we can great some powers to all moderators

As stated before, the goal is to make it easier for people to find this site and to feel welcome enough to join.  There will likely be other changes/improvements as we move forward.

The reason we are looking for moderators is that it makes little sense for us to moderate the site.  We really do not see it as our community at all. We tried to do everyone from the old Channel 4 forums a favor by continuing to host the site when they removed their forums, but it is YOUR community and to survive long-term it would be best to start developing some leaders from within the community to keep things on track

I understand there have been some issues between some members, but I am quite confident we can find some helpful people from with the ranks who can be fair.  And if they are not fair, they will not remain moderators.

Being a moderator is not an overwhelming task at all, especially if the community is healthy.  It just means enforcing the community guidelines as best you can.

So to answer one other question about whether the site will close unless we can find some moderators from within the group. I would say that is probably true, though it is certainly not intended as a threat.  And that perspective could always change in the future.

Reading through the entirety of this topic left me with some conflicting ideas of who might be interested, so I would ask now that you send me a dialog if you are still interested in becoming a moderator.  To repeat.. there are no hours you have to work.. it's just a commitment to assist the community whenever and as best you can.  We are hopeful that there will be quite a few of you too.

So, if everything I said makes sense to you and you are willing to become a leader in this community, please send me a dialog so we can discuss!  Final decision(s) will be made by Friday.  Thanks!

Ted O'Neill

If I put myself forward as a moderator I could only do it if others from the forum do it also as I couldn't do it by myself. I try to avoid getting into threads where there is potential conflict so I would try to have a light touch approach rather than saying you're banned. Generally I'm only on the forum during the daytime and early evening so there would need to be other moderators. I don't know if moderators would be able to see personal email addresses, but if they could then they should only ever use them where that is part of their work as moderator.

Go for it, El.

Fluffy has e-mailed Ted to say she is interested, too, so you wouldn't be on your own.

I couldn't think of a better person to moderate.  I hope there will be many others to lighten the load.
