I've been in London for a few days. There were a few men and ladies, staying in the same hotel as us, who had served in the forces during the war and were down for the anniversary of VE Day. Brave people who deserve our thanks and respect.

I'm watching the concert thing on BBC1   - quite enjoying it (even if Elaine Paige seemed to wearing her dressing gown.  Right now Gregory Porter is singing 'As time goes by'   It's fab. 

All the wee films and things too, donks.. can't begin to imagine living through it. 

I had the news on, I've just turned over

Mum's gone now, but Dad did - although he rarely talks about it.  At least here they weren't bombed to bits.  

 

.. and Chris is looking very dapper.

We thoroughly enjoyed that. Both our Dads were heavily involved and are no longer with us. Very very moving indeed.

Both my parents lived through it. Mum was a schoolgirl. Dad left school at 14 and joined the Navy - had to lie about his age to get in.

 

They're both gone now. Dad never spoke much about it. Mum was able to talk a bit more about it, probably because she never had to witness the same level of horror as dad probably did.

Indeed.

I was talking to my mum earlier. She went to a VE dance at a local village which went on into the early hours. She was petrified as she cycled home expecting her Dad to go mental. But he was sat happily in his chair having hit a bottle of whiskey, so pleased that it was over.

Even Liz and Margaret got to let their hair down… apparently

My Dad's youngest sister and the sole survivor out of the six of them ended up in Canada as a result of this sort of fraternisation!

My Grandfather (from Dalmuir) was in the Merchant Navy and served on the North Atlantic convoys throughout the war.

Talking to one of Mum's friends (worked on various projects including Mulberry Harbours) a very sprightly and with it lady not far off 100, who said, "They say if you can remember VE night you weren't really there!"
I thought this a really witty borrowing of the sixties saying!
