Laura Robson secured the biggest win of her career with a shock victory over former world number one Kim Clijsters in round two of the US Open.

Clijsters was hoping to mark her final event before retirement with a fifth major title and a fourth in New York, where she last lost in 2003.

But 18-year-old Robson overpowered the Belgian, 29, to win 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (7-5) in 126 minutes on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The British number three faces Chinese ninth seed Li Na in round three.

Na won the 2011 French Open but is unlikely to faze Robson after this incredible result.

"It was such a good atmosphere," said the Londoner. "I didn't have any expectations because she's so experienced.

"I've had so many tough matches against top players that I knew the level was there, I just had to keep it for the whole match.

"Kim has been such a great player for so many years and a role model for all the younger girls coming up."

Robson gave Maria Sharapova a scare at Wimbledon last year and went one step further against Clijsters.

The world number 89 attacked her 25th-ranked opponent throughout to secure a historic and richly deserved win.

"One of my biggest dreams came true in 2005, winning here," said Clijsters, the 23rd seed. "Every time I came back I was inspired.

"This completely feels like the perfect place to retire. I just wish it wasn't today but there was no doubt in my mind to pick a tournament to play my last singles match.

"Laura played extremely well. I fought and gave it my all but it just wasn't good enough. I look forward to the next part of my life."

Robson's serve was broken in game four of the first set and Clijsters swiftly moved into a commanding position at 5-3.

But that seemed to encourage Robson to go for her shots and two stinging forehands up the line helped her break back.

She pinned Clijsters behind the baseline and hit forehand and backhand winners from all parts to force a tie-break.

Robson continued to pile the pressure on Clijsters, who put a return long to hand over the initiative.

Nerves were evident early in the second set as the Briton sent down a double-fault on break point and Clijsters returned the favour in the very next game.

Both players scrambled out of trouble before a stunning crosscourt backhand gave Robson two match points at 7-6 (7-4) 6-5.

Clijsters held firm with a cool drive volley and ace, yet it was Robson who showed greater composure in the tie-break.

Robson earned a third match point with an unstoppable forehand, and wrapped it up when Clijsters looped a backhand long.

Victory was more evidence of Robson's encouraging relationship with new coach Zeljko Krajan, following an impressive first-round win against Samantha Crawford.

In the second round, Roger Federer beat Bjorn Phau. The second round matches of Djokovic and Ferrer are played today. The biggest shock in the Men's singles is the defeat of Jo-Wilfreid Tsonga by Martin Klizan.

In the women's singles second round matches, wins for Serena Williams and Agnieszka Radwanska. Johanna Konte lost her match.

Key third round games include:

Victoria Azarenka (1) v Jie Zheng (28)

Maria Sharapova (3) v Mallory Burdette

Ekaterina Makarova v Serena Williams (4)

Jalena Jankovic v Agnieszka Radwanska (2)

and Laura Robson is up against Li Na (9) who was Heather Watson's nemesis. If Laura Robson wins she will be the first British woman to get to the 4th round of a grand slam event in 14 years.

El Loro

Djokovic and Ferrer won their second round matches to progress to the third round matches.

Key third rounds matches are:

Federer (1) v Verdasco

Murray (3) v Lopez (30)

Hewitt v Ferrer (4) (if Hewitt loses, this may be his last match as a professional)

Benneteau (31) v Djokovic (2)

Victoria Azarenka won her third round match and will play Andrea Tatishvili in the 4th round. The winner of that match will play the winner of the match between Laura Robson and Sam Stosur (seeded 7).

Maria Sharapova won her third round match and will play Nadia Petrova in the fourth round.

El Loro

Roger Federer had a straight sets win over Fernando Velasco and plays Mardy Fish in the 4th round.

Andy Murray was clearly suffering in his match against Feliciano Lopez but held on to progress to the 4th round. He plays Milos Raonic.

Selena Williams and Agnieszka Radwanska won their matches to move into the 4th round.

Laura Robson's match against Sam Stosur is the last match today on the Louis Armstrong stadium so too late for me to listen to.

El Loro

Disappointment for Laura Robson as she was beaten by Sam Stosur 4-6, 4-6.

Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova won their matches to progress to the quarter finals.

Wins for Ferrer and Djokovic in their third round matches.

Key matches in the 4th round are:

Federer (1) v Fish (23)

Murray (3) v Raonic (15)

Gasquet (13) v Ferrer (4)

Waswrinka (18) v Djokovic (2)

El Loro

The number 2 seed Agnieszka Radwanska was beaten by Roberta Vinci in their 4th round match. Serena Williams won her match.

The women's singles quarter finals are:

Victoria Azarenka (1) v Samantha Stosur (7)

Maria Sharapova (3) v Marion Bartoli (11)

Ana Ivanovic (12) v Serena Williams (4)

Sara Errani (10) v Roberta Vinci (20)

Andy Murray have a much better performance in his 4th round match beating Milos Raonic in straight sets.

Roger Federer had a walk over in his game with Mardy Fish withdrawing for health reasons. Earlier this year Mardy Fish had to have treatment for an accelerated heart beat.

El Loro

In the remaining 4th round match Djokovic beat Wawrinka in straight sets.

So the quarter finals are:

Federer (1) v Berdych (6)

Murray (3) v Cilic (12)

Tipsarevic (8) v Ferrer (4)

Del Potro (7) v Djokovic (2)

Berdych beat Federer 7-6, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to get to the semi-finals. He plays Murray who had looked to be going out having lost the first set and was 1-5 down in the second. Murray came back to win 3-6, 7-6, 6-2, 6-0.

In the women's singles quarter finals, there were wins for each of the higher ranked players with wins for Victoria Azarenka, Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams, and Sara Errani.

So the semi finals will be Azarenka v Sharapova and Williams v Errani. The first of those matches could be quite some match. The second match, Serena Williams must be strong favourite to win, the way she's been playing recently.

El Loro

Djokovic had a straight sets win over Del Potro winning 6-2, 7-6, 6-4. Ferrer beat Tipsarevic 6-3, 6-7, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6.

So the semi finals are:

Berdych (6) v Murray (3)

Ferrer (4) v Djokovic (1)

They will be played tomorrow.

It's the women's semis today.

First will be Victoria Azarenka (1) v Maria Sharapova (3)

followed by Serena Williams (4) v Sara Arrani (10)

El Loro

Victoria Azarenka beat Maria Sharapova 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Her opponent in the final is Serena Williams who beat Sara Arrani 6-1, 6-2.

Although Serena Williams is seeded lower than Victoria Azarenka, Serena Williams must be favourite to win based on her recent performance and that in past meetings between the two, she has won 9 out of 10.

The matches today on the Arthur Ashe stadium are scheduled to start at 4pm UK time.

Firstly the Berdych/Murray match, then the Ferrer/Djokovic match, followed by Azarenka/Williams.

This year, they have one win each, both on hard courts. I really hope Murray can get through this one.

Correction - Berdych's win this year was Monte Carlo, on clay.

Wild weather in New York today, Murray and Berdych have already suffered a rain delay, and the 5Live team were evacuated from their commentary position for a tornado warning!

As it was, Murray and Berdych were able to play their match, though in extremely windy conditions with hats and equipment being blown about, and it made it difficult to play. Murray lost the first set, won the next 2, but in the 4th it went to a tie break and at one point Berdych looked as if he would win the tie break, but in the end Murray won. This will be the 5th grand slam final Murray has reached.

The other semi-final between Djokovic and Ferrer was suspended due to severe weather warning about a coming tornado. Ferrer had been serving for the first set leading 5-2.

The men's final will now be played on Monday. The weather forecast in New York seems to be sunny and calmer today and tomorrow, so the remaining matches should not need to be delayed.

Kyle Edmund of Britain has won the boys double title with Frederico Ferreira Silva.

Liam Broady has reached the boys single final where he will play Filip Peliwo.

Well done to them
