Do celebrities get paid for going on Twitter?

If they don't, why do they do it?..To me it is obvious that they are going to get people tweeting them with applause for every "Motion" they have, but they must also understand that others are going to complain that it is just poo.  And there are the few that have a screw loose that will threaten to do all sorts to obstruct their plumbing.

 Why do they Twitter?

Some do actually get paid for promoting stuff on Twitter.

Also, there are some genuine, practical uses: for example if you're - say - a musician or comedian, it's a quick and easy way of distributing information about gigs, singles, DVDs etc to those who are interested.

However, I think it's mainly about self-promotion: it's a very simple method of free publicity. And once you get passed the few practical uses, the main concept of Twitter is, let's face it, pretty narcissistic and self-centred, which makes it pretty much essential for many celebrities...

I like it, and have about 150 followers and am following about 160.  I follow my fave celebs and also people and organisations I find interesting, and I have about 50 people that I know in real life...

Beware of people who just randomly 'follow,' as they will wait for you to follow, then a day or two later, they will 'unfollow.' Just like facebook, some people are desperate to have 1000s and 1000s of followers/friends, even if they are people they don't know, and having say 300 followers and only following 100 'themselves;' makes them feel important because they have more following THEM than who they are following.

If you think you may have lost a follower, just google 'who unfollowed me on twitter,' and it tells you, and so you can return the favour!

I don't get the popularity of Twitter, either.  Full of self-obsessed celebs sprinkling little flakes of their lives, like dandruff, onto the eager upturned faces of their fans and who think that the whole world is desperate to know that they have just had a Marmite sandwich or are stuck in the queue for the check-out in Waitrose etc.

That's basically  my take on it too Avalon... that or celebs slagging each other off. I tried it for a few weeks, and then deregged. But I guess it's horses for courses.....

Yes, Baz - some folk find it quite addictive, I believe.

I do! He hasn't impressed me so far....he's a bit quiet (or two busy) But then I followed Ricky Gervais under the same premise.... and he was incredibly irritating and tweeted TOO much.   So I've decided I like my Twitter celebs on the quiet side.

The only thing I've found to be worth following is BGT. It's great getting updates from behind the scenes during the auditions. Makes me excited for it to start
