You would have to be a simpleton not to realise what is happening to the NHS Fluffy, it's being sold off in large chunks.

the NHS in Cumbria is in total chaos, I would be lucky to get to a suitable hospital in the golden hour if anything serious happened to me. the lack of services in a county that covers 2.500 thousand miles is  appalling, we don't even have any police in our town...Three weeks waiting list to see a doctor, one doctor at my local surgery took early retirement to save money for the surgery after the latest round of cuts....I can confirm I hate the Tories  but when you have 70 Tory MP's with their fingers in private health firm pies you expect nothing else really

Hawking - celebrity hungry media whore can't stop himself grabbing for the headlines.

He's said we'll all need to leave Earth and resettle on another planet soon.

Rubbish - and he knows it.

Now the NHS.

Whipping up more concern, that's already there, for media attention.

I think he enjoys scaring people for his face in the papers.

What suddenly makes him an expert on health care?

I am utterly shocked and stunned and despair at this post (including the highlighted part)

An eminent scientist to have got where he's got despite his condition and you deride him like that.

I wonder Saint? have you actually read the article that Fluffs posted?

I'm gobsmacked, he didn't give an interview, this is a speech he his giving at  Cambridge University and a media whore is the last thing I would call Stephen Hawking.

For his thoughts on climate change, he's bang on we are killing the planet. He also has a right to comment on the NHS which is being run into the ground, I think 50 years of living with Motor Neuron Disease gives him a very good idea of what is happening in the NHS.

You can confuse caring to scare mongering if you want, but ignoring it certainly won't help the NHS or ruining the planet not talking about climate change.

Isn't it interesting that it's always him who's in the headlines.

Where are the other eminent scientists and their views? Or is it that they go about their good work without all the spin and soundbites.

He said we will have to abandon Earth and resettle on a nearby planet.

That will never happen - more sensationalism for attention.

Are you for real?

I get you don't care for him much, but I think this and your previous post comments are a bit OTT.

Of course he has Motor Neurone disease - Do you think he goes around in a wheelchair and talks via a speech synthesizer for fun?

Surely you know Sainty well enough after all these years to know that he wasn't being serious about Stephen Hawking not having MND?

I have no problem with anyone offering their opinion, so long as they realise their opinion has no more validity than anyone else's - and that includes Stephen Hawking's opinion of the Tory Government and the NHS.

Inferring that Stephen Hawking is a scrounger and malingerer whilst suffering from an illness that robs you of everything except your mind is wrong on so many levels. There is absolutely nothing funny about your replies  and I was more shocked you found it something that you can take the p*ss out of.

You really do have a problem don't you?   I don't call that humour. I think it's sick. How do you know that there aren't FM's on here that have relatives that have that condition. That could be deeply offensive to them.

And as for Little Britain, just because they do it (and I'm not condoning them) you don't have to copy.

FM

Humour is a very subjective thing, so what one person finds hilarious, another will find "sick".

It's well known that people who live or work in incredibly difficult situations often resort to black humour as a coping mechanism - it doesn't mean they are cold or heartless.

I am irritated at the, "I am offended on behalf of an imaginary person who may (or may not!) be offended" nonsense .

You may think, "You are irritated - so what!" Well, you are offended - so what!

I leave you a quote by Stephen Fry, on the subject of "being offended", and I have deleted part of the swear word to avoid upsetting those who find swearing offensive:

“It's now very common to hear people say, 'I'm rather offended by that.' As if that gives them certain rights. It's actually nothing more... than a whine.

'I find that offensive.' It has no meaning; it has no purpose; it has no reason to be respected as a phrase. 'I am offended by that.' Well, so ****ing what."

The NHS has become a juggernaut ...and gone way beyond anything it's founding father (s) ever envisioned ! Medicine has , in many ways,  become the victim of its own success and we are left with an economic , logistical and bureaucratic nightmare ! As I posted earlier , and despite views to the contrary , this is not a new thing , it's been steadily declining for at least 4 decades . I don't have the answers , I'm not that clever   However, it doesn't take a genius to know that it will NEVER get sorted out ( if it can be ) while it is used as a political football by every successive government or party ....;and you'd think that the so called intelligentsia would know that !! And the more anarchical and divisive our politics gets the worse things will become .

That is very true Yogi19. I find it occurs reasonably regularly in my profession. The irony is that despite some of the black humour or gallow humour found in my line of work, we regularly stop, prevent ongoing or future pain and suffering.

That is what Labour supporters tend to do.  If Hawking thought the Tories were great he'd be a Tory!  You know, like  Clarkson, Jim Davidson, Baronesse Bra and the repugnant Katie Hopkins

Yogi19: Tory supporter dismisses criticism by a considerable intellectual superior to him/herself and someone who has first hand experience of the NHS and appreciates its role in his life.  But hey, Yogi19 thinks Hawking's views are invalid because he recently came out in favour of Labour.

Are Tory voters the only 'legitimate' critiques of this minority government?

Have you ever thought that the reason Hawking doesn't support your favourite party on this is because he understands and has first hand experience of what the NHS has done for him and the dangers in flogging it all off to private concerns?

2. I'm female, and miaow, you need to be careful, your claws are showing.

3. If you knew anything about me - which you obviously don't - you'd know I have had almost two decades of first hand experience of the NHS for a chronic and debilitating illness. I grant you, nothing as horrendous as MND but I am not without experience of the failings of the NHS - under both Labour and Tory governments.

4. No and I never said they were.

5. I'm sure he has several reasons for his political party of choice, as do most people.
