Apparently there was a lot of late betting on this one.

New Who showrunner is Chris Chibnall, so there was a lot of speculation that the new Doctor would not only be female, but an actress from Broadchurch, which he created - hence Olivia Colman, Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Jodie Whittaker all being amongst the favourites.

@El Loro;

I was originally surprised when Phoebe Waller-Bridge was an early favourite, as she still wasn't very well known, and she's likely to be very busy with Series 2 of "Fleabag" and the Young Han Solo movie. Then I realised that Chris Chibnall created "Broadchurch".

With the exception of Tilda Swinton (who's been a fan-favourite as a potential female doctor for many years now), virtually every actress being hyped for the role has previously appeared on "Broadchurch"...

Be interested to see how this works.  I'll be honest, I did want it to be a man - old habits die hard I guess, but I'll give this a go.  She must be a good actress - my niece dropped in to visit this afternoon and was here when it announced .  Our first thoughts were 'WTF?   She's far too downtrodden and morose to be the Doctor' - then we reminded ourselves that she wasn't actually the mother of a murdered child.

It was popcorn time on the Mail Online as the rightie thin skinned snowflakes spat out their vitriol.

It's amazing that a group who coined the expression 'snowflake' get so riled by such ephemera as the next Dr Who.  Righties are so thin skinned you can see their internal organs.

On a separate non political point, I'm indifferent.  I think Chris Marshall would have made a good Dr Who.  Peter Capaldi isn't everyone's cup of tea but I think he'll be a hard act to follow.  I thought he was really good in the role.

I only watched the first series of Broadchurch and thought it really good but the actress to play Dr Who didn't stand out.  I tried watching the second series but gave up on it and didn't bother with series 3.

Ultimately it will depend on the scripts, the actress and supporting cast.  She comes with general good recommendations so I'll just have to keep an open mind and see.

Best comment I saw on Twitter was 'so you're ok with a time travelling alien that can die and regenerate, but you can't handle it as a woman'?

Jury's out for me - but I'm happy to be convinced  - the only casting I've hated since the resurrection of the series was Katherine Tate.

I must say that I have not seen any of the last series for one reason or another I drifted away. Must say that I was not keen on the introduction of that rotund, bald comedian who's name escapes me.

As for a woman, I should not have any complaints really, after all, this is an alien lifeform that can (presumably) take any shape or form, not just a recognisable humanoid - although, someone who is well versed in Whovian Lore may correct me on that.

The TV 'Ad' for the 13th Doctor was a bit strange in one way, her expression was somewhat odd when seeing the TARDIS.

I don't know this actress but would have liked to have seen Rachel Riley in the role.

I probably regards Matt Lucas in the same way people regard Mrs Tate, I'm not keen so adds nothing to the show for me. I guess it's each to their own tastes.

I'm at work, so don't have time to Google stuff.

I'm definitely not Googling "I thought Timelords on had a certain number of regenerations".

That would do it - although I was never a fan of him either in Little Britain, but the character grew on me.

Much the same, although she grew on me.  That series opener with those little bits of fat (the Adipose) was utterly dire but over the series she improved considerably.  I also thought Jenna Coleman's Clara Oswald character was quite annoying at first only for her character to blossom when working with Peter Capaldi.
