Nick Clegg has announced today a website where you can comment and vote on ideas for changes to the law in the UK. This is the introduction which sets out the intentions of this project:

Your ideas for your freedom

The Coalition Government is committed to restoring and defending your freedom – and we're asking you to participate.

We're working to create a more open and less intrusive society through our Programme for Government. We want to restore Britain’s traditions of freedom and fairness, and free our society of unnecessary laws and regulations – both for individuals and businesses.

This site gives you the chance to submit, comment on, or vote for ideas about how we can do this. Your ideas will inform government policy and some of your proposals could end up making it into bills we bring before Parliament to change the law.

So if there are any laws or regulations you'd like us to do away with, then submit your idea. If you see ideas here already that you like the look of, then rate them and get them moved up the list. And if there’s more you’d like to say, then talk to others in the comments section for each proposal.

It’s time to have your say. After all – it’s your freedom.

hmmm interesting, thanks for posting that .

However I have a total and instant distrust of politicians who use the word "Freedom" a lot in their campaigns and speeches....it's the word the American politicians use when they want their sheep voters to jump through hoops for them.....and it works!

therefore when politicians here use it, I tend to get insulted that they think we will be so easy to lead.......although, unfortunately, many of us (Sun/mail readers)  probably are.

I shall approach this new initiative with caution

I saw this on the news this morning. My first thought was 'they're gonna clobber us in the pocket again soon'. One hand giving, the other taking more back. Saying that though, I do like this approach, whether anything will actually change is another question though. I'd imagine most, if not all of the laws that are being requested to cease or be relaxed will mean more policing, and they've already said they are cutting back on the Public Sector budget for the Police force. I wait in vain.

"freedom" is relative - we're all socially ordered, in one way or the other.

I agree. But in some ways we need to be.
True...but by consent and with some thought and not because we are trained to blindly follow a few buzz words, like Freedom, Democracy, Patriotism, Jesus  etc..

I've had a look at some of the ideas already posted on Nick Clegg's site - some have merit and may be picked up, some have little chance, and the character who wants to marry a horse and has posted this has zero chance of getting their wish and is he/she is being serious is in big trouble.

Exactly DS, but tis a moral quandary. In some ways we imply consent to the movers and shakers by taking part in elections, Sky is correct that relatively speaking we, in the UK, have more freedoms than an average Zimbabwean could ever imagine.

You are underestimating the British mentality....my money is on this proposal getting thousands of votes and should be topping the list for quite some time

Depends on what you mean freedom.  People here think they have free will to make their own decisions, then all the press has to do is publish one article about evil immigrants from Jambuttystahn being given a council house and thousands of us start demanding they be sent back home

Yes we have many freedoms other countries can only dream of, but we have to make sure we keep them that way and be aware of how easily we can all be led by the testosticles and vuvuzelas to do exactly what governments/media  want!

Why would they be in big trouble? People have legally married trees cant they? This person may well have a genuine fetish for a bit of horse love. I can see a swifty discrimination claim via the front page of the Sun if Clegg kicks up a stink!

"Benedict Arnold" Clegg I trust even less than David Cameron.
That's an unusual name to attach to Cleggy there Senora

Surely someone who will put  British interests before that of the Americans is exactly the sort of person we need in power these days.

Don't think Nick Clegg really fits that bill ???

Load of old carp - all this means is that, if anything goes wrong, they can pass the buck and say, "Well you wanted it.."
Same as asking the public where they want the spending cuts to come from.

Yes, that's what I mean by 'relative'. Afterall, when the founding fathers of the Republic of the United States of America signed the declaration of independence, even they must have baulked at the part where it says 'All Men are created equally'.

I just believe he sold out his party policies for the chance of powering up with Cameron. Now I just don't trust him, and I've never trusted Cameron.
i don't think you got my point there Senora...are you an american?

Benedict Arnold may be seen as a traitor over there, but I doubt if he was to the British

Because it is reasoanble to assume that if they wish to marry that there is a sexual relationship and bestiality is illegal. And there can't be many people who would wish to make that legal.

The part about legally marrying tress I think relates to an Indian tradition where for good luck, there sometimes may be a symbolic wedding with a tree, carried out before the proper wedding of the man and woman. The Times says:

"Hindu families traditionally examine a prospective couple’s horoscopes to check for marital compatibility — even among the Westernised urban elite. Ms Rai is widely reported to be manglik, meaning she was born under a poorly placed Mars, which can bring bad luck and even premature death to her husband.

Before getting married, manglik women are traditionally required to go through a symbolic wedding to an idol of the Hindu god Vishnu or to a peepal or banana tree."

i think you and DS are saying the same thing - but in different ways.
I don't know sky. I have a different impression of the media. I would rather live in a world where the press is free to say whatever they like. It opens up debate, and keeps everyone on their toes.

i'm not suggesting that press freedom should be curtailed......i can't see where you might think I said that  ( if you are thinking I did )

I was suggesting that people don't blindly follow the crap they spout as if it was the gospel truth, and to be aware of how easily they can be manipulated by the media,

True. but on the other hand, (which i think is where DS is coming from) they also create a 'moral-panic' - an exaggerated version of their findings, which in turn, causes public over-reaction. And so, your average joe bloggs without any real understanding of statistics and how they're formed, walks away with what's been said as "truth".

I assume that you have made your own mind up what to think/believe in spite of the blind training you perceive occurs in the UK. Therefore, you have exercised your own individual free will, lets call it a 'freedom' or a 'choice'. I will now beg your leave and exercise my own free will to leave it at that
suzybean
Interesting news, but could it be seen as a bit patronising, `There there little people, we`re going to let you tell us what you want`, but `Mummy will listen to you but that`s as far as it goes - you don`t actually get any power even though you think you do`.

Politicians have got one hell of a job trying to gain public trust again - I want to give Nick Clegg the benefit of the doubt.  At least he`s making the right noises.

No-one really has the free will they would like to think they have, not you, not me.  we are all subject to social conditioning whether we like the thought of it or not.

Some are just easier to sway towards "the company line" without question than others

Well I don't like that thought. I am no more enlightened than anyone else, nor you Dance Setee. Freedom is there, just exercise your actions. Look, we are bantering on an open forum without fear of death or retribution....it's here, in front of our eyes.

Yes jeggo. Credit where credit is due. Words always have the potential to become actions. Even if it takes a 'Nelson Mandela' 27 years.

he was sneering at at the mess left behind in the wake of the recent election and cleggy mooching from one place to another, sorting out deals etc. my mate proclaimed' it's so stupid, in tunisia, it's all sorted out right away and we get on with it'

i had to remind him that is because everyone knows what the outcome of of  any govt. election in tunisia is going be ...

he said' oh yeah that's true'

Freedom is always there for those who wish to conform Suzybean.   and there are many ways other than the violence  you might get in other countries to force us to be "free"

Some countries use the military to enforce the company line.  Other countries just use the media to get people to think the way they want them to think.

Like I said, we are a comparatively free country, just don't make the mistake of thinking that we are totally free.  There are  plenty of people in this country who have protested against something that will tell you different.
