The Queen may have decided her New Years Honours (or does she?)
But it's more 'relatable' to make our own me thinks
So who should make our "National Treasures" list as an alternative to the Queen's.

Can we make a LIST OF TEN?
I'd like to propose . . . . Joanna Lumley
Ruth Jones?
As i had to Google her and she's not really a life long adored actress it may be a 'no'
Hello Roxan nice to see you
So far - this is exciting we have
1 Joanna Lumley
2 Davis Attenborough
3 BIGGINS - if thats ok
. . . and not Ruth Jones - cos i don't know much about her and that's that!!
Biggins? Ermmmmm. No. Full stop. No.
Iâll give it some thought ...
Oh. I know. Emma Willis. Not for Big Brother, or any other TV show ... but for the M&S Christmas ads. I fell a little bit in love with her!!

To 'Panto' and gets on my nerves.
I agree with Gordon Buchanan and David Jason.

Okay then, no to Emma Willis.

Exceptional qualities, things and people.

Jezza Corbyn! We don't want him as our PM (for insane reasons) so can't we have him as a national treasure for being a magic grandpa and a really nice guy?
Posthumously, Rick Mayle, George Micheal both good guys
Danny Dyer - for being a top cocknee geeza
Queen's Brian May - for speaking out for environmental issues and against injustices.
Girl called Jack [Monroe], for being a down to Earth single mother who became famous for her recipes on a shoestring, an outspoken voice against poverty
Prof Brian Cox for being able to articulate complex scientific theories so the layman can understand.

Why has no one proffered the name of David Bowie yet. His contribution to music and film along with other branches of the arts. Leaving a legacy which will endure for many centuries, well, not too many if the climate crises proves too much for the human race to endure.!

140 Million record sales would suggest he is held in affection by a considerable number of people.
It's quite hard to really define who and who is not held in the public's affection. A lot of the people who get held up as n.t's are being done so by the press and media, whether people genuinely like them is up for debate, we would need a referendum.

And one more required . . . it must be someone who is a household name and loved by the public on the whole - so not David Bowie or a politician.
Being respected, successful or a 'giant' in their field is not enough - nor is a currently popular fad - so no Robbie Williams or Emma Willis.
You don't have to 'like' them - only recognise they are home grown, instantly recognisable and raise a smile when mentioned.
And that they represent something quintessentially "British".

I wouldn't say he is in particular. I suppose the P&P thing 20 years ago got a lot of women in hot flushes and the Radio Times in a lather but other than that, meh! He is a good actor beyond Mr Darcy, but I don't think he comes close to that national treasure thing that such people as David Attenborough have.
I still say Brian May, astronomer, very intelligent man, very thoughtful man, key guitarist in a much-loved band (personally, I'm not a fan of Queen or Brian May's guitar playing for that matter but millions are) environmental campaigner, animal rights campaigner. An outspoken voice on social issues.
Gets my vote!
Not really my thing but can't deny the talent
Now Carny - i did say a huge talent, admired for their work 'may' not meet the criteria.
Is he a household name - adored by young and old alike, viewed with warmth and a smile by the majority?
Brain May ... Respect - yes but not a household name viewed with 'warmth'
What do others think?

I know what you mean, but we're at the end of 'not really quite a national treasure' end of 'national treasures'!
This isn't my taste but Queen, Abba and the Beatles are probably the most popular bands with the public in general. I would say Brian May if he isn't household name, is pretty close to being one. Most people know who Brian May is.
I just respect him as an intelligent guy and as an ethical guy. I'm not even a Queen fan. I don't think Brian May probably does qualify but he's not far off IMO.
Considering Colin Firth is in the mix! Definitely Brian May before Colin Firth!

Wait a minute. Keith Floyd was a national treasure. Got me into cooking.
velvet donkey posted:I don't like Mary Berry either Baz. She's a five star snob
Hi Velvet I used to like her ...but just recently I find her judging seems quite biased , and that put me off
Afternoon Baz
I can't say I've ever taken to her. It's not just us and them - just too aloof
Delia on the piss would run rings round her. Delia is grounded, ask Cornelian - our resident Norwich fan
I like Carnelian. I've argued with him often but at least he believes in something.
Some of his music ain't bad either.
If only Fanny Craddock was still around She was something serious!!
Reading her Wiki - incredible.
Dawn French may just round off the 25
JOAN COLLINS??

What do people think of Penelope Keith?
Should the Queen go in there?
Yes to Monty, The Queen and Penelope.
Not overly keen on Titchmarsh
There are quite a few on the list I am not keen on but they could be considered ânational treasuresâ, I donât rate Monty as a treasure whilst titchmarsh has longevity on his side a quality needed for national treasure status
Keith also got me into watches. They say that was a datejust, always looked like an Air King to me.

No chance. Never rated her.
She was greater than the sum of her parts. In her head.
Get Brenda in.
Saint posted:Helen Mirren - is she loved?
I've never taken to Helen Mirren Sainty
She got her breakthrough in one of my favourite films. I think. O Lucky Man.
I find her cold.
Put it this way.....she's no Gena Rowlands.

UK only i'm afraid
Criteria can't be if we 'like/dislike' someone - I don't agree with some on the list meself
We need one more woman - thought Joan may have been popular.
Any other suggestions to complete our 25?

Joan Hickson?
Joan Hickson is a wonderful suggestion and would have gone in but sadly she passed away some time ago. June Whitfield would also have been included but is no longer with us.
Shirley Bassey is a great suggestion - better than Joan Collins??

I loved both Joan hickson and June Whitfield ....but not sure either Bassey or Collins should be in there . How about Maggie Smith ?
Aaah @Baz i was waiting for that name
Dunno where but i've got the impression she can be quite prickly, not sure if it's true though.
Is she endearing - you're right J. Collins and S. Bassey may not qualify in the endearing.
BUT hasn't Shirley Bassey hob-knobbed with Royalty and sang for them?
She may qualify
It's a toughie
