well thats the way I am interpreting it anyway...

Got a letter from his school today... addressed to MrD & I, I sat down thinking "oh gawd... what's he done"..    (he's 14 yrs old btw)

Opened it & its from the head of beliefs & ethics (aka RE) at his school..

It said...

"I am writing to congratulate Alfie for a really excellent piece of writing in his end of topic assignment.

Last term we studied the Holocaust & had a Holocaust Survivor in to speak to the Year 9 Students.  Alfie taken full advantage of this opportunity & his writing suggests a depth of thought & analysis which is outstanding.   Alfie produced a written account that was a pleasure to mark and the superb grade which it received is a reflection of the high level of thinking that went into its composition."

Yes.. I am partly posting this cos I am all proud & all that..   but also cos I am more than a little bit gobsmacked.

This is soooo not the kid I know & love!    I remember the day they had the Holocaust Survivor talk... I remember him being less than enthusiastic about it..  though tbf, when I asked him how it was later that day he did say it was actually quite interesting.

BUT... I also remember him doing the homework..  the written peice..   it was the usual battle of wills...  him not wanting to do his homework on a Sunday, us telling him there would be no PS3 until it was done...

& he knocks out something WITH DEPTH!!!     WITH DEPTH!!!!

He has been appropriately praised by MrD & I (his sister is grumbling cos she is not used to the spotlight not being on her )...  and I bought him a large bar of Cadburys, a bag of Tangfastic & a can of Monster after school...   as a small reward.

Am I the only parent that really doesn't know their kid?     I am used to it being the other way round... the disappointing way round.     And...it does always seem to be the boy that surprises me in this way.     Maybe its boys I don't get

Apparently they are forwarding his essay to the Holocaust Survivor for them to read..    I WANNA SEE IT TOO!

The boy is being very blase about it all

Well Done Alfie

isn't it?

I am cooking a roast lamb dinner tonight (one of his faves)..    and am all grins (though that could be partly cos of the cheap cooking wine I am drinking whilst slogging in the kitchen)..

 Well done to Master Ditty!

It's lovely for you to have such a positive experience Ditty ...sometimes maybe we're too close to our kids to see their wonderfulness (I know what I mean).  I've just recently seen another side to my daughter and it was such a nice feeling - I'm determined I'll keep it to the front of my memory for the undoubtedly challenging times to come

Actually i think the Holocaust really strikes a chord with a lot of kids- such an horrendous period of history. I remember when I first heard about it through a programme called 'All Our Yesterdays' it had a profound effect on me..............................in my middle sons GCSE year the school arranged a trip to the battlefieds of WW1 -  they went to the evening service (last post) at the Menin Gate - it was his birthday when he was away and he got to lay the wreath. It was an experience  he has never forgotten (probably aided by my passion for history). He went on to get A* in History and his degree was History related.

He's my baybeeee boy!

And he will kill me if he reads that!

Tell him not to worry, my lot are 22, 26 and 29 and they are still my baybees!

Ditty, my kids are 34 and 31 and they hate me talking about them on here. Hard cheddar.

Compliments to your son. He's the same age as my granddaughter and she managed to surprise us last week by getting a letter from her head of house inviting her to be on a debating panel about WW1 & WW2. We thought she'd be over the moon, but she is very shy, so it's a delicate decision between trying to pursuade her to do it or telling her that it's her decision.

Aww well done to her Cologne...  & yeah, tough one to call.

The boy is out of the golden zone now..      daughter & I are just heading out to my friends bday bash...    as the girl was walking out of the room I told her I could see her bum (a reference to the waaaay too short skirt she has on)...   the boy chirps up   "its a bit hard to miss it"
