Unique face and instantly recognisable voice.

Oh Jeez - I was watching him at the cinema only last week.

It's not yet known if John Hurt had completed his filming in what would be his last film. It's a Joe Wright biopic of Winston Churchill (Gary Oldman) at the beginning of WW2.

The film is called Darkest Hour. It's scheduled for release at the end of the year.
Just watched the news. Sad loss of a true 'actors' actor, and a versatile one at that. He also has a memorable role in one of my favourite films, Alien.
Whenever I read about the death of an actor such as this, I always hope someone has taken the time to sit and film them talking about their life and career in great depth.

Yes, that was his first role that really impinged on me!
Mine was him as Timothy Evans in 10 Rillington Place in early 1971 (that's the Richard Attenborough version). That was the first role for which he was nominated for a BAFTA.

Seems kind of fitting given this forum.
Two roles stick out for me...Midnight Express (Max) because it left such a big impression on me and The Naked Civil Servant, he played it brilliantly.
As EC said - a versatile actor - whom I doubt was ever short of work (I can immediately recall him from a dozen or more productions).

It's a repeat from 2 years ago. The play by Keith Waterhouse was originally played by Peter O'Toole on stage and is available on DVD as a performance was filmed.
There is a warning for strong language. Although it was broadcast in the afternoon, the watershed rules for television do not apply to radio provided that a warning is given. If it was given a BBFC certificate it would presumably get a 15 as the Peter O'Toole DVD does.
