I heard on the news that there have been reports that Durham police say that Cummings trip to Barnard Castle was against the lockdown rules , but won’t be prosecuted ! I don’t know how true this is ....

Apparently it may have constituted a slight breach of rules but no more action is to be taken

So that 60 mile round trip may have constituted a slight breach of rules but the trip to Durham didn’t

They're treating it as a "minor" breach" as apparently no social distancing rules were broken, and they're not taking retrospective action as they haven't done so against anyone-else and they don't want to treat Cummings differently.

Dominic Cummings 'might have broken lockdown rules'

@Moonie They can use bluetooth which does not cost anything apart from battery power. Two devices can communicate with each other via the installed app and exchange information relating to C-19 contact anonymously (well, we would hope anonymously).

The app does use bluetooth and requires that it's enabled on devices:

Sorry Eugene ...but it doesn’t wash with me I’m afraid ....and I say that as a former Conservative voter ( although I didn’t vote in the last election )  . In fact after all this I don’t think I’ll be voting for them again in a hurry . I think the way it’s all been handled is appalling

The BBC (news report, not the online article above) has pointed out that the Durham police did not refer to a number of potentially outstanding matters, e.g. Cummings apparently driving with poor eyesight, and visiting a hospital while still infected. Downing St's response to the police statement was that they now consider the matter closed, but that might yet prove premature...

As a general point, I do agree with you: the whole matter's been handled appallingly.

Website has crashed for me this morning.!

So want to see if it's got to 1M votes.

I let this slide because there did indeed seem to be some problems a couple of days ago with the  petition site.

There have been a lot more signatures since then. Still not quite over the million, but getting close: over 967 thousand last time I checked!

As an aside: currently watching "The Coronavirus Newscast", and Laura Kuenssberg is claiming that the 40-or-so Tory MPs that have spoken out against Cummings' Durham expedition are actually the tip of the iceberg. Apparently there are a lot more who are furious but (currently) remaining off the record - including four cabinet ministers!

Have you seen the petition for Cummings to keep his job?

A couple of days ago it had 25,000!

I don't know about anyone else, this -C-19 thing is scary but what is worse we have a fecking maniac in charge.

We are sending kids back to school, the R number is hovering near one, tonight for the first time a group of kids had climbed in the tree behind my fence and have always used it to make a den, ages about 7-10...schools opening, it over now! No, it bloody well isn't. and the parents have less sense than their children.

My daughters partner heard on the news tonight dentists were opening on the 8th June and being a manager of a dental clinic phoned her boss immediately...first he had heard of it. After numerous phone calls, he found out this was true, he's going ballistic, they are not prepared to make the surgery safe with this short notice.

Every day it's a nightmare and this Government is well and truly a dictatorship...although it was well known 4/5 years ago they intended to make the UK a one-party state...well lucky us eh. I really do not recognise our Country and sometimes I'm ashamed of it.

I was appalled to listen to a video of Dominic Cummings FiL, I can see why he married this guy's daughter, I have heard Dominic Cummings make similar statements... also Johnson's dad, the apple doesn't fall far does it! It's a twitter link but anyone can watch it, you don't have to be a member.

Common sense from someone who isn't an idiot.

Professor & Chair of Global Public Health,  Medical School. Director of

Looking at the estimates for daily new cases in England (8K/day), the openings of shops/schools on Monday, watching carefully what's happening in East Asia & combining this with what we know so far about this virus --> feels like mistakes are being repeated from early March.

My suggestion: bring down daily new cases to a low level, get test/trace/isolate in place and core infrastructure build up, get regular testing going for essential workers/teachers/students, monitor borders for imported cases, & move to mandatory masks in shops/public transport.

Then ease measures while testing widely & w/ good data systems that alert public whether it is red/amber/green in their area. Need clusters of cases identified rapidly & broken up before tips over into sustained community transmission. If it tips, hard to avoid another lockdown.

My understanding was that they're not being forced to open: it was up to individual dental practises, and would be dependent on availability of PPE in any event.

That said; the article here appears to be contradictory in places. Also note that chief dental officer Sara Hurley claims she's already written to dentists about what they have to do before reopening...

Not sure it's the same one you're referring to, but I've just seen a petition on the change.org site (same as the "sack him" petition which is now over 990,000 signatures  ).

The "don't sack him" petition had less than 2900 signatures the last time I looked...

Dominic Cummings should KEEP his job and NOT be sacked

Thank you, Victoria Derbyshire, for confirming what I said last night, dentists were not informed.

I was pleased about this. I rang my dentist today to make an appointment for a check up for our family of 4. They said they only knew about this yesterday and won’t be able to open on June 8 because they haven’t had guidance or training for how they will treat patients.

I think it is, was on change.org, but I think I may have misread the totals.

The letter from the GDO of England published yesterday:
https://www.england.nhs.uk/cor...re-letter-28-May.pdf

The date of June 8 is when dental practices commence opening. They can only open once ppe and safety protocols are in place. They will need to sequence and schedule when to see patients depending on the urgency of needs, the needs of vulnerable people and their capacity to undertake work.

I know this El Loro, and until it was on the news most practices didn't know they were opening. The meeting for guidance isn't being held until next Thursday. It's a bit like the announcement to go back to work, announce before preparation seems to be a running theme with Johnson.

I think we're ****ed

and

On former CSA says unlock is wrong, that if we had this level of deaths at the start we would be locking down, that Dominic Cummings was wrong to travel, that govt handling of the pandemic has been "disastrous" with maybe 40,000 excess preventable deaths

Dame_Ann_Average

The news said there were 800 new COVID cases a day!!

Why are people so keen to go out and mingle - it's blatantly dangerous

Just cos Bungling Boris says we can means nothing to me

I won't be going anywhere!!

Another Sage member speaking out, obviously Johnson and Cummings are not listening to Sage advice. This is really worrying, we were slightly up on deaths this week than last..wtf are they doing!

Covid-19 spreading too fast to lift lockdown in England. Agree with John & clear science advice. TTI has to be in place, fully working, capable dealing any surge immediately, locally responsive, rapid results & infection rates have to be lower. And trusted

Oliver Dowden was taking today's briefing. He was asked a direct question about Cummings and he batted it off, tripping out the same old same old in respect to Cummings.

So, clearly, the government are not going to listen to the public, despite the huge numbers writing to MPs and the 1M+ petition.

This could do for Boris. This ridiculous stance could come back and bite him.

I did not know, but there is a second SAGE team.

A representative (Sir David something or other) has said that, looking at the figures, we are coming out of lockdown too early.

He said the Infection rate is higher than when we went into lockdown. So, he went on to say, why not come out of lockdown when the figure is lower than when we went in.

It’s mad .....and I agree , they shouldn’t ease lockdown until the figures mirror those when we went in ! I certainly am not going to be going anywhere but home any time soon

All I read is:-

Relax/lessen this, that and the next thing as it will be better for businesses and the economy. Meanwhile health and science are saying NO, NO, NO, IT'S TOO SOON, but the government are ploughing ahead regardless. What happened to the 'We are following the advice of the health and science experts'?
