@Enthusiastic Contrafibularities very interesting ....fascinating the way all that devastation ....and bullet riddled buildings ....was juxtaposed with people simply getting on with every day living ...even the trams were running  By the way , I had a friend who went to work for the BFI for a while  ....somewhere over your way

Yes, all those bombed out buildings and people just cycling along as if nothing had happened - can't see recent generations being so resilient. It looks like the Brandenberg Gate is a bit of a mess!

I'm addicted to BFI releases. Being buying them up for a few years. Some great documentaries and films.

As a historian , in a previous life , I love all that sort of stuff.....and no, I doubt we’d be as resilient

I might try and keep this thread going and see if people will contribute historical 'pieces' be they video, sound, webpages or any other on-line format. I'm sure there must be others into history.

This is utterly fascinating and one of the best amateur 'documentaries'

What I have watched looks very interesting Renton....I will try to watch the rest once I sign off tonight

Sometimes it's hard to remember these places really exist - this shows it all and hopefully makes the horror people faced more tangible

Me!

I was fascinated by a book I read detailing the Crimean War and another I read on the beginings of the First World War. It wasn't really because of the assassination of the Grand Duke and his wife, that was just used as a convenient excuse!

Extremely Fluffy Fluffy Thing

I've read stuff other than war related, but those two really grabbed me. They were so meticulous and went into such fine detail.

History read under your own terms is so much more interesting than the way it was dished up at school.

School history had all incidents happening in isolation, as if the rest of the world stood still while this one little corner of it had its conflict or crisis. Did you know that France wanted to go to war with America at the same time as being involved in the Crimean war?

When you look at that and you look at other parts of the world and what is happening today, I for one am thoroughly ashamed that we have learned nothing for the despair and heartbreak on world war 1 and 11

I have a huge book 'The history of the 20th century'

It is features inventions and progress BUT almost totally features death, destruction and war.

We really are a stupid and nasty animal.
