I did not make the comments about the Mayor of London as a political statement.

It was made almost as a running commentary of the mornings events and also out of shock toward the inappropriate nature of his comment.

Not brave, my knowledge of London is so useless I didn't even know we'd be going near it, but I bet there are thousands of people who are gibbering wrecks every time they look out of their windows. Not least the people who live in the other tower blocks close by

Very true. I'm so lucky not to be one of them. Bet tower block residents country wide, are not quite as comfortable as they used to be!

There should be no doubt that the Tories and that Tory council are to blame for this.  It is they that sat on the recommendations of a report on a previous fire.  It's that repugnant liar Johnson who batted aside concerns with childish abuse.  It's Tory donors who carried out work with cheap dangerous materials.

This whole thing was ALL ABOUT tarting up an eyesore tower block so that the rich could benefit from increasing property prices and the council could benefit from increasing business rates.  Meanwhile the tenants could just go to hell.  Their concerns brushed aside because money = power, and if you don't have money, you're dispensable.

To be fair to Sadiq, it was before his time as mayor.  He was not in a position to influence decisions.  However, the Tory Party were and while the present PM   can't be directly blamed, it was her party that ignored findings and that arrogant waste of space Boris Johnson who brushed aside concerns.  If May were strong and stable, she'd sack Boris Johnson from the cabinet at the very least.  Unfortunately, she's weak and wobbly.

London fire: Flats acquired for Grenfell Tower survivors.

Sixty-eight social housing flats in Kensington, London, are to be made available to survivors of the Grenfell Tower fire, the government has said.

Each new home in the two blocks set aside for social housing will be fully furnished and completed to a high-specification, the government said.

The flats are expected to be ready by the end of July.

So what  happened to her previous statement that they would all be rehoused within three weeks? Or was that timescale going to have the residents scattered to the four winds?

Extremely Fluffy Fluffy Thing

tories have bought 68 properties, social housing ones, at knock down price to rehome some of the victims of the fire

daily mail readers are going ballistic, saying that (their words) muslims & immigrants etc are getting better homes than theyve got, after theyve worked all their lives etc etc..

they apparently dont give a flying f*ck that those people escaped with their lives, lost every single thing they own & possibly lost family members

im also reading a lot about..how about looking after our homeless servicemen..yet these people have probably walked past them 100's of times & never given them a 2nd thought

if that HUGE amount of money that the tories are parting with now (taxpayers money) was spent making those tower blocks safe, then this horrific inferno wouldnt have happened in the 1st place

May seems to have no proper concept of the Grenfell situation. It would appear that the Lakanal report's recommendations were farmed out to councils as an OPTION instead of a REQUIREMENT and now she is saying that having the cladding on houses tested is an OPTION too.

It would appear that the government is going to STRONGLY recommend that all councils get this testing done and send in samples for testing IF THEY WISH!!!!!!

It shouldn't be up to each individual council, the government should be sending out teams to do compulsory testing!

I'm thinking this is de ja vu, Cowell is on record for backing the Tories and obviously has within his network very rich people.

So where is Cowell's damning rebuke of the Tory Party and a Tory council that couldn't give a flying **** about their working class constituents?  Just a bland statement that a shit exploitation 'charity single' will be released featuring his corporate friendly artists.

Why didn't he stump up some of his own cash and get some of his mega rich cronies to fork out?  So here we have a media mogul releasing a charity single with quite a few artists from his own stable.  That will shift some units! Cowell and his acts get the kudos, the "little" people buy the single and Cowell's acts get the publicity to shift units for his acts.

I'm getting a bit tired of the sanctimonious mega rich rattling the tin.  People like Cowell are the problem not the solution.

Of course, some do care, Brian May is in on it, IMO he cares passionately.  I'm no Queen fan, can't stand their music, but Brian May does care. I've heard him speak on these matters and in my view, he really does care about society.  Simon Cowell, though, I really don't think he gives a monkey's

it turns out that the housing given to the victims was actually earmarked for social housing in the 1st place

this piece from the independent explains it

**The idea that St Edward was being especially generous by offering the flats for use in this way certainly is: they were always going to be social housing.

But the developer is undoubtedly helping get the flats ready for occupation faster, which will probably cost them money.

The flats were originally due for occupation between October and December. Now they are expected to be ready at the end of July.

The Government is also helping to subsidise this more rapid turnaround, which a spokesperson said would cost ÂĢ2m-ÂĢ3m, with the money coming out of the Communities department budget.

So an accurate way for the Government to have presented its action would have been to claim that it was using public funds to speed up the provision of social housing in Kensington that was already in the pipeline and specifically earmarking it for the benefit of ex-Grenfell residents.

So why didn’t they just say that?

One possibility is that with the Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn putting pressure on the Government to requisition empty luxury homes in Kensington for use by Grenfell survivors, it suited ministers to allow the impression to go out that they were doing something radical along those lines.**

this is probably the best take ive heard on this situation

I agree Pirate and the swearyness doesn't seem TOO sweary and almost appropriate for this circumstance!

Thanks for this, it is so spot on.  That Tory council just viewed its working class constituents as a necessary evil.  Needed to supply the services the monied elite required but beyond that, they were surplus to requirements.   Tart up the tower block, make it look pretty, make it look like even the oiks were living in sparkling luxurious modern accommodation thanks to the 'trickle down effect'.

It all contributes to raising the price of private property and raising business rates.  Meanwhile chances were that the tower probably wouldn't become a roman candle so they just took a punt on tarting the tower block up with a cheap, flammable but aesthetically pleasing facade.
