Facebook has started testing a system that lets users pay to highlight or promote posts.

By paying a small fee users can ensure that information they post on the social network is more visible to friends, family and colleagues.

The tests are being carried out among the social network's users in New Zealand.

I agree. It's like any other kind of social networking. If it's used in the proper way it's a fantastic thing. I only have family, close friends and work colleagues on mine. It's mostly chit chat but it's great to see family updates from those I've not seen in a while.

They can trial all they like for people to pay for certain things. As long as they aren't enforcing it on us or limiting the things we already have then I don't see a problem

facebook maybe many things to many people, to most of us that are able to post , virtually what we like, facebook is almost an irrelevance.

to some  of those who don't share that facility, it's a life line.

Thanks for explaining it Fluffy, I won't be partaking of it!

I'm with Cags on this development, my only problem with FB at the mo is it's very difficult for me to use because my pc is on its last legs and everything is soooo slow.

And I can never remember whose status's I've posted in so convos are difficult!

Have you got the new timeline thingy? I don't yet so it's easy to see where I've posted but I know people who have the timeline and can't see where they've posted.

I'd always heard such a lot of bad things about FB from those I knew who were on it.  Statements like "you'll never get me on there" were fast and frequent till my grand daughter went to Thailand for 5 months.  I got a friend to give me a tutorial (of sorts, I'm still a bit of a chump) and it meant I shared all her adventures, ups and downs, and delighted in the hundreds of pictures she posted every day.  I'm not a total devotee...yet but I won't be so critical of it in future.

I followed all the Farmers on BBGF,my farm was abandoned a long time ago but I still play a few other games.

I understand what you mean Aquarius, but personally I still don't trust FB and those running it....and so I have no intention of ever being on it. One of the things about it that is annoying (a bit irrational I know) is the way it's touted at times as if it was the only way to communicate with other people, and that if FB didn't exist we'd still be in the dark ages!

I know what you mean Fluffy ~ it is a bit up itself  but it certainly served its purpose for me for that period.  I have to say I don't spend a lot of time on it since my grand daughter got home a fortnight ago.  I don't see the point of telling everyone what I had for brekkers

I think we've all got to have the timeline thingy ... mine hasn't changed yet. I don't really care as I only have three friends on FB - it really doesn't matter what my profile looks like - I only ever post when I truly have something worth saying!

They've been threatening that for months, though, and it still hasn't happened yet (thank gawd).

I really DO need to get more familiar with it Lee but I don't always have the time.

Maybe I'll try out some games.

Me too Cold Sweat, there were posts showing how to revert back to the old version but I think FB changed that.

This is how feel about FB Fluffy, they are so underhanded about information etc. I've not been on there for a long time now.

I like it  I use it to keep up with my Family mostly. like this weekend was my cousins 21st and I am loving that the invites were FB invites and the build up and now the pics and videos and the craic is continuing through the slagging off on the pics. love it.

I don't click advertising links etc i don't play games in fact i doubt they make any money off my personal one.

I agree! It's another optional piece of social stuff.

Exactly. It's great for those just wishing to stay in contact with family and friends who are far away. It's up to us who we have as friends, what we post there etc  and it's up to us what level of access we give people to our information.

Same here. I don't ever click on links, adverts and I don't do any of the games. My mum is addicted to gem swap 2 though

I went to a wedding the other week where she created an event rather than spend a fortune on invites.

Latest from FB.

Facebook is rolling out a new Nearby Friends feature in the US, which alerts users when a friend is close by.

When switched on, the option reveals how many miles away the person is, until you chose to share your precise location for a meet-up.

Facebook Nearby Friends

© Facebook

The feature is optional and users can choose whether friends, close friends, or a specific friend can see how close they are and for a set period of time.

All users must have Nearby Friends switched on to see who is nearby.

seriously ...why.

Strange how things pan out. I now spend time on FB, it's all optional! I had a letter from a German friend who said he had packed in because of all the spam!? Weird.
I eventually binned Twitter though.
Garage Joe

I've seen a lot of spam recently Joe, pretty graphic pictures of rape or naked women and I'm wondering are people actually clicking on these things?  How do you end up with that on your wall if you haven't clicked to watch it?  Or could it be from liking something else?  Whatever the cause, it's disgusting.

Ells
