Cook next out for 17 , England 22 for 2.
England's first target will be to get above 45 runs to avoid their lowest ever test score.
England passed the 45 runs level.
Ballance out for 23, England 74 for 3.
No further wickets fell today. At close of play England are 344 for 5 with Joe Root on 102 and Matt Prior on 76.
Plunkett was out for 39 with England on 547 for 9.
Since then Joe Root has just reached his double century.
And England has declared on 575 for 9, Joe Root on 200 and James Anderson on 9 being the not out batsmen.
Chris Jordan in his first over gets a wicket - Karunaratne out for 38, Sri Lanka 54 for 1.
No further wickets fell by close of play leaving Sri Lanka on 140 for 1.
At half way through the match Sri Lanka are 256 for 2. The most exciting thing at present is that the Radio 5 Live transmission was interuppted by a power outage at Lords so the commentators have had to move. They think that the floodlights which are on are draining the batteries and that the electronic score may stop working.
At this point in the match it looks as if the result will be a draw or that Sri Lanka get a lead over England in their innings and then skittle England out when England bats again.
England strike with the new ball, Jayawardene out for 55, Sri Lanka 277 for 3. Sangakkara is currently on 106.
Jayawardene out for 6 and Kulasekara for 7.
At close of play Sri Lanka are 415 for 7 with Mathews on 79 and Herath on 0 being the not out batsmen.
England are 160 runs ahead so will feel they are ahead but with Mathewss still in that could change.
Herath out for 2, Mathews for 102, Pradeep for 4. Sri Lanka all out for 453. Eranga on 5, the not out batsman.
England have a lead of 122.
I'm delighted that the chaps are rallying a bit and getting some confidence back after the nightmare 'down under'
(Hope I haven't put the mockers on them now)
Root out for 15, Moeen out for 4, England 102 for 5, lead of 224.
Prior out for 16, Jordan for 35, Broad for 24.
At close of play England are 267 for 8 with Ballance on 104 and Plunkett on 2 the not out batsmen.
England have a lead of 389 so the expectation is that they will declare and see if they can bowl Sri Lanka out tomorrow though it is not impossible for Sri Lanka to get those runs in one day.
Karunaratne out for 16 - Sri Lanka 25 for 1
Currently Sri Lanka 45 for 1 after 12 overs. They need 390 runs within 90 overs to win.
Silva out for 57, Sri Lanka 123 for 2 after 42.1 overs.
At this stage it looks as if a draw is the most likely outcome.
Sangakkara out for 51, Thirimanne for 2 leaving Sri Lanka on 170 for 5 so mat not be a draw after all. Still about 28 overs to go with the new ball available for the last 10 overs.
Jayawardene out for 8, Sri Lanka 194 for 6. 1 over to go before the new ball is due to be taken, and then 10 overs.
Kulasekara out for 1 and Mathews for 18 leaving Sri Lanka 201 for 8.
14 balls left to go.
Hirath out for 1 on the first ball of the last over being bowled by Broad - Sri Lanka 201 for 9.
Sri Lanka survives the 4th ball - 2 balls left - can Pradeep survive?
Sri Lanka finish on 201 for 9 with Eranga and Pradeep the not out batsmen both on 0.
Although the pitch was very flat resulting in a not very exciting match, there were some good moments.
The second of two Tests against Sri Lanka starts on Friday at Headingley.
Second Test started with England winning the toss and putting Sri Lanka in.
First wicket has fallen - Silva out for 13, Sri Lanka 37 for 1.
Karunaratne spectacularly bowled out by Plunkett for 28, Sri Lanka 56 for 2.
Mathews out for 26 leaving Sri Lanka 161 for 5. Currently 187 for 5. Sangakkara is on 71.
Prasad out for 0, Sri Lanka 229 for 7, Chandimal is currently on 48.
Chandimal out for 45, Sri Lanka 229 for 8.
Eranga out for 0, Sri Lanka 229 for 9.
Broad is on a hat trick.
It seems that Broad did get a hat trick but he and the crowd were unaware of this. He got Sangakkara out on the last ball of his previous over, Chandimal on the first ball of this over, and Eranga on the second.
At the end of the over the announcer informed the crowd so that they duly applauded Broad who had not realised.
Pradeep out for 13 so Sri Lanka finish on 257 with Herath not out on 14. Plunkett got 5 wickets for 64 runs.
At close of play England are 36 for 0 with Cook on 14 and Robson on 21.
England currently 166 for 1, Robson on 76 and Ballance 60. Steady progress but on the slow side.
Ballance out for 74, England currently 200 for 2, Robson is on 92.
Sam Robson

Eventually out for 127 England 278 for 3, a lead of 21.
Bell out for 64 quickly followed by Root for 13 leaving England 311 for 5.
Mooen out for 2, England 313 for 6.
A bit of a collapse rather like Sri Lanka's yesterday.
Close of play with England 320 for 6, Jordan on 4 and Prior on 3 with a lead of 63. England will be disappointed for the collapse as they had been hoping for a substantial lead to avoid having a second innings. As it is Sri Lanka will be thinking they are back in it. Tomorrow's first session could be critical in the outcome of the match though I will be out during that.

Totally agree! Hopefully England can push on and gain a first innings lead of well over100.
England 365 all out - a lead of 108
Prior was 27 not out - a pity the tail didn't hang around and give him more support to push the total up to around 400. Still, providing we now bowl well at the Sri Lankans 108 should prove a handy advantage.
Although Silva was out for 17, Sri Lanka have progressed to 86 for 1 and look set for a big score. At present England will do well to get a draw.
Karunaratne out for 45. At tea Sri Lanka 99 for 2 so trail England by 9 runs.
Sangakkara put for 55 and Thirimanne for another duck, both down to Moeen leaving Sri Lanka 176 for 4 with a lead of of 68.
The wicket is starting to take spin so unless England can get the remaining 6 wickets fairly cheaply they are facing an uphill struggle in their second innings.
Close of play Sri Lanka 214 for 4, a lead of 106. Jayawardene on 55 and Mathews on 24. Geoffrey Boycott has been scathingly critical of England's bowling today.
I wonder if England being eliminated out of the World Cup has demoralised the England cricket team in some way as they don't seem to be playing with a desire to win.
Mathews is well on course to win the game for Sri Lanka. Currently they are 363 for 7 with Mathews on 116, a lead of 255. At some point this afternon they will declare leaving England with a tough challenge to avoid defeat. It's hard to believe that England are currently 3rd in the rankings for test cricket and Sri Lanka 7th.
Herath was out just before the tea break for 48. Sri Lanka 426 for 8 with Mathews on 149 and a lead of 318. My guess is that Mathews will go all out once play resumes to see if he can get to 200 before they declare and get an hour at England before close of play,
However there are showers forecast at Headingley in the next hour or so which play curtail that plan. The forecast is dry for tomorrow and even if no further play was possible today, Sri Lanka are already in a strong position to win.
Mathews was out for 160, Pradeep for a duck so Sri Lanka 497 all out. Eranga not out on 20. Sri Lanka has a lead of 349 runs. Although England have sufficient time to get 350 runs, that seems unlikely.
Anything can happen. Keep the faith
Cook out for 16, Ballance out for a duck first ball, England 39 for 2. Bell survives a hat trick by Prasad.
Although I want England to win, they are not playing as a team who believe they can win whereas Sri Lanka are.
Oh dear!
Plunkett sent in as night watchman out fot a duck. As it was during the last over of the day, that was the close of play leaving England 57 for 5.
The England team are likely to face the most savage criticism ever levelled at an England side. I assume that Cook will announce his resignation as captain tomorrow and quite likely will be dropped from the team for the time being.
England in the World Cup may be criticised for the failure but they were drawn in easily the toughest group. That cannot be said for the cricket. They have no excuses for what has been a disgraceful display over the last couple of days.
England have moved on to 83 for 5 when rain intervened. An early lunch is being taken.
Currently England are 211 for 7 with Moeen on 71 and Jordan on 21 with some 30 overs to go. Although England could win by getting another 139 runs, that is highly unlikely.
Moeen has just reached his century so well done to him and regardless of the result he, at least, deserves credit for perserverance.
Anderson out for a duck off the penultimate ball after having faced over 50 balls. England all out for 249, Moeen not out on 108.
The first time Sri Lanka has won a test series in England.
The series of 5 Test matches between England and India starts on 9th July. But will Cook be the captain?
Although defeated we do seem to have at least found a couple of promising players.
I haven't started a thread for the England v India test series as I've given up following the England team as the current level of performance makes it rather depressing. I see that India got 457 runs off their first innings. In reply England are currently 25 for 1 with Cook out again for 5 runs. Hardly surprising.
Cook out again cheaply in the second Test, this time for 10 runs. Just how long will England retain him? His current form is a liability to the team and he needs to be dropped so that he can try to regain some form from county cricket.
