Ideally, you shouldn't really be using the "Suspend all Email Notifications" options all the time. It's only really meant for when you're unable to manage your account, e.g. when you're on holiday, and it may mean that you miss important announcements.

[For example, I think the reason a lot of FMs haven't known about the recent chat events is because they've stopped all e-mail notifications.]

Having said that: there are a few FMs who really do need to use it. One FM recently had to stop all e-mails because they were being redirected to their mobile phone (with resulting charges).

If you're not in that category, however, I personally find that going into "Notifications" and un-ticking the boxes:
"Comments/Replies To Posts I Am Watching", and
"Someone Adds Tag To My Content"
cuts the e-mail input down to manageable levels.

That's fair enough. But what if you don't want to be notified about ANYTHING via e-mail, just alerts and ticker?
Well, you could try unticking all the "Instant Email" boxes, and leave the appropriate "My Alerts" and "Site Ticker" boxes ticked. I haven't personally tried this so I cannot guarantee that nothing will slip through, but the options do look comprehensive.

TBH though, if you are absolutely certain that you don't want to receive any e-mails, ever, then the "Suspend All Email Notifications" would be appropriate - just as long as you are aware that you may miss something important. There are some notifications that are only really meaningful as e-mails, e.g. ban and unban notices.

My one concern about this all-along has simply been that a lot of FMs seem to have leapt for the "Suspend All" option without really considering the consequences.

i tried quite a few times to stop them but every time i checked my emails, there it was......you have 500 new emails......my mistake was unbelievably stupid, after i checked/unchecked the relevant boxes i didn't press the 'update notification settings' tab at the bottom of the page, after i did that it was all ok..............
If it makes you feel any better, you are by no means the only FM to forget to do that. I'm pretty certain it's the main reason why a lot of FMs had problems early-on, and (IMO) why quite a few got so frustrated that they resorted to the "nuclear option".

It cannot be stated often enough: when you change your Settings or Notifications, you must press the appropriate "Update Settings" button at the bottom of the page.
