Moving to Sheffield in the spring.  The areas I know are Walkley, Hillsborough, Chesterfield Road area and I have family in Handsworth but I don't know it at all. Any advice in terms of safety etc?

Hi Roxan,

Firstly, let me say 'Welcome to Sheffield'.

To answer your questions above. Walkley is a popular area, especially with students, although many are now moving into the city centre as there is a lot of new accomodation for them. I have friends who live near there (in Crookes) and it is very good for the Uni's, hospitals and good links to the city. In my opinion a good place to house hunt, but keep high up the hill as possible as you don't want to drop into Netherthorpe area. Also I would say Crookes is a good place to look. Walkley is not too far from Hillsborough either.

I know Hillsborough mainly due to the fact my football team plays there and I know some of the areas close to the ground. There are some nice properties around Hillsborough Park and the streets coming off the main roads around the park. Hillsborough has quite a large shopping centre and very good transport links which take you across the city, there is a decent sized bus terminus and the tram runs through Hillsborough. I would avoid going out of Hillsborough up towards Wadsley Bridge as a bit further up is Parson Cross and I would not live there to be honest.

I actually live in Broomhall which is not considered the best of areas, but it is so close to the city centre (10 minute walk), but I have to say, I feel safe and have lived here since the late 1990's so it can't be too bad!  A bit further up the hill from me is Broomhill and I would recommend that area, but the house prices are very high.

I know Handsworth as it is close to where my mum lives in Gleadless, but it's not really an area I have spent any time in, mainly passed through. You can find some nice houses (and flats) in Gleadless. I lived there through my school years. If you are looking in Gleadless make sure you don't slip into the Manor Top area or Prince of Wales Road, anything going down Ridgeway Road, towards Gleadless Town End is fine (my sisters and mum still live there). All the roads either side of the ring road are nice and well established. Again, it's on the tram route.

I don't know what you are looking for (house, flat) and if you are planning to rent or buy, that would help in other possible suggestions.

If you have lots of money, Ecclesall Road area is excellent, great boutique shops and restaurants, some lovely parks. Crookesmoor is also nice, again can be quite pricey. Ranmoor and Dore are also desirable areas but not cheap.

If the city centre appeals there is a lot of apartments to choose from and there is so much development going on at the moment that the choice is pretty wide. I am actually looking at Kelham Island myself. A sustainable, Scandinavian inspired development which is kinda trendy at present.

Finally, if you fancy living on the edge of the city centre in a grade II listed brutalist tower block, the much publicised (and where the new Doctor Who first episode was shot) Park Hill flats has apartments for sale. They are quite nice. But it's all a matter of taste and some people love them, others don't.

I have written quite a bit, so when you have read it, let me know if you need any further help or clarification. I will look back in tomorrow to see if you have posted an update.

Thank you so much EC! That is awesome! Looking to rent initially until we get organized. I am sure I will have more questions nearer the time if you don't mind but this really helps! ๐ŸŒŸ

Don't worry - he has a top secret dossier called "Sheffield - the untold story" ready and waiting.

You never saw me, ok
