I think that scene between Don and Joan in the hospital was soooo highly sexually charged... she never behaves like that with him in the office... And knowing Don's waywardness, I wonder if that is going to be his new distraction and not that dull hippy teacher!

Oh... and when the Brits were parading through the office on their new purge did you spot Paul sitting on the desk in his office playing 'Jerusalem' on his guitar?!

Definitely was, and very tender too. I wondered then if she'd been secretly in love with Don for years?

I Just love Mad Men and last night was indeed a cracking episode!

Hi noseyrosie!

Yeah.. I'm sure Joan is in love with Don.  I was talking to greenandpink about this (we're RL friends too) and have sort of realised that they both excerpt power and are at the top of their different games... Don in his prowess in the agency business and Joan in the sexual office business. Maybe they both recognise this in each other and are mutually attracted to the other's potency?

Anyway... looking forward to more discussions here next week!

Heh heh thanks for that Xochiquetzal good stuff. Interesting view on Don and Joan. I agree -  he's alpha and so is she - but they have a streak of vulnerability. Oh its such a well written and performed series, so layered. I love the Guardian blog +  sneak in there to catch the subtleties I missed out on.

Well! That was a bit of handbrake turn after last week's episode!

Suddenly I'm thrown back into chaos about Don! Just as he seems to mellow and realise the mood of his time with his family and office relationships, he reverts to stereotypical type... His horrendously dismissive dialogue with Peggy... like his comment on Betty's request he has an opinion on the new decor... something like "put the lamp on the other end of the couch"... and he simply goes off and beds the next available...
Tut!

Very interesting take, thanks Xochiquetzal . What an episode! I also need to rewatch them / err "savour" them.

Don's treatment of Peggy - surprisingly 50's throwback  - although he softened it with encouragement at the end. I wonder did fate later on deal him a hand for his hubris. At the peak of his swagger he was scammed + thumped. Hillbilly dad also appeared in his subconscious to cut Don down to size. Also phenobarbitol? What kind of recreational drug is that? Was that what Betty was given when she recently birth / dreamed? I remember that drug as my Mum was put on it when  I was born I think. My mum used to say I got addicted to it + they had to wean me off it as an ickle  baby

As for Duck + Peggy....curiouser and curiouser. How is that going to play out you think?

Oooh i love it!!!

...Thats what I always liked about the Sopranos, from the same writer - the honest realistic depiction of how people actually behave. Contradictory, inconsistent, messy. If you think of a standard drama, the characters follow a convenient story arc ( Sorry may have spelled that wrong ). Mad Men doesn't, and wrongfoots us constantly.
Likewise with Peggy and Pete - that worked out in a slightly disappointing, underwhelming real life way.

Still, I love the ongoing complexity of Don. I wonder is that why he previously empathised with Sal? They both have so much in their respective closets...

Episode 8: Souvenir

Well! What a fascinating episode!

To anyone watching it for the first time it would have looked like a dull cross between 'Stepford Wives' and 'Desperate Housewives'!

However, it was suffused with all the usual, almost subliminal nuances.

The main angle it came from was to scene shift from the office to the 'burbs. You could foresee a snore-fest after the last episode. How wrong could you be!

To me it became a stark contrast between Don's waning moon and Betty's rising moon. And in the same way there was the echo of Pete's belief he could control matters out of the office as well as he feels he does in SC. Again, how wrong could he be?! He was given a real dressing down by the aupere's  boss, given no time to respond. He was afraid and ended up grateful... and ran back into the arms of Trudy.

Similarly, Don was put in his place. We see Betty realising she has muscles too. I think she is initially attracted to Henry for his power, and maybe his sexuality. But it wakens in her that she too has abilities. She starts to work feverishly in defence of the reservoir whilst at the same time understanding she can also use her sexuality. Remind you of anyone? Yep! Joan! How ironic!

Cut to Rome. Betty and Don in Rome. She speaks (and can flirt) in Italian! (I never saw that coming!). The Italian men rush to light her cigarettes. Betty mistranslates to Don what they are saying... I think it was like that. Either way, she realises she is powerful in her relationship. She then seduces Don in the hotel room... did you ever see Betty in sexy underwear like that?!

So back to the US. Nightmare scenarios playing out with Sally and Bobby! As soon as they arrive home the nanny hands baby Gene back to Betty and tries to explain to Betty about Sally's hideous behaviour. Betty calmly and lovingly takes the baby in her arms, barely listening to the news whilst Don runs away like a frightened animal! Bloody hell! He's clearly realised he's out of his depth with his wife already! The next morning, when she picks up her cig and reaches for her lighter... Don rushes to light it with his one, like the Italian men had done!

Niggle point: Bobby always has the same dirty T-shirt on.  But my good friend pointed out it could be because he feels so unloved and uses it as a security blanket. She's smart, my friend...

Oh boy! There is so much more to say as well, I know!
