Oliver Cromwell on dissolving Parliament in 1653:

'Ii is high time for me to put an end to you sitting in this place, which you have dishonoured by your contempt of all virtue, and defiled by your practice of every vice....is there a single virtue now remaining amongst you? Is there no vice you do not possess?...Gold is your God; which of you have not barter'd your conscience for bribes? Is there a man amongst you that has the least care for the good of the Commonwealth?'

I wonder if our Parliamentarians fit the bill today

As far as the the present day House of Commons goes, I think he was spot on!!!!

I have to say, it could pretty much apply to any govt! Power is an amazing thing....it can make even the most hardened socialist greedy....principles are one thing, but money and power anre something else altogether!

Not sure what the Iridh arguement has to do with owt! Think Kaytee was merely making the comparison, not saying that Cromwell is needed now!!!!!!!!!

Leaving aside the wrongs he did to the Irish, which isn't actually under discussion and is an entirely different issue, albeit an important one.....This speech could easily be made today with regard to our current crop of Parliamentarians.

Sorry.
It could and I'm sure it could have been used many times over the years. They have always been curupt and always will be.

Well you could say Cromwell had ideals to start with, then went berserk on power himself.

Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely

hmmmm... it does seem to. Do you think it would corrupt you KT?

I only ask, cos when I read that I think, I wouldn't be corrupted. But then thats probably either very naive or very arrogant of me!

Don't think is meant to be a discussion about the pluses and minuses of Cromwell....just that something he once said could be applied today!
