How did it fare - Finals week?

Over the summer, there was only one reality TV show everyone was talking about: Love Island.

Before consolidated viewing figures were accounted for, the total number of people who watched the series finale totalled 2.43 million, becoming ITV 2's most watched programme ever. Amber Davies and Kem Cetinay were crowned winners, taking home the Β£50,000 prize money.

However, whilst attention may have been firmly upon the island paradise, there was actually another reality show ongoing: Big Brother.

The series finale for the previously much-loved series reached an all-time low, averaging just over 900,000 viewers, down from the previous Friday. 600,000 more people watched last year’s finale and 400,000 more in 2015.

According to TellyMix, the 2017 series averaged a total of 250,000 viewers less than the previous year, standing at 900,000 across its 54 days. With catch-up TV added, that figure goes up to 1.2 million, still down from 2016’s 1.6 million. Turns out the nation just didn't care about Big Brother once Love Island got going.

Channel 5 currently has one more series tied into its contract with programme makers Endemol, not including the upcoming Celebrity Big Brother which, itself, has taken on a rather Love Island-esque look.

Sounds sad but it just needs a few tweeks

We need :

Real people, not wannabes with agents

Live feed

Diary Room conversations stay private

No mucking about with nominations

Three strikes and you're out - not 20 FINAL warnings and you're still in the house.

No outside information

Proper tasks, preferably 48 hour tasks

Basic food budget means you bake your own bread and live on chickpeas- NO alcohol or cigarettes!

Needs more than a few tweaks, Sainty.

When I loosely analyse Big Brother and the winners of that and CBB, it would seem that the general public's tastes have moved towards a certain type of person. That person as far as I can tell is not dissimilar to those on Love Island. For me, that is why there has been a shift towards that programme and the hint that CBB may be trying to "include" elements of LI in the upcoming CBB.

I think we all know what is lacking from BB and that is a return to basics, basic being not just the format but ordinary Joe's and Jo's.

Unfortunately C5 seem to be oblivious to negative tweets against the current format and worse still, the slow decline in viewers. I mean the signals are there, I'm just not sure what the execs are smoking Thinking !!!

Yes ...I think we only got lucky with the winners this year because they switched to vote to evict halfway through  ....if it had been Save then I'm guessing the results would have been pretty dire !!

I haven't seen the last two "regular" series now, and I reckon it would take most of these "tweaks" to make me watch again.

The thing is, I suspect BB have had a nasty shock from the recent success of "Love Island", and they're probably going to continue a competitive "race to the bottom". If anything, it's even less likely now that we'll ever see BB return to anything remotely like the show we once enjoyed.
