First of two client meetings at 16.00. the second at 19.30. Both clients coming here. The first one is notable as the most talkative of any of my clients, generally about nothing to do with tax. I will need to try to get him to concentrate on the things we need to go through otherwise he will still be here when the second client arrives. It's the latest the first client has ever got his papers to me. It's more than possible that there will be missing bits. As he has no internet or experience he will have to pay his tax by cheque. Because of recent changes by HMRC he won't be able to pay at the Post Office - he will have to send the cheque through the post to HMRC in time for the cheque to be cleared by 31 January, so I generally advice sending it no later than the 23rd.

I'll be ticking him off

Velvet & Summer, first client came on time and I was able to control him chatting on and he's just left. As I said there could be missing bits from what he gave me. And there was, the mortgage statement for the year to December 2016 on the property he lets - that's the biggest cost he can claim.

We’ve got lots of snow.

Minding went well but DiL forgot that we always get more snow than anywhere else in the area, so she didn’t put in the kids wellies as there was no snow lying at her house. No snowmen or snowball fights for the kids. Instead, they spent the afternoon sitting in a couple of large cardboard boxes, pretending they were in boats. My house is stuffed with toys and they prefer a couple of old boxes to play in.

I hope everyone is keeping warm and cosy in this cold weather.

The snow in the north was Storm Fionn, the strong winds dur tonight may get called Storm Georgina.

Squiggle, it's much the same here as where you are. Just been out to see the first client and I was glad to get back indoors as the wind is making it feel like zero.In terms of named storms so far there are more than last year but a similar number to the previous year. That doesn't take into account which part of the country was affected.

Summer, I suspect Yogi has enough snow to make rather a large snowman. As she says she's not intending to go out today.

Second client meeting done, one left today.

Just before the client arrived I had a phone call from a number which had rung me earlier but had been silent. Did a search and it was one of those who had rung people about their washing machines. This call was very different. Man with Indian accent claiming to be from what sounded like Nationwide Building Society. When I asked him to confrim where he was from the phone went dead. Clearly not from the real Nationwide. Almost certainly a criminal fraudster.

Yogi, I may get more of my fair share of scam calls as I work from home so can be targeted by scammers who are going for people and by those going for businesses. I hope you haven't had another lot of snow since you cleared the paths.

The Father Brown episode being repeated on Monday - "The Smallest of Things" is the one I've mentioned before. I thought it was the best episode of all the series made, absorbing and quite moving.

We have had more snow. A light dusting of snow - not the heavy snow predicted by the weather forecasters.

I think you’re right El, it’s like you are getting a double dose of scammers because you’re getting the business ones too.

The ones who were perstering me a few weeks ago - “Kevin”, “Daisy”, “Adam” etc from India - seem to have moved on to someone else.

I haven’t yet seen that episode of Father Brown but I’ve been recording this series

Good morning everyone, the wind has died down and it's a fairly bright cold morning.  Are the littlies enjoying the snow Yogi?  I know they are not with you at the moment but are they building snowmen/snowwomen?  I suppose we have to be gender inclusive! 

Sad to see in the papers this morning that they are talking about the death of the landline due to so many nuisance calls, what a state of affairs!

Squiggle, it's not the first time the end of the landline has been mentioned in papers but many businesses still use them and I would have thought that mobile phones geta similar number of nuisance calls as landlines. I assume you are referring to an article in the Mail today. Extract from the online version:

"Earlier this month, it emerged that Britons were bombarded with 2.2million nuisance phone calls and texts about PPI, pensions and insurance scams last year.

Nearly 900million of those calls and texts came from ambulance-chasing firms trying to get people to claim compensation for accidents, an analysis of Ofcom data found."

I think they meant to say 2.2 billion rather than 2.2 million.

By the way, the I has an article today about a shock on the way for thousands of top earners facing unexpected tax bills from their pension contributions. That's been known for ages by accountants as the government announced it in 2015 so anyone likely to be affected who has an accountant hopefully has already been warned. It only applies to people whose total income is over £150,000 so won't be relevant to the majority of people.
