I think it's sorted but I realised fairly soon after I got the new computer that there was a small C drive (64 Gb) and the large D drive (1 Tb). I also have the external drive (2 Tb) but that's not relevant. As we know with computers, the default drive for installing new programs is the C drive. Although one can override that you have to remember to do that which can be easily forgotten.
So I mentioned that to the people in the local computer shop where I bought it and they said that was easy to resolve, just by departitioning the drive. Their tech guy would pop round to my house and do it, it will only take a minute.
So he came this afternoon to do it. He soon realised that there were 2 drives in the computer, the small C drive and the large D drive. So departioning the drives was not an option. The C drive is a SSD drive which is ultra fast and is intended for the core Windows software and is not intended for general programs. That's why it's so fast to boot up when I turn the computer on.
So the tech guy tried to change my computer profile so that programs would automatically get installed on the D drive rather than the C drive. He couldn't get that to work. So in the end he created a new profile for me which would have the desired effect. We had to re-do things like destop icons, email access, contacts on email. He deleted the old profile setting my new profile as administrator.
So that one minute visit actually was a bit over an hour. (No mention was made of me being charged for that and I wouldn't have expected to be charged as they should have done this before I got the machine. To be fair, this was the first time they had dealt with this model.
after he left I checked that the accounts software I had installed yesterday was still working OK and found that it wasn't. I worked out for myself that I needed to grant administrator access to the program to be able to get it to work and it now does seem to work as it should.
It just goes to show that it was worth getting the computer from the local shop rather than from say PC World or via online as it would have taken far longer to get this sorted out. It also helps that I'm reasonably computer literate and that I got the computer at a relatively non busy time of year so this hasn't caused work problems.
