Better than my mallet

Thanks Summer......but I’m still keeping the mallet, just in case

Moonie

Good morning everyone

Back to being very cloudy here, less cold than recently, could be a drizzly day.

Yogi, I hope you were able to get a better night's sleep

I hope everyone has a good day

Good afternoon everyone

It’s a little breezy, cool but not cold and dry

Sweet, I slept modestly well, which is good for me, fankoo

Yogi, I hope you managed to sleep better last night, with Sweet’s help rather than Moonie’s mallet

Have a great day, all

A very old silent film from 1926 called "The Magician":

The director Rex Ingram and the lead actor Paul Wegener were well known at the time but are unknown now other than to film buffs.

Rex Ingram's assistant director on that film was only 20. The assistant director also appeared in that film in a tiny role. It's very short and is at 24 minutes 57 seconds in. He's the man on the left trying to find his hat. His hair was already receding at that age. It's unlikely that you would recognise him at that age but that's Michael Powell, the film director.

(the following year, 1927, was the first time Alfred Hitchcock appeared in one of his films - The Lodger)

El Loro

By the way Rex Ingram, the film director, was Irish. He didn't use his surname with films. By a strange coincidence, his surname was Hitchcock - he was making films quite a few years before Alfred Hitchcock started.

There was another Rex Ingram, the actor. The film which is most likely to have been seen by you is the 1940 "The Thief of Bagdad" where he played the Djinn. That film had a number of directors involved. It was started by Ludwig Berger in early 1939. The producer, Alexander Korda, was not impressed with what Berger was doing. So he brought in Michael Powell to effectively take over as director with some help from Tim Whelan. So the three credited directors are Berger, Powell and Whelan. The filming was brought to a halt by the outbreak of war. Korda eventually moved the production over to Hollywood to complete the filming. Michael Powell was unable to continue as he had been put on to a moral-boosting documentary "The Lion has Wings". So the last part of the filming was directed by William Cameron Menzies and Zoltan Korda. 5 directors in all but Michael Powell was the main director.

Evening all

Another rainy and windy day.

Thanks everyone. I slept for around 5 hours which, on recent form, is quite good for me.

Grocery shopping today and got my hair cut. *twirls*

I hope everyone has had a good day.

All okay thanks

Just stocking up on cup-a-soups, beans, masks (try finding them) and Hamzat suits.

Been following corona closely and the bottom line is no-one knows. So called experts all contradicting themselves. I've seen no hysteria in the media - only all they can go on. Trust Chinese figures at your peril. It's deffo everywhere by now and our Govt. response isn't even laughable. Self isolate the Health Secretary's advice was. How do you do that if you live with others? Britain is a joke and last one to get their citizens out. Think we're prepared? Those that could make it that is in a no go zone. As for mixed marriages...my heart goes out.

On that cheery note I'll attempt sleep in full diving gear with an aqualung. Hope all are well and take care

Good morning everyone

Cloudy here and some rain is forecast today.

Yogi, I'm glad you were able to get some sleep, I hope you did overnight

Velvet, I'm glad all is okay Re the corona virus, I think it's quite possible that anyone in this country aged 65 or more or any other person who has had the pneumococcal vaccine would have a degree of protection against the worst effects from pneumonia if they caught the virus.

I hope everyone has a good day

The Radio 4 programme "More or Less" on Fridays at 16.30 looks at the maths behind statistics and figures mentioned in the media. Today's episode includes an item about the Wuhan coronavirus. You might want to listen to it.

Each year HMRC lists various excuses people have used for not filing their tax returns. I have posted them before. This year they've listed their top bizarre excuses including some expenses claims from the last 10 years. Here's their video.

Evening all

Another wet and windy day.

Good to see you back, Velvet

Awful situation in China and sadly things are likely to get worse before they get better

lol at “My hamster ate the post”

Hope everyone has had a good day

Good morning everyone

Forecast here is a dry but breezy day.

My radio news did include the coronavirus referring to both Newcastle and to those who have been quarantined at the Wirral. They are trying to trace those who had close contact with the couple. The have said close contact is where someone has been within two metres (a bit over six feet) of them for at least 15 minutes.

I hope everyone has a good day

I've been doing some maths on the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in China. The numbers are increasing inevitably but the daily percentage rate of new cases confirmed show a small decrease for each of the last 4 days:
4 days ago 32.31%
3 days ago 29.08%
2 days ago 25.69%
yesterday 21.66%

so the first signs that they may be getting this under control.

There's a new series called "Secrets of the Museum" which starts on BBC Two on Thursday at 20.00 (so clashes with "Best Home Cook". It's a 6 part series looking at the work of people behind the scenes at the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Sounds delightful and as it reminds me a bit of BBC's The Repair Shop I think @squiggle in particular may like it.

Good morning everyone I think we may get some sunshine today. I wouldn't trust those figures from China EL. It's in their own interests to keep the statistics that they issue low. I don't think we are getting the truth, I could of course be wrong but the fact that they have built two new hospitals at lightning speed (and immense cost) is indicative of an extremely serious situation.

I will record The Secrets of the Museum, thanks for the recommendation.

Enjoy your day everyone

Good morning I hope you’re all having a good weekend I’m awake quite early for a Sunday

we’ve been short staffed as one of the team has a sickness bug! She’s already feeling a bit better though so she’ll soon be back to her normal self. It is worrying with the Corona virus being worldwide news.

Secrets of the museum sounds good! Thanks for the recommendation
