Squiggle, a law was passed in 1868 which changed the way that parsons were paid. The term parson could be what we think of as a vicar and also a curate.. The result of the change in law and the confusion that could arise because of parson meaning either lead to the term being dropped.

Trying to explain the history on how they were paid and the change would be complicated, it's to do with tithes and glebes. Nowadays clergy are paid centrally.

Thanks Velvet and squiggle

Velvet, I think Beth Tweddle had to have neck surgery after a serious spinal injury. With her and 3 others having to quit The Jump due to injuries there must be doubt if the programme will continue.

Olympic bronze medallist Beth Tweddle has taken her first unaided steps since having neck surgery following her fall on Channel 4's The Jump.

The retired British gymnast, 30, had fractured vertebrae fused together after she was injured while training for the winter sports TV programme.

Tweddle says doctors at the hospital in Austria are happy with her progress.

"I've started to feel a lot better in the past 24 hours and I've begun walking by myself," she said.

"It's still a case of taking one day at a time, but I'm setting myself goals and I'm determined to be up and about as soon as I can.

"Next week we will have a better idea of when I can be discharged from hospital."

Evening I'm really pleased to hear Beth Tweddle is doing well, but I feel it's such an awful thing what's happened to her. After such a sparkling career, it's rotten that she's been dealt such a horrible accident.

I read in the news today that Ben Cohen has flown out to Austria to take the place of yet another injured jump contestant.?

I loved The King & I it's a lovely movie.

Yesterday evening I watched a 1944 musical called Cover Girl. It starred Rita Hayworth and Gene Kelly and is rarely shown on television. It's a very early film in Kelly's career and was an indication of what was to come.

Here are a couple of pieces from the film. First what is called the alter ego dance sequence.

And Make Way for Tomorrow. That's Phil Silvers as well.

Got a letter from M&S about my M&S credit card and the points I get when using it. No change to the points when shopping in M&S. A reduction in when used elsewhere - one used to get 1 point for every ÂĢ2 spent, from next month 1 point for every ÂĢ5 spent - that's a 60% reduction.
It's due to the EU putting a cap on what are called interchange fees which is what is paid between the selling companies and the credit card company. The government expects businesses to adjust their prices so that customers don't los out.

Got something similar from Tesco with regards to the Tesco Credit Card.

Extremely Fluffy Fluffy Thing

In the last few days I've had a couple of calls from so called IT departments. They seem to be using a different tactic from the past as they are ralking about programs getting on to your computer without your knowledge. They insist that it's not a scam but I think it unlikely that it's not. As usual English christian names with Indian accents. I cut them off before they get very far.

The calls have been from apparently UK numbers which have been different. I wonder if they have realised that people can bar numbers so are now using a variety of numbers to get around this. A google search on the two numbers did not produce any results of scammer reports which supports my suspicion.

Squiggle, my google search on the two numbers did not have any results from whocallsme and similar sites. I didn't mention that with the first caller they wanted me to go in to the event viewer. That's standard procedure by the scammers but in terms of unauthorised programs, that's not the program to use to see what programs are running. You use either the task manager or possibly msconfig but not eventvwr.

I'm off to the dentist.

Quite a dramatic last hour and a half. On the way to the dentist I stopped at a set of traffic lights as they had turned red. Suddenly a car came from the other side of the road at an angle right in from of my car over the crossing and came to a grinding halt on the grass verge/pavement on my left. I should say that there was no-one on the crossing and that the car did not hit my car. A couple of passers by dashed accross the road to the car. The verge/pavement is wide and pedestrians would not be inconvenienced.

Normally I would have stayed but as I could not be of any assistance, there were a couple of passers by assisting, and I didn't know what had happened, I moved on because of my emergency appointment. I could see that the car behind me remained there with lights flashing.

As far as the dental visit was concerned I got the all clear. The extraction site is healing nicely and the dentist decided to remove the stitches as they were no longer needed. He could see that there were a nick on the gum above the molar where I had found bleeding but wasn't concerned. He have me a tube of Sensodyne repair toothpaste to smear over the gum if needed and to continue using the saline mouthwash for another few days. And to go back if there are problems.

I decided to go back the way that I came and saw that the car was still on the pavement. There was also a police car. So I parked round the corner and went to the police car. I explained what had happened and explained why I hadn't stayed. The police officer wasn't concerned. She said that the 92 year old driver had pressed the accelerator rather than the brake and rather than crash into the car in front swerved over the traffic lights crossing. I said it's just as well that no-one had been on the crossing. She said that the driver realised that he couldn't continue driving but was OK and had been taken home. She was waiting for a vehicle to come and collect the car.
