I remember him best in The Eiger Sanction playing alongside Clint Eastwood.

), but yeah: it's "Cool Hand Luke" for me too.
Primarily a Paul Newman film of course, but unimaginable without George Kennedy's (Oscar-winning) foil...

When i was a kid Cool Hand Luke was one of those movies regularly on TV; i must have watched it 3 or 4 times; and i doubt it ever finished this side of midnight!

No, he definitely did some b&w films: "Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte" and ""Lonely are the Brave" are perhaps among the better-known. His early career was largely in TV shows, though - a lot of them Westerns, perhaps unsurprisingly...
