I would agree with EL. There's no single clear pattern, so - assuming there's not a misprint - the two "3"s suggest two interweaved series:

1, 3, 3, 7, 9, 11, ?

The first series is 1, 3, 9, ? - this is 3 to the power of x, where x = 0 to 3, so "?" = 3 cubed = 27.

The second series is 3, 7, 11 - this is adding "4" each time, so the next number in the series after "?" would be 15.



There's still not that much info, IMO, to be certain that's what's going on, though. I'd want to see some of the other questions on the paper to confirm they're definitely doing interweaved series as part of the test.

I'm assuming the sequence is a series of 3-digit numbers: the first two digits increase by 1 and the third decreases by two.

(...or to put it another way, you've got a series of 3-digit numbers, and your adding "108" each time...)

Coming in a bit late here...

This is a really nice puzzle: for those who haven't seen it before, it's usually presented like this:

Did you ever read Edward De Bono? Fascinating guy, my favorite of his ideas was to solve the problem of slow elevators, rather than coming up with a solution to speed them up, he suggested putting mirrors in the lobby instead!
